I loved the integration of footage of live great whites in this sequence, especially at the moment of the attack. It was really beautifully done, as good as it could have been.

The shark hit the boat a few times, it takes on water, Gardner is eaten, except for his head, and the rest is history. The actual Ben Gardner in the movie is a true fisherman in the amity "area" and his real life persona is who Quint was based upon. Interesting.

My grandad had a 70 evinrude just like that on a fiverglas 15ft bassmaster. It would do about 35, trimmed all the way out. She has it set to a high trim for top end, not hole shot. So shes probably getting about 30mph, maybe 32.
Boats don't go as fast as one would imagine out on the water. It's not the same as say a land vehicle. The water creates more drag on a boat which has ONE single propeller trying to push it. Great whites along with countless other marine creatures are built to be able to cut through water at alarmingly fast speeds. Dolphins, orcas they can easily outrun a power boat. And a great white is no exception.
The first unnecessary sequel to the first summer blockbuster looks like Citizen Kane compared to a lot of the trash put out today. Loved Jaws 2 the most as a kid, but has since been rightfully bumped to 2nd place behind the 1st. Shark scenes are all pretty good. Eddie and Marge's deaths, as well as the helicopter attack are all standouts, though lacking in gore. Spielberg truly was the master at pushing the PG rating to its limit; just look at Poltergeist. The original Jaws had no problem showing its audience the gruesome remains of the shark's victims, a leg getting severed, lots of blood, and shots of the animatronic shark ACTUALLY biting people. Jaws 2 has a higher body count, but the deaths were generally less shocking, save for the shark's death. 😅
When I saw Jaws 1 and 2, I thought to myself that the movies were showing me what sharks do. Whenever sharks were shown for dramatic effect in movies or tv, you always saw the dorsal fin poking out of the water. I can see why people started irrationally fearing sharks after these movies.

Takes about two seconds, after seeing the shark to realize: 1: terri is dead 2. Now the shark is attacking me 3. Fire the motor and head for the beach, before i sink and am eaten And this, children, is why we always keep supersonic round pistols (.357, .44, etc) or 12 gauge pump shotguns with slugs in the boat. A 12 gauge at that range would have done serious damage to the shark, 2 or 3 rounds would have been fatal. Even a .357 which can shoot thru an engine block, 6 rounds would kill that shark. Maybe not immediately, but hed not survive 6 .357 rounds up close. Fuck a flare gun. May as well have a pellet rifle.
A thought that jaws 2 wasn't that bad a film but jaws 3&4 were quite poor number 4: the revenge being the worst. A quite enjoyed the bit where mike gets chased by the shark in the shipwreck scene. The banana boat scene aswel but that's it. Overall star ratings jaws 4&1/2 out of 5 stars, jaws 2: 2&1/2 out of 5, jaws 3: 1&1/2 out of 5 and jaws 4: the revenge 1 out of 5 stars but the first 1 is a classic!

They had three things going for them 1) Roy Schieder. 2) The shark worked good not like the floating in 4 or the 3D mess and imo- it's the scariest shark. That horribly burned makes it look all the more horrifying. And 3) It was made in the same spirit as the original. An ordinary town and it's hero literally find themselves face to face with a monster.
