    I have been a professional car detailer in the past. I worked on import cars. BMW, Mercedes, Lotus, Ferrari etc. I know how to use a high speed buffer. Most scratches are actually in the clear coat. That is why the high speed buffer can heat up the clear coat and the scratches are gone. When the scratch is deep and to the paint then you can't remove the scratch. With the ceramic coating that is just an extra layer of protection. ceramic coating might be thicker but it is like using a high quality wax.

      Rep for a coating company here, from our side it is great to see videos like these as well. The better informed the customer is, the better they can weigh the choices for their car. Especially because of the cost of labour to get a coating done professionally.
      There are so many myths about, and some of the claims that we see are pretty insane. i.e. the fire proofing, the heavy acid resistance. Why sell people on a lie, instead of just a good product?

    If the coating was a hard-baked layer of ceramic similar to powdercoating, then sure, I'd believe the myths. But clearly it's not. Another question; if the ceramic coating is 'harder' than the clearcoat, will repeated application actually damage the clearcoat?

      @@joshyoung1440 Ceramic needs to be baked though? You can't just let it harden in the air.. similar to porcelain, or the ceramic coatings on exhausts for example. Unless you bake it, it's no stronger than dry mud. That led me to assume that the stuff mentioned here has baked ceramic particles in it, and only the binding agent needs to harden after application.

    • @MrValentine101
      @MrValentine101 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joshyoung1440 The materials get quite hard once they dry, the way that I usually put it is that you are creating a solid mineral layer over the surface of your car. Most nowadays are 9H, but there are some that go up to 10H. My recommendation though is to always check with the 10H claim, because some are legit (and they will usually have documentation to back it up), and others have used it in the past as a scam to sell inferior products.

    • @MrValentine101
      @MrValentine101 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Renzsu You are correct here. Professional grade ceramic coatings do need to be baked to get the full effect. Usually it's done under specialist UV lamps, and the room needs to be kept pretty sterile to avoid dust and other material from contaminating it.
      The type that AL used is a DIY kit, which is still pretty good. But they often do not harden quite as well due to a lack of baking. The usual curing period is at least 24 hours to get the basic hardening, but for the reaction to complete it takes about 2 weeks.

    Does the ceramic coating works on any surfaces? If it does, then applying it to things that you don't want dirty would greatly help. Example, if applied to a kitchen knife, the cleaning would be easy and food might not stick to the knife as much. It might also makes for a great killer weapon since the blood would fly off with a single swing in the air like in the movies.

    I have read a few comments about what some people are saying that no ceramic is present in a ceramic coating. "Ceramic" is a general term for anything inorganic..like sand or the lenses of your glasses, which aren't glass, by the way. They can rightfully be called ceramic coatings. Most coatings contain silicon dioxide. Others contain silicon carbide which is much more durable than silicon dioxide. There is no petroleum or silicon present. They are legitimate sacrificial layers that make your paint easier to clean and stop oxidation.

In my book it's written that the meniscus adjusts it's radius of curvature. But what if we use a liquid at its critical temperature or we can use really pure water so that the surface tension is zero and no meniscus is formed in the capillarity . Then the radius of curvature is already maximum. Then what if we cut the capillarity tube from below the height the liquid originally rose. Will it overflow. In my book it's written that it will never overflow but it has not discussed a condition when surface tension is zero.

    There are no advantages of these so called "ceramic coatings" compared to regular wax or silicone oil coatings. Also think about it some more: Ceramics are usually polar or even ionic compounds made out of metal cations and some sort of non-metal anions (most common: Oxide, Nitride) - why should such a compound be hydrophobic in the first place if it really was a ceramic? I call snakeoil, especially when it comes to the naming and actual ingredients of these coatings.

    Some say, if you put ceramic coating on your grandma, she'll get 20 years younger and will ditch Alzheimer

    Those ceramic coating are only meant to go over your painted surfaces, not glass.

    They're confusing the self-healing thing for a type of protective film you can get. Engineering Explained had this put on one of his cars years ago and demonstrated it.

    Do you have more data on the chemical structure of the coating?

    • @AvalonKing
      @AvalonKing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Weston! Are you looking for anything specific? The SiO2 is at 84% and TiO2 is at 2% I believe.
