In 1963 my Dad went into a guitar store in Beaumont, Texas, to buy a Gibson EB-0 bass. The shop owner, from the way the story was told to me, pointed him towards a stack of cases along the side of the shop, where the EB-0 was sitting underneath an acoustic case. Being curious, my Dad opened the acoustic case and found a 1963 Gibson Dove in Cherry Sunburst. He inquired about the Dove and the shop owner cut him a deal and sold him the bass, the Dove and as many picks as he could fit in one handful for $600. The bass is long gone but the Dove has remained a part of the family since 1963 and I still enjoy playing it today.
@@itsjustmeMike527 you know, my Dad never talked about the name of the store. At least not that I remember. I was born in the '70s, and we didn't live in Beaumont, so I never thought to get those kinds of details from him. It kind of makes me wonder if, since the guitar has only every belonged to one family, if we could get Gibson to track down what store it was sent to after production.
In 1972, my best friend bought a Hummingbird new, for $500. I had something cheap that I didn’t like playing, but strumming that Hummingbird made me love the guitar, and motivated me to earn enough money to buy nice guitars.
I love Gibson acoustics. I have an early ‘90’s Gibson Gospel I bought new. I love it the same way you love your Hummingbird. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I love that you lend your guitars to your friends - that's what I do as well and they always sound better when they come back and hey, not to mention the smiles on my friends' faces. Priceless.
Wonderful video! I remember the first time I played a Hummingbird. My friend who worked at the Parsons Street Gibson factory had just snagged an early 80’s cherry sunburst that had a slightly twisted neck dirt cheap. One strum made me realize where Keith Richards acoustic tone came from.
I own a 64 Hummingbird. It sounds crazy. The bass is deep and it’s more spanky than any other acoustic I’ve tried. It was owned by a farmer in Winnipeg until I bought it last year. you can still smell the farm in fact haha.
It’s really sweet of your mom to do that for you that was my favorite part of this episode. Things like that Really warms you up on cold days like this
Yeah, what is it about old, good Gibsons? It's "that sound" on so many great, classic recordings, and yet today unappreciated. Thanks for the reminder.
Damn Baxter, you’re an awesome salesman here and I don’t think you even know it! Which makes this even better! You just can hear the passion you got in this. Beautiful guitar. Excellent video Baxter. 👍
This is one of those guitars that I let get away a long time ago. I was in the army in 1972 and one of the guys in the barracks had one that he needed to sell and I could have bought it for $200 with the case. The problem was $200 was a lot of money at that time. I did buy a new 68 Gibson SG Special when I was in high school and had enough good sense to hold on to that. Still play it quite often. Old Gibson's still have a magic to them that some of the new stuff just doesn't have.
I love that you’re showing an acoustic for a change! The Hummingbird is a great choice to feature. Definitely reminds me of The Beatles as well. You guys seem to lean to a lot to electrics like many channels. Hope to see more acoustics! Please feature a KLOS carbon fiber. It’s nice to feature a truly CF guitar that’s not at Breedlove prices, made in the US, and sounds wonderful (among other benefits like a lifetime warranty, durability, ease of travel with a bolt on neck that removes easily with all strings left on and a special gig bag, easy to care for, no longevity). It’s nice to look to the past, present, and future of guitars! Hope you’ll check out KLOS if you’re not familiar - they offer lots of stringed instruments (including b stock). They sell at many mom and pop shops, their own site, Amazon, and other sites with mostly five star reviews. They have an amazing noiseless amp cable and other cool stuff too!
These old Hummingbirds and Doves always call to mind Tom Petty. That perfect strumming guitar that doesn't get in the way of vocals, and sits perfectly in the mix.
Ooohh - lucky you. Sounds and looks real good. Plus the rare 1965-11/16 combo. Could you tell about the strings - perhaps your string philosophy. . Keep flying
You my friend .. have a guitar that has something 'special' ... a magic as you said. It sounds effortless and ...'right'. Your's sounds lovely, mate. Even Lady Gaga said ... her producer (Mark Ronson) once put a 'Hummingbird' in her hands and said play something special. She was impressed by his selection .. and it struck her ... because she knows as well .. even as a Pop Star ... The Hummingbird is a special one. The song she recorded was 'JoAnne' ... title track from her album. It is special ... perhaps the guitar helped that out. What is your favorite acoustic guitar? You mention this is your #2. What is #1?
I'm a Guild fan and been so since the early 60s. But I know that the Early/mid 60s Hummingbirds are the best sounding acoustic guitars ever made. This came from back in 67' and a friend had a 65 or 66 Hummingbird and I still think that nothing I've heard in all this time sounded as good as his.
Lol couldn't imagine my mom gifting me a guitar like that - the guitar gear my mom gets me is like a metal pick with like "world best son" engraved on it haha, still super sweet of her.. but maybe I'll send her this video so she can step up her game 😂

Excellent story dude!!! Thanks for sharing this!
love the pick throw in by the owner......heck today that around $100 worth of picks!!

Thanks for the acoustic content
This was the most Mr. Rodgers episode! I work from home and start my work day with coffee and these videos, can’t get any better!
Yep, wish I was in that neighborhood with the funky haired Mr. Rogers.
The Hummingbird is just the coolest looking acoustic guitar...period. I've always wanted one.
Very kind and generous of you to share your guitars, Baxter! You are a cool dude!
I love Gibson acoustics. I have an early ‘90’s Gibson Gospel I bought new. I love it the same way you love your Hummingbird. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Oh man, I love that guitar Baxter. You should call your parents and tell them that you love them. It’s just awesome!
Very Cool, I think I will play my acoustic this morning, for a change.
Awesome guitar Baxter! Nothing in the world better than a great vintage acoustic...
Thanks for sharing those cool stories, guys! Bless you all.
Thanks for sharing that beautiful guitar with us Baxter.
We need more of these videos, it’s the best we there is a backstory to the instrument.
That’s a beauty, you’re so spot on Gibson acoustics have a unique voice that you can tell right away.
This is such a great channel

I sounds beautiful! And I love the way you express your affection for those treasures.

Thanks for this !.I love and appreciate all you do; especially the occasional acoustic stuff. More acoustic would be wonderful.
Beautiful hummingbird Baxter. Sounds lovely also. How lucky you were as a lad to have such wonderful parents!
It’s really sweet of your mom to do that for you that was my favorite part of this episode. Things like that Really warms you up on cold days like this

So glad you are bringing this back wall series back. Please keep doing them!
The commentary makes me want to be worthy to play an instrument like that. Thanks Baxter.
That is my favorite of your collection so far. Amazing guitar Baxter!! "Mom & Dad bought me this guitar..." is the best part of the story.
Great story and what a generous guy that you are Baxter, letting your friends play that beautiful guitar.
Damn Baxter, you’re an awesome salesman here and I don’t think you even know it! Which makes this even better! You just can hear the passion you got in this.
Beautiful guitar. Excellent video Baxter. 👍
A beautiful souding guitar. Thanks for sharing this.
Hummingbirds are the prettiest acoustic guitars ever made in my opinion!
Thank you Baxster! Thank you for sharing!
Beautiful playing and guitar!
Baxter thank you for sharing this.
Man, that’s a beaut. Thanks for sharing!

Those are really well made guitars. My uncle has an early 70s and I stood on it when I was a baby. Still rockin.
A beautiful instrument... from somebody that was also born in 1965, it has aged gracefully!
That's what acoustics should sound like. Beautiful
your a classy ambassador for those all of your guitars I feel the same about my way smaller collection, I'm just a caretaker. Very cool
Gorgeous guitar! This was the Bob Ross Baxter 🙂

I've been to the shop once. Neither Baxter or Jonathan were there though. Next time if Baxter is there I'll have to ask to play it ;-)
Nice Baxter, love those Hummingbirds and quite touching to hear how much it means to you and why😊
Thanks for doing these guitar spotlights! It's a great thing as we learn a little more about the model guitar.
Fantastic guitar, story, and great playing as always
Thank you 🙏
She's a beauty. I wouldn't share it!
That one is a winner!!
What a beauty!
It's beautiful

You have a cool Mom.
I love that pickguard on that Humming bird. The new ones just don't have that look.
⚓️ Thanks Casino 😎
Is that intro song the monster mash? If not intended to be it is the same chord progression. If so, well played!

That's the acoustic guitar I hear in my head.
Keith Richards on the Let it Bleed album, Hummingbird on several tracks.
Very nice!! :)

I Own the 65 Dove that has Dearmond 260 pickup mounted in J160E position, and will bring mine if ever headed your way
That is a peachy humming bird
I always listen to Baxter in the shower!
I like it
I'm coming to your store one day just to strum that guitar. even if it's just a "G" chord. Just because I love guitars that much.
I bought a J45 in the 70s for $450. Of course I sold it a year later. Beautiful. I was a dumbass when I was younger.
you should post some Beatles covers with this (please)
I have an Epiphone Dove but I'd love to get the real thing some day. Just so expensive
I agree...if they are not getting played, I feel they are dying in a way. It's why I only keep 3-4 guitars around at any time. Sweet tones!!!
😎👍
😎👍❤🖖
Got some Joni sounds
Kool
Imagine if I said That PRS tho
Nice, you need to front a country band.
Hummingbirds were Rolling Stones guitars - The Beatles was NEVER even close to them
Guess you know.
