I did hear about the tsunami but couldn't figure out how the weather produced it. Since they did not mention that the wave was more than one, I thought it must have been a rogue wave. Thanks for the explanation that makes more sense.
Single 'rogue waves' are strictly an open ocean phenomenon and do not affect coastlines. There are extra large waves that can come in but they are part of an already occurring large swell that is hitting the coast.
No rogue wave buddy -- this is affecting the entire northern coast of Peru and even the northern coast of Ecuador and probably Colombia. I live here -- It is a large swell; the same that hit Hawaii last week.

There was no other areas affected and the size of the waves seemed to be out of proportion to weather generated waves of Peru in the past. Glad that you have a much more logical source for this event.

I had seen news about the waves yesterday but they were saying they might have come from the same source as the waves in California, which really didn't sound right. An underwater landslide makes much more sense.
1:04 indeed, local news saying the same but international news called it a tsunami. Since the Tonga eruption, my personal trust for Peruvian Navy (Marina de Guerra del Peru) is very low regarding accurate information. Maybe additional to the high tide and strong winds, the landslide could cause those waves, many northern fishermen said they've never seen such waves before and these are stronger and higher they've seen in their working experience
Yeah it was widely reported as that as far as I can tell it comes back to a statement made by the Peruvian navy. It isn't surprising that a navy person might when contacted by concerned folks suggest it could be due to wind but they are not geologists and probably hadn't seen the seismic records to look for the low level rumbling associated with ongoing landslides.
Thanks for posting this - very interesting- heart goes out to all the fishermen who have lost their boats and source of income 🙏 I personally old really enjoy hearing you talk about the Grand Banks tsunami that you mentioned at the end of this video

I had watched the vids that were posted on this late on the 27th, and yesterday, Dec. 28th. "They" said that it was merely abnormally-large waves from La Nina, I believe. Thank you for clarifying this. The waves certainly LOOKED like tsunami waves, but what do I know? Thanks again, Happy New Year, and Cheers!
Appreciate the clarification. At the same time massive waves were affecting Hawaii and the California coasts. I suspected that perhaps the same intense storm systems that generated these waves caused them to travel all the way south of the equator and affect Ecuador and Peru. Of course, now that I think more about it, that doesn't make sense, else we'd seen these types of waves all along the western coasts of Central America. The other thought that there were other intense storm systems south of the equator that generated these waves. Are you the first to propose these are actually tsunami related? Or have other geologists come to that conclusion as well? Great work, as always . . .
Great analysis! The initial reason we heard was a storm swell. But since there hadn't been any mention of a storm just 2 days prior I looked at the ocean wave data and there clearly wasn't anything with enough power to generate what was being shown on the early TH-cam videos.
I have been watching you for years now, and I am still amazed at your technical acumen and your geology knowledge. Why have major networks not reached out to you to be a specialist for their news, or for universities and scholastic Institute?
Locals are saying these are not tsunami waves. The southern hemisphere has been active year round. Southern hemi crossed with a big north probably caused this.
Underwater landslides are silent killers, unpredictable and extremely dangerous. When I saw the waves hitting Peru's coastline >I automatically discarded weather as the source of this event, as there was no earthquake registered in the area at that time, the only logical choice wasa local underwater landslide. Thank you for confirming this, great analysis as usual.
It is an interesting theory, but the timing of the wave event and the look of the waves in the videos I see would appear to be large storm surf waves, not tsunami. The west coast of the U.S. had just been hit with massive waves and timing of this is consistent with that same swell hitting Peru later in the week. The waves seem to be breaking in a manner consistent with normal storm surf, not breaking and then running up and over the land like a tsunami. Some of the aftermath damage video appears that it is possible there had been the kind of inland run up constant with a tsunami but I definitely need more information before being convinced of your theory.
nice theory but how can you explain then that right now as I write this, waves are still four meters tall here in Piura, Perú, all the coast is closed right now, how can a landslide generate waves like that over the spawn of three days by now
That wave shown in the intro is almost certainly at Teahupo on Tahiti. I've been there and seen that wave from that view point with my own eyes and it's terrifying. I'd never even think of surfing it like some do.
Last night I was seeing the same "live coverage of 'tsunami'" videos in my feed over and over. I tried googling to see what happened and couldn't find anything... I was thinking maybe it was false reporting, recycling footage from a previous earthquake. But here we are, at least an attempt at an explanation. Thanks!
What interests me as well is how they can track the waves back to a central point, an origin. Hence something happened to generate this. But no one has any records of anything (earthquake, volcano, landslide, submarine landslide, even strange turbidity currents) at least in a way that triggered any warnings. Post issue they are looking into records and they see something in the records. But no one worried. So the question is why no warnings .. OR .. why was this event unusual to trigger the wave while normally no warnings are needed.
Thank you for this. I couldnt understand a weather generated tsnami, as reported. Surely a contradiction. I think I have heard of these slides also being called slumps in the past. 🇬🇧
I enjoy watching your channel. I have learned a great deal of information that I have been able to share with my youngest son. Who is really into geology and has an interest in becoming a volcanologist one day.
It might be that, but the Navigation and hydrographic services from Peruvian Navy says the phenomenon originated in the northern pacific, with strong winds pushing waves south and it's supposed to go on till January 1st. There were a similar surge last week or during Christmas somewhere off the coast of California, I don't remember the name of the town, but they shut down a pier and boats were tossed up and down by the waves. Maybe if it was a landslide it was further up North?
@Jac_light it turns out there was a 7.2 earthquake off the coast of Peru and from what I read the waves in California were caused by a big storm at sea. But I could be wrong and happy New Year
When you are actually knowledgeable in a subject and read a journalistic story that is adjacent to that subject it becomes glaringly apparent that most journalists either don't or aren't able to take the time to understand the details of the underlying mechanics of the thing they're reporting on. It becomes truly unsettling when you realize it's likely the same across all subjects and you're just not familiar enough with them (no one knows everything, after all) to see it as clearly as when they get it all wrong in your own subject of expertise.
People ae only beginning to realize that, with the demise of the newspaper, we cannot rely on TV for news. This event and the devastation in North Carolina being good examples.
There was a tsunami that hit the coast of what is now Pakistan and western India in November 1945. It occurred several hours after an earthquake and is suspected of having been caused by an underwater landslide that was in turn caused by the earthquake but with some delay. I would be interested to find out more about this occurrence if any information is available, since I am sometimes working in the area that was affected and know lots of good people living there.
this didnt look like a tsunami to me at all, its a large swell or somthing dont listen to this guy, a large earthquake would have to accur to cause a big enough underwater landslide to displace alot of water and cause a tsunami. If there was a tsunami that was 15-20 ft high (the height of the waves in peru), it would be much more catastrophic. Tsunamis are not large breaking waves with a bit of damaging current following them, but large walls of water with waves lengths potentially a hundred miles long when out in the ocean. when a tsunami nears the shore the tsunami will slow down and gain height, and all the water behind it will push it on shore, and it will keep plowing inland for miles, if the land elevation doesnt stop it. Tsunamis travel at incredible speed, and somtimes they even manifest as what looks like a rapidly rising sea level, or current apposed to an approaching wall of water. I dont think this is a tsunami theres know way
Our recent waves have been linked to weather for the most part. As far as I know, there were no seismic events/slumps in the region. The extent of these waves also ran from SoCal all the way to Washington and beyond, the extent of the storm fronts.
I’m amazed by the lack of news coverage! Thank you for covering this!

Interesting,I had never heard of turbidity currents, or their damage potential.
Thank you for this. I couldnt understand a weather generated tsnami, as reported. Surely a contradiction. I think I have heard of these slides also being called slumps in the past. 🇬🇧
Clearly explained.
What's your thoughts on the likelihood of the Storegga Slides recurring? I live in NE Scotland, just 50 metres from the sea.
The reporting that it was weather-related wohld jndicate that even though sensors picked up the landslide there was no warning? That's extra scary.
Likely due to how close to the shoreline the landslide originated; waves began hitting the coast before the nearest tsunami buoy picked it up.
I have a question. Did this have any effect on the waves that were hitting the coast of California?
I was thinking the same about the waves that hit Santa Cruz marina
@Jac_light it turns out there was a 7.2 earthquake off the coast of Peru and from what I read the waves in California were caused by a big storm at sea. But I could be wrong and happy New Year
Lordy. It seems to be a Christmas thing
Is this like what happens off Hawai'i?
Could you do a video for more detail of the 1929 Tsunami that hit Atlantic Canada?
When you are actually knowledgeable in a subject and read a journalistic story that is adjacent to that subject it becomes glaringly apparent that most journalists either don't or aren't able to take the time to understand the details of the underlying mechanics of the thing they're reporting on. It becomes truly unsettling when you realize it's likely the same across all subjects and you're just not familiar enough with them (no one knows everything, after all) to see it as clearly as when they get it all wrong in your own subject of expertise.
Why isn't mainstream media reporting this?
People ae only beginning to realize that, with the demise of the newspaper, we cannot rely on TV for news. This event and the devastation in North Carolina being good examples.
There was a tsunami that hit the coast of what is now Pakistan and western India in November 1945. It occurred several hours after an earthquake and is suspected of having been caused by an underwater landslide that was in turn caused by the earthquake but with some delay. I would be interested to find out more about this occurrence if any information is available, since I am sometimes working in the area that was affected and know lots of good people living there.
This is the likely mechanism for a tsunami in Eastern Australia.
this didnt look like a tsunami to me at all, its a large swell or somthing dont listen to this guy, a large earthquake would have to accur to cause a big enough underwater landslide to displace alot of water and cause a tsunami. I dont think this is a tsunami theres know way
What about the "rogue waves" in California? Wouldn't that be also linked to this? It also happened on Ecuador and northern Chile.
Our recent waves have been linked to weather for the most part. As far as I know, there were no seismic events/slumps in the region. The extent of these waves also ran from SoCal all the way to Washington and beyond, the extent of the storm fronts.
