    Matt definitely sounds different than Avi, but I love both of their voices so much! They both add so much to who Pentatonix is. And when you get a chance to see Matt in the live videos, you’ll see how perfect a fit he is. Check out The Grinch if you want to see an amazing Matt performance.

    Talent is talent. Just because someone is different from another does take away or make them less. Avi is awesome. Matt is awesome. Scott, Kevin, Kirstin and Mitch are awesome.

    The way that Mitch enunciate his words when he sings is very impressive.

      I saw them the night before in Saratoga. So much fun and the crowd had great energy. Going to see them on their Christmas tour too!

    You should listen to amazing grace to appreciate Matt's contribution. He is not Avi, and doesn't try to be. He just takes ptx in a different direction with their arrangements.
    I may be wrong, but I believe he sings more than Avi did. I loved Avi, but I love Matt just as much.

      Avi had more solo songs, Matt has more leads in songs (like this one, where they all take a part).

      Saw them in person last night…Matt was very impressive! He plays drums very well, and is much more flexible than Avi was. Lots of singing and even took leading roles and went super low on a few songs.

    Yes, that's Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable) on the far left. Matt joined in late 2017 or early 2018 (depending on how you figure it), after Avi left in 2017. In addition to being the newest member of Pentatonix Matt is also the youngest member, and bass voices improve with age. "Sound of Silence" was recorded four years ago and doesn't give an accurate idea of Matt's current range. For that I recommend listening to a recent live feed of "Hallelujah," where Matt's arrangement on the second verse appears to have been designed to show off his full range: th-cam.com/video/ASYzLoi810k/w-d-xo.html Matt doesn't seem to be down to basso profundo levels yet - I expect that to take another year or two - but on the high end he can reach very close to the top of a normal tenor range.
    Avi tended to be rather spectacular; Matt is more subtle. In some ways this makes Matt a better member of Pentatonix, which is a true ensemble band. It didn't matter who was soloing, the moment Avi started the bass harmonies all attention would focus on him, and that isn't what underlying harmonies are supposed to do. But with Matt, people sometimes don't even realize they're hearing him. They'll say things like "That can't just be beatboxing; they're doing something electronic to it to somehow beef it up," when the truth is that the reason the beatboxing sounds so full is Matt's bass line. They obviously HEAR the bass line, they just don't recognize it as separate from what Kevin is doing. Think of the amount of skill that requires from Matt, to work that closely with Kevin. It isn't spectacular, but it makes Pentatonix more spectacular.
    Matt's voice reminds me of snuggling under a soft blanket with a purring cat and some really good chocolate, and that's something that Avi's voice never did for me.

      Love this explanation! Matt’s versatility is great for this group but he especially stands out live. He has the best stage presence and is a showman for sure! He also has a great personality. You just feel like he makes friends easily lol

    PTX has a big 4, Hallelujah, Sound of Silence, Daft Punk and Bohemian Rhapsody. My favorites besides those are Shallow++, The Prayer++ and Havana+ that are not Christmas songs. They will take traditional Christmas songs and turn them on their heads into incredible new versions.

  • @evanirvana500
    @evanirvana500 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    My favorite, and let's be real everyone has a favorite even if they say they don't because they feel it means you're saying the other 4 are bad. You aren't, its just one person gets you more than others. It's ok, it's natural. Mine is mitch. Always, forever, for eternity. Lol second is Scott. Mitch has the biggest range than anyone and best singer. Even the other members say so. Lol that said I think Scott most flexible. The next most flexible is matt. No he doesn't go as low as avi. But he's got greater range than avi as he can sing bass and up to tenor. I also think matt isn't given enuf credit for having come in and having such big shoes to fill, and he's done so. He's also been longer on ptx than 8 believe avi was before he left, correct me if I'm wrong, fellow pentaholics. Or at least he's close to it. But he's got awesome range from bass to baritone to tenor. Avi couldn't do that. I miss avi too, but matt is great. Give him a chance and try to view him as his own person, not an avi replacement. Bc he's been with ptx long enough he's a full member now deserving of his own identity.

      Yea, well said. I absolutely don't think that Matt is a bad singer at all. Just solely from what I've seen so far (which is very little, only 4 videos and 3 of those with Avi), I preferred Avi as a bass.

    • @evanirvana500
      @evanirvana500 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @luciev_1 well pretty sure he's not coming back. So matt is the bass now and has been for years. He has the lead in the grinch, and I think also shines on bass on ",my heart with you", also "prayers for this world". I actually don't think ptx uses matt to his full range and potential, but then they didn't with avi either as he got a few solos but not many. But matt csn do more than he's been given so far. Kevin can sing too but he's only sung in a few bc his voice not as powerful and i think he's not as confident singing as he is beat boxing. Where he's the master. Oh and "amazing grace"! That's gorgeous and matt has a solo spot, and watch to the end and get a surprise.

      Let's see. Avi joined in the spring of 2011. (Source: Avi and Kevin first met the trio in person the day before they auditioned for _The Sing-Off,_ and Mitch had to miss his high school graduation ceremony to attend the audition. And high school graduation ceremonies normally happen in the spring.) Avi left mid-2017; I'm not sure of the exact date but it has to have been after they recorded the video for "Hallelujah," which was a hot day in August. So he was with them for about six and a quarter years. Matt joined in late 2017, after they'd had time to release two songs without Avi. Say late October or early November. It is now the end of August, 2023. Counting on my fingers, Matt must be coming up on his six year anniversary. So no, Matt hasn't been with Pentatonix longer than Avi, but he'll pass that mark early next year.
      Avi could sing tenor, but he'd only get up to about the middle of a normal tenor range. Matt can sing as high as Scott, or close to it. There's a video of Scott, Mitch, and Matt just messing around, all singing high tenor, and suddenly Matt does this perfect drop to low bass. Startles the heck out of the other two, and then they all crack up.

    Once you have seen a few more of the Pentatonix videos, I would recommend you check out “Recording of Evergreen”. It is a Behind the scene video of the second of the two weeks it took them to record the Christmas album “Evergreen“. It really gives you an idea of what goes into how they develop their sound.

    Matt and Avi are both great in their own ways. I think Matt blends better with everyone else than Avi did.
    Pentatonix would not have won The Sing Off with out Avi.
    Avi would probably not have been as successful with his solo career if he had not been with Pentatonix. Pentatonix gave him exposure.
    Both Avi and PTX are both successful and probably happier with the way things are now.

    You can't go wrong listening to anything Pentatonix has recorded, but all pentaholics have our personal favorites that we like to recommend. Here are some of mine:
    • "Imagine" (the official video, and be sure to listen all the way to the end)
    • "Run To You" (an original, written by Avi and Kevin)
    • "The Prayer"
    • "Bohemian Rhapsody" (the official video)
    • "O Come All Ye Faithful"
    • "Seasons Of Love" (preferably the live Fourth of July performance)
    • "The Kevin Show/Kevin's Fifth" ( th-cam.com/video/DbCasvcNx78/w-d-xo.html )
    • "Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy" (their second Grammy winner)
    • "Jolene" (a collaboration with Dolly Parton, their third Grammy winner)

      Personal choice of course - but Paul Simon's original solo version, with just his voice and guitar, is - to me - by far the best. (1965). Simple; honest; beautifully played and sung. And most importantly - not overproduced, unlike all subsequent versions.

    Oh and fyi avi picked matt for the group, or at least helped pick him. He didn't just leave then in the lurch. He helped find the new bass. So matt has avi's stamp of approval since he picked him!

      @@perfectkismet , yup. They ran a competition for the new bass and Matt won. He'd also memorized all the bass lines for all the past songs when he came to work with the group. He fit right in and is a perfect addition to the group.
