    I love this tune Doug;
    I have been playing guitar for 67 years, lap steel for 4 years - started with your courses (have all 3)
    Every once in a while a tune really reaches out and grabes me. This one is the latest.
    Thanks ever so much for fine song books with Tab and Sound tracks, and for your terrific youtube videos.
    You are one of the guys who make life for me at the age at 83 years of age still fun.

    Wow! Doug Beaumier has got to be one of THE greatest lap steeler's ever. I am 88 yrs old and started with Bashful Oswald playing "Dobro" behind Roy Acuff in the early '40's: right on up to Jerry Byrd (the greatest); unto today with Jerry Douglas' Dobro (the world's greatest Bluegrass player).
    With the exception of Jerry Douglas and Kayton Roberts, I have never heard any one that can do it is good as Doug Beaumier ; when it comes to Bluegrass and "caintukee country". Wheweee! Not to mention a few "pedal steel" licks in his playing. Is there nothing that this genius can't do? Huh?
    Thank you kind Sir and bless your heart. Sorry I just stumbled on this video. Wow! I could listen to you play forever. Incredible!

    That is super cool! Always been amazed at how good string bending on a lap steel sounds. Sometimes I think I enjoy this sound more than a traditional pedal steel. Great playing!

    Greetings from Nashville. Thank you for sharing. I am working hard to save up for a Duesenberg Bender and wow, now I am completely floored. How you don't lose contact with your tonebar is truly amazing. Dang it all, my bass playing fingers should be strong enough.....ha...I will get it.......Doug, thanks for inspiring me .

    • @dougsteel
      @dougsteel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Make sure to use fairly light strings for the string pulls. I wouldn't recommend this tuning for all round playing. It's just convenient for country bends. Yes, my fingers were sore after playing this! Thanks for checking out the video. 😎

    That was bloody fantastic.
    Who needs pedals?
    Big wow.
    I love listening to you.
    Had a bash at lap steel myself and made a beauty with Jason Lollar horse shoe pick up.
    Lap steel and pedal steel is dying now more the pity.
    It is the STEEL GUITAR that makes it proper country.
    I love you.
    Thank you so very much for reminding me the importance of steel guitar, lap or pedal ...but they MUST BE THERE!!!

    Doug words can't describe how beautiful I think this melody is. I can picture classmates back in the high school gym to a rock & roll dance in the late 1950's this would be a real dandy to jive too. I've read that this school in that era east of Montreal in Port Elgin N.B. was very superior. I come to this melody every once in a while....your fan Gord

    I got my double neck steelguitar in the shop right now. Had it for probably over 10 years, I'm finally taking initiative to getting it into shape and got someone lined up to give me lessons, I can't wait to learn some of these techniques! I've played guitar for 20 years and only know country music from the 40's up to the 70s and steelguitar has always been my favorite!

      Thanks Doug. I am an experienced guitarist so hope to progress quickly. in terms of right hand picking do you have any top tips? I can play some rag time guitar but have never quite mastered the banjo roll type picking. Your right hand seems to be more free flowing, in response to the tune.

    • @stevetatler2307
      @stevetatler2307 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Doug. Assume it is best to start with 6 strings and progress to 8?

    • @dougsteel
      @dougsteel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there is more instructional material for 6 string. The biggest question is what tuning to use. I like C6 for all-round playing. It has full (3 note) major and minor chords and some very convenient bar slants. A6 is good too. For basic rock and blues, probably E tuning. No minor chord with that tuning though. G is good for bluegrass. Most of the production lap steels on the market come with open E tuning. For C6 you need to change the strings, lighter strings needed for C6.

    Beautiful playing. I see at some times the bar is angled, possible to pick up string one semitone lower. However, at other times the steel appears to be just a very small amount (5th semitone?) angled to flatten the bass strings. Is this a part of the country sound. I imagine it would brighten the treble.

    This is terrific. I would like to see more of this do you have for sale study material , dvds, tabs to learn from for this tuning and pulling method only. Anxious to hear. There must be a lot of pick blocking?

      @@dougsteel I think your playing is WONDERFUL!!! Pretty as can be! Hey I just retuned my steel guitar to G and LOVE IT! So much easier than C. I plan on making another SG very soon. I'm rack mounting my amp, mixer, guitar effects pedal, digital horn and theremin into one easy setup. My background music will from a laptop fed into the mixer. I'll also connect up my keyboards and guitars and violin to it. You should here my stuff being run through the effects pedal!!!

    Awesome man! This is exactly the kind of stuff I will try to play when my budget lap steel arrives next week! Which tuningnyou using please?

    • @dougsteel
      @dougsteel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you like it! The tuning is listed in the video description. I created the tuning specifically to play "string pulls" that sound like a pedal steel guitar... but it's not a good all-round tuning for playing most styles of music. It's more of a novelty tuning. Pulling on strings with the fingers gets painful after a couple of songs.

    • @wildriverguitarlockdownlic110
      @wildriverguitarlockdownlic110 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dougsteel it's brilliant! I've never .played a lap steel but have one in the mail and I'm excited to give it a go. Have played slide on a standard electric so may have a bit of an idea hopefully. Yes I imagine bending can be painful but am used to doing so on standard guitar esp. using the ring finger so should be ok! Sorry will check the video for your tuning. To sound somewhat like a pedal steel would be an amazing experience. Do you know the solo to "Good to be in Austin" by JJ Cale? It's a short but very sweet solo, player unknown ? Would love to hear your take on it Doug! All the best from the east of England!

    Fab.Doug.It looks like your bending a Tone on 1string but maybe semitone bends on 2,3 and 4 ?

    • @dougsteel
      @dougsteel  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the whole tone pull on string 1 is the main one. Similar to a pedal steel guitar sound... pulling up to the 3rd of the major chord. Also a whole tone pull on string 2 to match the note on string 1 (unison). Also 1/2 step pulls on strings 3 & 4. I don't think there are any pulls on string 5, and none on string 6. Thanks for listening.

    Are you tuned GEGACE?
    Pete

    • @dougsteel
      @dougsteel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Pete, the tuning I'm using for "Country String Pulls" is listed in the video description. I just re-tuned from C6, using the same strings. You might want to go a little lighter (thinner) on the first string because that one needs to be pulled up a whole step, often.
