Cardinals did Not fire Coryell, his contract expired and the Cardinals did not want to sign him to another one. In 1978 he was the Head Coach of the Chargers and started Air Coryell. From 1974-1982 he had a .500 or better record in every season including 5 playoff appearances (2 with Cardinals, 3 With Chargers).
@@Papawill13 Cornell was out of coaching through week 4 in 1978. After a week 4 loss in 1978 the Chargers fired Tommy Protho and hired Cornell. Incidentally that was the same day (September 25) as the infamous mid air collision of a commercial flight and a private plane over San Diego.
this is about the time I started getting into football... and yes this team was 7-3 at one point, seemingly headed for 4th straight playoff appearance,,, and that thanksgiving game did something, the franchise died that day lol, they never made the playoffs again (minus the 1982 strike year) in stlouis.... wonderful quality for a 40 year old game lol, thanks rich!
dougjennings I think they missed the playoffs in 76, but point taken, they were still a good team. Don't sleep on the Lomax Era Cards. They might have made the playoffs in 82 even without the strike, they were good again in 83, and as you surely know came within a missed field goal of winning a tough division in 84.
Gregg, Agreed.. My opinion, Cards were always a little better than their record reflected. 80s NFC East was treacherous. If Cards had been in West or Central, they probably would've won a couple extra games each season. May have had an easier annual road to playoffs.. Miss Lomax to Roy Green.
Good to see some old school St. Louis Cardinals football fans here. I was a Cards fan from 1984 - 2001 and I definitely know all about the few high and many lows of being a Cards fan during this time period. The "84" finale against the Redskins was a classic game but nonetheless a heartbreaker for us Cards fans. I vividly remember watching that game at my friend's house and being the only person in the house, if not the State of MD cheering for them. When O"Donahue missed that FG, that was my first time being depressed over a football game. Another game that any "Real/True" Cards fan should remember should be the 1987 season finale against the Cowgirls. Once again, all they had to do was beat an aging Dallas team and they were in as the last wildcard. I remember that last weekend of the 87 season like it was yesterday. I was cheering (probably the only time in my life) for the Redskins to beat the Vikings on Saturday. Once that happened, I was so excited for the Cards/Dallas game the next day, that I barely slept that night. Alas, the Cards broke my fourteen year old heart by losing that game 21 - 16. They were actually nearing the Dallas red zone with a minute to play but in typical Cards fashion they imploded. The "88" season (first in Phoenix) they started out 7 -4, then Lomax got hurt and they crumbled again. Even in 1989 they were decent but once J.T. Smith suffered a season ending injury in week 9 or 10, their offense suffered considerably. One of my favorite Cards season was the 1990 one. They upset the Eagles in week two at the Vet, should of beaten the eventual SB champs (NY Giants) at the Meadowlands (they blew a nine point lead with under five mins to go in the game), and failed to convert a fourth and inches against the Packers, in which they would of won. If they would of won those games and with a little luck they might of snuck in as the last wildcard that year. Anyways, I can talk about the Cardinals all day long but anyone who reads this blog should know that this is coming from an "Original" fan.
The Cardinals were definitely a talented team back in the eighties/early nineties but like you mentioned, the NFC East back then was killer. Another obstacle they had to face besides their opponents back then was that they probably had the NFL's worst owner (Bill Bidwell).
It's great watching these old games from the 70's! Brings back a lot of memories If you can find some of my beloved Vikings games from that era you would really make my day! Thanks for providing us old school fans with these awesome games. Please keep them coming. ( Viking games please!!!!!)
Jackie Smith's retirement was short-lived. He played for the Cowboys in the Super Bowl the following year, and is unfortunately best known for dropping a touchdown pass in the Cowbots' 35-31 loss to the Steelers.
Don Coryell wasn't unemployed very long, I still think he got a raw deal in St. Louis, fired after going 38-18-0 in his final 4 seasons as their HC only to be replaced by Bud Wilkinson. Coryell's 3-6 playoff record is keeping him out of the pro football HOF, but Air Coryell put Dan Fouts in the Hall.
That Buccaneers defense was no joke. Wish I could say the same for their offense. There was a game in the 1977 season, where the Buccaneers defense hammered the living daylights out of Walter Payton. I believe that was only a couple of weeks before this game. To beat up on Sweetness spoke volumes.
Payton was the only 100-yard rusher the Bucs D allowed all year. Unfortunately the offense was a disaster, getting shut out a still-standing NFL record six times. Even in their win over the Saints, the defense outscored the offense.
True. Back in the day, we really didn't think much of the unis. But, after awhile, you realize how cool they were. Like the Jets...I used to think their green helmet and unis were not so good, but over time, and looking at the older games, even their old unis look cool. Both the Bucs and Jets have good uniforms and helmets now, but it would be nice if they went with the retro look from time to time.
The Cards were on fire before that Thanksgiving game against the Dolphins, then everything went down the drain. Punctuated by this season ending mail-it in performance against the Bucs. 70’s Bucs and Oilers uniforms were my all time favorites. Wish I could find out who did that disco version of Bill Bailey Won’t you please come home that CBS used to lead into commercials with back in those days.
What on earth were the Cards thinking in the locker room after the game? They knew they were out of the playoffs, but losing clearly to a team 1-26 over two seasons? Dierdorf later said they knew Coryell was gone when he gave his usual end of season speech, a speech where he had always said see you next spring. This time he didn't say it.
It's odd seeing the field goal kickers using that old technique. (approaching the ball in a straight line and kicking with the front of the foot) This was before kickers started adopting the "soccer style" kicking (approaching the ball diagonally and kicking with the inside arch of the foot) that has become the standard amongst all kickers today that was introduced by former soccer players who joined the NFL as place kickers.
What was the reason for the Cards' four game collapse to end this season? Dissension among players or between players and coaches? Did the tense relationship between Coryell and the front office affect the players as a distraction? Did they have any more injuries that was normal or compared to other teams? Or could that downward spiral have simply been from the psychological shock of getting massacred by Mr. Peabody on Thanksgiving Day?
Such an ignominious defeat for the Cardinals. They folded their tents and didn't even try to win. Opened 1977 being shut out, and ended it the same way. Three weeks earlier, the Dolphins humiliated them on Thanksgiving in front of their home fans. At that point, they still had a chance for the playoffs, but they lost to the Redskins, and that was it. The end of the Big Red. So sad, if you were a fan. . .
Classic football. See how there isn't all the junk on the screen that you have these days. Notice how the fans aren't so close to the action. There is a sense of distance. Also, no fucking politics involved. Announcers who didn't showboat and try to give their damn opinion about everything. Just classic football.
The creamsicle uniforms are the best! I know they are universally scorned. By I think they are awesome!
They should go back to these uniforms!
I think they're great.
Interesting note here: When the Bucs won their 2nd game, the last two teams they beat, fired their coaches the following week.
