The Jesus Lizard really had NO rivals of any american band of the early 90s. I saw them live in 1994 and they were absolutely FULL ON dynamite blast live----David Yow out of control, venue full of smoke, a certain type of chaos that could simply not happen at any show today in 2023. I don't think that energy is here anymore. The records were brilliant, but the live experience of them in the early 90s was unrivalled. I've seen 100s and 100s of bands over the years, but nobody was quite like the Jesus Lizard in their heyday.

I would also like to add Drive Like Jehu into that list.

Mclusky, Unwound, At the Drive In! Post-Hardcore really was the absolute best.

Kitchens of Distinction - Strange Free World came out in March, 1991. Amazing indie/shoegaze amalgam.

It was nice to hear 'Drive That Fast' get a spin as part of 6Music's 1991 celebration on Friday!

I had forgotten about Grant Lee Buffalo. I will have to check them out again. Come to think of it, I will have to check out Mazzie Star and the Lemonheads. Good bands. Good times.

How did we end up here? Well, in my case, I was just a little bit too young in the 1980's to fully participate in first the Punk Rock scene and the Hardcore scene in Los Angeles, where I lived- so by the time I was "of age", 18, in 1985, the stuff that had moved me to get involved had calcified, so it was a lot of taking chances. So, for example- I'd made friends with Stabb from Government Issue ( who, by the way, are the undiscovered DC punk band) who introduced me to J Robbins, Walter Schreifels, etc, etc, etc) I mean to the people, not just their music- and these people introduced me to others, and so it went So, it's difficult to trace, but to answer your question, great undiscovered non-grunge bands & artists of the "Grunge era", ummm, there's an awful lot- So, just 10, as an artificial limit: 1. Alloy (Vic Bondi band, not the pop band from later) 2. Arcwelder 3.Bomb 4.Facepuller 5.Half String 6.Heatmiser 7.Hum 8.Low Pop Suicide 9.. Thin White Rope 10. Whipping Boy ( the Irish band, not the Eugene of Oxbow band). So, there's a start. Literally there were hundreds of fantastic bands going around practically undetected...

That's what I love about that era: just so much good stuff going on over so many styles, and the cross pollination of things (like Hum, surely one of the first bands to do that heavy shoegaze thing?)

Here's my 3 (& please note the restraint because I could bore for Britain on this subject):
Polvo - Today's Active Lifestyles. Wonky!
Girls Against Boys - Cruise Yourself. Groovy!
    Milkcult - Love God. Bonkers!

Two major faves of mine from around this time are The Heart Throbs' 'Cleopatra Grip' and The Blue Aeroplanes' 'Swagger.' The latter is a guitar rock masterpiece featuring Angelo Bruschini, who later went on to join Massive Attack.
Also you ought to take a look sometime at 'Chasing Promises' by Breathless, which came out in '89. Overlooked masterpiece that doesn't sound quite like anything else I've ever come across. I tell people not to let the opening track fool them; it's a great song, but is not really typical of the rest of the record.

    • @robgrano6814
      @robgrano6814 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Addendum: "Swagger" contains what is perhaps my favorite segue between two songs in all of rock music. The slow, heavy 'Weightless' gradually fades out while a Burchill-like guitar riff that becomes the intro to "...And Stones" slowly fades in in double time, the fade ending the previous song with a giant snare hit. The guitar continues alone for a bit, but the amazing thing is that you're still not sure exactly what's happening until the kick drum starts in, and finally you get to that that killler lick that ends with the huge power chord which actually starts the song. Genius.

For myself, It's The God Machine and the album "Scenes From A Second Storey" owns the title of lost early 90s classics.

A band I can recommend from the early 90s is Pavement. Beck also started just a few years later (does he still count?).

    Here is my 3
Monster Magnet - Spine of God
Like a cross between Mudhoney and Hawkwind it was described by Melody Maker
    Helmet - In the Meantime
You name checked them so you know what they sound like
The Butthole Surfers - Independent Worm Saloon
Quite simply one of the best bands from the American alt rock scene.
