There was a similar scene in the first Jaws film when Brody was at the dinner table looking despondent because he knew there was shark out but nobody believed him. And Sean notices his sadness and was there to cheer him by mimicking his actions, causing him to temporarily snap out of is depression.

This is such a heartbreaking scene. It's never really stated, but the guilt Brody feels for Alex Kintner's death in the first movie clearly still weighed on him. That loneliness he felt when only his youngest son helped him pick up the empty shells while everyone else either looked at him funny or deserted him just adds to it all. Jaws 2 is so much better than it had any right to be, and 99% of it had to do with how Brody was written, and the late Roy Schneider acting his ass off.
Jaws 2 is better than it has a right to be? Whatever that means. This movie is complete and utter garbage. It’s fun if and only if one can somehow forget the fact that it’s a sequel to one of the best films in history. It’s a slasher movie with a shark instead of a masked killer. 🤣

It was to show Brody slowly losing his mind (even though there really was a shark) after that encounter with the shark in the first film. The neglectfulness and ignorance of the whole town committee kind of triggered that motion of Brodys sanity (which i think is why he was killed off between Jaws 3-D and The Revenge because of the "fear").

I bet that was exactly what was going through his mind when he started ringing the bell. Brody literally states his motivation for his actions during the scene with the town council. "That's a shark. And you better do something about this one, because I don't intend on going through that hell again." While immedeatly starting to fire his gun may have been a bit excessive, I can definetly understand where he's coming from. You would also think the people of Amity would be more understanding given what Martin's seen and done.
It's sad how under played the role of that kids death in the first movie affected Broady. The slap from the grandmother and the harsh consequences of a lack of activity and delusion of the mayor in closing the beach. Broady paid for mistakes he didn't even commit

I remember watching Jaws 2 in the theater when I was only 15 years old. Chief Brody couldn't tell if that was a shark. Waving his gun and firing it in front of all those people was scary, but he was trying to protect everyone. He just got anxious. Poor Brody. That cost him his job also.

I was on this movie. The shark broke down so the bluefish scene was made up. We filmed in the summer but because of issues we had to go back in the winter and reshoot the scene. It was freezing. But even though I knew it was fake my reaction was real. I was scared making it. Don’t know how kids make those scary movies. I’m the girl in the yellow shirt and my mom in the purple suit. I also did the flips at the first beach scene.

Can really tell this was shot in a different location than the first one. The water is so clear he can stand on a tower looking for a shape but in the first one the North Atlantic water was so murky you couldn’t see the shark till it popped it’s fin or head out of the water.

It was probably just a shadow in the water, or maybe a school of fish, but you can't blame him for his reaction, especially after what he had experienced in the first movie. After all, it was his duty as chief of police to assure the people's safety, and already a grieving mother had blamed him for her child's death in Jaws 1.

I love how his son comes in to help. This movie isn’t as great or monumental as the first but it’s still a good movie imo mostly because of Roy Scheider.
You'd think that after the events of the first film, the people of Amity would be more skittish about the possibility of a shark attack!

I honestly think a movie about Brody dealing with PTSD could have been a movie in of itself.
Of course, that would have been too big of a risk for a sequel to what was one of the most successful films of all time.

I’m not a big fan of Jaws 2 but I think it’s a touching moment at the end of the scene when Brodys son helps him pick up the empty shells in the sand ❤

Can really tell this was shot in a different location than the first one. The water is so clear he can stand on a tower looking for a shape but in the first one the North Atlantic water was so murky you couldn’t see the shark till it popped it’s fin or head out of the water.

It was probably just a shadow in the water, or maybe a school of fish, but you can't blame him for his reaction, especially after what he had experienced in the first movie. After all, it was his duty as chief of police to assure the people's safety, and already a grieving mother had blamed him for her child's death in Jaws 1.

Everyone on the island forgot the first movie apart from him! He watched people be ripped apart and battled a massive man eater to the death yet he gets no sympathy for being cautious!
