  • Thanks to our friends at UWF (Brad and Nick), we were able to test our skills out with people with different experience and fighting styles than us and see where we need to improve. Here we're using the Hanweii Hutton sabers and loving every minute of it.

I don't think sport fencing is more realistic but I can see where the rules of priority if used for training could help prevent doubles during sparring. I think it's part of why hutton emphasized the importance of learning foil. Foil really does train staying alive and building wrist strength. Though I do not think priority should be used as a shield to gain points.

Hey, fellow student of Hutton here. Make more of these. This is great material for study, especially for my club. We have a lot of beginners. Great video that clearly has more effort in the slo-mo than most other channels.

2:19 I think you should keep an eye on your hip aswell, it is much more turned to one side than with the others, e.g. 6:04 - the front knee and the hip of "white" face the oponent, the front knee and the hip of the of black/red face the viewer. When you do the "bait" - move in 6:47 the hip is much more centered and so the knee don't twist at all :) whereas in 8:12 the hip is facing completly to the viewer , so instead of turning the hip back, knee turns to a more natural position. I'am no sabre guy tough, but had the same problem in longsword aswell. When i fixed the hip, the knee problem disapeared aswell :) I think this is because the knee unintentionaly is more prone to go in its natural position which is in the same direction as the hip points.

Great to see a HEMA club doing Saber! Remember to cover the line and get out of there after landing a hit!

Also, a good outside-line parry for cuts to the hand is the sixte beat or bind. It is a pretty tough parry to pull off in real time though.

Of course 😁 We've just had a lot of major life changes recently so it's taken some time to get everything together

how does this hold up to larger swords heavy saber/ longsword?

Apologies for the incredibly late response 😅 we haven't been able to properly test that out quite yet. The longswords we have are red dragon and are very light and weak compared to the heft of these solid spears, so it doesn't stand a chance. It's been a hot minute since we've updated our gear, but if we ever do a Purple heart longsword vs Spear video, I'll be sure to let you know 😁 I can tell you with certainty though that particular Landschelt soldiers were recorded having been able to disrupt pikemen on the front lines by engaging groups with the great swords, allowing for other soldiers to engage with little threat, so in a war setting I would put my money on greatswords in particular, though fencing wise I feel like spears simply have too great of an advantage most of the time.
