    Thank-you for this beautiful video! It's so great to hear your perspective because this is also something that I've thought through and wrestled with. I think there's a third way to respond to compliment which is downplaying what the person has said and disagreeing with them "Well, actually I made so many mistakes!" or "Oh no, I'm definitely not the best!" - this can make the person feel like their compliment wasn't appreciated or that you have low confidence, and it's not helpful to your own growth as a musician either. I guess it's all about finding the balance! You've inspired me; maybe I'll make a video about my own take on this topic. Thanks for the discussion! :)

    Hey this was actually so so helpful not just in music but like in life in general... I really try to embrace being humble and end up not knowing what to do with complements of any sort. I liked what you said about finding the balance between internalizing the complement and using it to help you but also understanding your place in the world. Thanks!!!

    Right now, I'm learning the Paganini Caprice 24, Sarasate's Zapateado, Mozart's Violin A Major Concerto, Mozart's Rondo in G Major. (I don't post videos of me playing because I'm not good yet!) I feel as if these pieces are the roots of my technique. Even if I learn them completely in time, I will continue to practice them. I still have so much to learn!
    I love the video, ThatViolaKid! It inspires me to tell myself that I'm never going to be done with the violin! I'm glad you made this video! :)

    The first and last thing is to have a love /passion for the music you play. Some young musicians with talent tend to tackle difficult pieces first and show-off a lot of techniques and nailing every note. When it comes to playing a slow movement, they can't really show expression.
    The past few decades there are a lot of music uploaded online. Even young musicians are posting their performances online. It's hard not to be humble when you have to compare your music to dozens of video recordings of the same pieces. Once in a while you may get a nice complement from a professional. Unless you are really good, you don't get noticed much these days. I've come across some who took lessons for years but can't perform anything in front of family members. Really feel sorry for these people...

    What are your thoughts on baroque style and more than 4 strings violas?

    • @ThatViolaKid
      @ThatViolaKid  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think there's anything wrong with them! If they were acoustically better, we'd all be playing with them! If you wanna play them, go for it!

  • @klimentmilanov

    Hey I have a pretty big question: If I choose to be a musician, does that mean that I can't do anything else? Can I possibly get a masters in Juilliard and maybe major in college?

    • @ThatViolaKid
      @ThatViolaKid  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure what you mean by major in college. I know people who did the Juilliard-Columbia exchange where they took classes at Columbia to get a degree and then took lessons at Juilliard. If you really want to be a musician, I would suggest you go all in though. You will be competing with people who do this from the moment they wake up to the last moment before they go to sleep!

    • @klimentmilanov
      @klimentmilanov 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it's just I feel like if I devote myself to music, the highest education I'll have is high school, which makes me feel pretty ignorant if I never went to take some classes in an actual college

    • @ThatViolaKid
      @ThatViolaKid  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** If you devote yourself to music, you can go all the way to a doctorate level. Are you insinuating that musicians are dumb lol? If you really want to learn more, you can read books on subjects you're interested. I read books on photography, finance, astrophysics, and music history to keep my mind sharp. A school that gives you a piece of paper doesn't make you any less ignorant. It's the knowledge that you acquire that keeps you from ignorance--and a classroom isn't the only place to obtain knowledge.

    • @klimentmilanov
      @klimentmilanov 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I mean college classes are definitely more practical than simply books but sorry I didn't mean to go towards saying that musicians are dumb lol. Then again, when you comprise your whole entire life off of music, there doesn't seem to be much room for other subjects, contrary to majoring in a subject in college, where you affiliate most of your life to academics. I just wish there was some way I could do both :(

    • @ThatViolaKid
      @ThatViolaKid  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** You just gotta figure out what you want to do. I'm not the typical Classical Musician. I get out. I read. I make sure I have fun too. :) I make learning other subjects a priority, and I think when you get to my age, you'll be happy to do the learning outside of a classroom. No homework...no tests...no papers =)
