I never expected you to cover to this game! I play OSRS fairly often. Agree with all points. I would add that, to me, the best thing about OSRS is setting goals in sections. So if I want de Hard Diaries done I need: the right skill levels (which requires skilling), certain quests (which require other quests and levels) and other requirements. Setting goals and then making plans to reach those goals is so much fun in this game.
Entertaining as always, Clemps! This video was a trip down memory lane for me. The main thing keeping me from playing old school rs is the idea of having to play a fresh account. I don't want to do all that shit all over again. Multiple 99s, over 2k total level, a large number of quests done. The idea of doing it all over again is such a massive turn off. I wish I could re experience it though. 2007 runescape was like the peak for me. Then the big changes to trade and the wild were announced and basically destroyed my clan. We were a group of people who liked doing various skilling activities together and often had plenty of stuff for people to craft with for free exp. Christmas drop parties were our big thing every year on world 42. The Knights of True Spirit, or KoTS. I even ground out 99 smithing so I could make rune stuff for the drop parties. I spent so much time working on it at the varrock west bank that I made a lot of friends. On the off chance anyone actually recognizes the name, I was called Ryokobalta.
These videos keep getting better and better dude, and I love seeing you branching out to new and different topics! And as always, I also love seeing you slip in those Yuyushiki clips. :3
Run escape was the first mmo I played and the first game I played online period, it holds immense nostalgia for me and will play it for as long as I can. Glad to see someone else holds the appreciation I do for it
No joke, literally love the content you put out. Every video is made with so much effort and you can tell the passion and enthusiasm put into them. Love your stuff Papa Clemps
Thank you Clemps. Runescape was my first game ever. Back when I listened to Green Day and had to tell me mom not to get on the phone (Fun dial up times). But it makes me so happy that my favorite content creator acknowledges this beautiful game.
Though different from your usual content this video was thoroughly enjoyable and i agree with a lot of the sentiments you've said. To me Old School Runescape till this day is unrivaled when it comes to going beyond just nostalgia factor. I played this as a kid and in my late 20's and STILL play it. I've seen many others my age echo this sentiment but you truly can't "quit" Runescape and that in itself is actually kind of insane since it holds true. With so many content updates and just going back to Skilling, or Quests, to things you couldn't achieve as a kid is beyond rewarding, specially if you play Ironman, the grind, the incentives feel justified as opposed to playing a Main and having the G.E, regardless, tangent aside, stellar video Clemps !
Runescape was one of those games my friends raved about a lot but I never really got myself into. I remember stealing a lot of bananas and getting chased around by pirates or something that looked the part. Great vid, Clemps!
Man, my favourite memory playing Runescape as a kid was, after playing for a while and getting lots of good stuff in my inventory, I was wandering around when some player told me that there was a church up north where I could grab a good item, an orb or something. I went there, grabbed it, and was instantly beaten to death by angry priests, losing everything. 10/10
I found you through your podcast with super butter buns, and this video forced my hand to immediately sub. I love your brand of humor and editing, and this video finally encouraged me to get back into OSRS, since it’s been sitting quietly of my phone due to me not knowing exactly what to do on it. Enough of my rambling though, this video was incredible, and I’m looking forward to watching more of your content!
Hey Clemps, I’ve been a fan for about a year now. I think your content is amazing. I found your channel because you have the best videos about the DrakenNier games. Also, I played oldschool Runescape as a kid and paid the five bucks a month and it was amazing. I would go back to it but I find that Minecraft is a good alternative java game lol. Also I watched Into the Abyss because of your video discussing it. Thanks for opening my eyes to this stuff and being so entertaining. You seem really smart in your videos and you’re very funny.
I felt like such a badass for doing the dragon killer quest and being able to wear rune platemail. Played it a bunch back in the day and picked it back up again for a bit when it came on mobile.
There are times I do wish I got into this game when I was a kid. I feel like I really missed out. Everyone at school was playing this game and having a blast, but little baby Nexus was stuck with an old, beat-up laptop to play PC games on. The control scheme was what irked me the most back then, since I didn't have a proper mouse to play it with, just the god awful pad. Years later, finally played the game on a decent computer, but the magic that swept over so many of my friends was now dead and gone. There were so many other games that I had played by that point that playing old school Runescape just didn't wow me like it should have. Nevertheless, another great review/explanation Clemps!
My man! OSRS is the shit! I always keep coming back to it ever since I started way back. I was pretty glad when they made it a standalone version after EOC
ah, runescape, and it's beautiful pitch black skybox. i always played on the freezone, and lemme tell you it was still worth it. nothing beats setting a personal goal(for me it was making a cake) and slowly leveling up various skills to continue leveling up your chosen one. fishing for an hour, cooking all the fish, leveling up woodcutting and firemaking 'cause it's faster than running all the way to a stove, a perfect feedback loop designed to make you play indefinitely. i love how the chunky graphics haven't fallen in the uncanny valley, and the muted colors make it easy on the eyes. it's perfect and i wouldn't change a thing about it.
perfect timing, i feel like a lot of people are getting back into runescape recently. i fired up a new character after like a decade of not playing and it's still a lot of simple, charming fun.
I have virtually no experience with Runescape (not an MMO guy), outside of listening to friends occassionally play it while chilling in a voice channel on discord; so this video was an interesting foray into largely unknown territory for me. Gold Star mr. Clemps!
Runescape is great. I always liked it and I definitely agree with the points you made and now I want to play Runescape again and do the things I never managed to do.
Started playing RS right around the time Runescape 2 came out in 2004, and since then I still play on and off every few months across several accounts including my original. Hard to find the time to dedicate these days but I still adore the game and will likely never fully quit playing it.
Was bored and found this video. It's weird I manly a guy who plays FPS's but as a child runescape was the single only MMO that caught my attention and held it tightly. I'm a grown man now and have tried other many other MMO's but still could never get into anything besides runescape. It was mainly its player driven world, how you had to learn the typical selling prices of item so you knew you werent geting ripped off, making random friends just striking conversations with strangers doing similar task as you. I will forever love this game as it was a loving spot in my childhood for me and my siblings. And as a father now I cant wait to one day introduce my daughter to it.
Runescape is one of the best games I've ever played, absolutely in my top 10. I'm so glad to see the explosion of popularity/player count the game has gotten over the past couple years. I started playing it when I was 8 years old and continue to play it to this day at the age of 21.
As someone who grew up with Runescape, I actually LOVED how it looked. The little 'early 3d' graphics are what rekindles my nostalgia for it, much like early Zoo Tycoon or Sims games did.
Clemps you comedic genius. The bit with the Automata clip had me laughing so hard I had to pause the video. Anyways, I'm a 15 year RS veteran and I love the game to pieces!
You never truly quit Runescape, you're just AFK for longer periods of time. I've been playing it on and off since 2005 and have sunk more hours into it than any other game I own. There's just something timelessly charming about it.
I played RS so much as a kid. Fast forward to a few months ago, I decided to give RS another go, and it's managed to suck me back in. It's such a simple game, but it's still a lot of fun. Now to just get to the late game content that I never managed to get to as a kid
Fuck am I really about to check out runescape? I have never played this game dispite having it as my profile picture. It looks cozy I love the art style. Also you're hella brave for sharing old videos of you as a kid.
I'm never going to play Runescape, because it's an MMO, but a lot of my favourite Clemps videos are ones where he talks about some game I have no intention of ever trying myself.
I remember my cousin going on and on about how he was so excited to get max level firemaking and Mining. And listening to him talk to his online friends how about some of the Quest and all the crazy things they to do would always get me excited to play it but I could never really get into it too much. Now that it's on mobile which most of those games are mindless anyway it might be worth giving it a shot again
Hey Just want you to know, this video got me to try osrs after not playing it since like 2005. I'm enjoying it immensely and it is relaxing. Thank you Clemps!
I do think that part of my problem initially with this game was that I was expecting something more active. Less just click the thing and wait for your inventory to fill up with it. Having two monitors really helps with enjoying this kind of game. If you're into this kind of thing, you may want to look into Trimps. If you've ever checked out games like Candy Box or its sequel, you may like it.
Fuck yeah Clemps. I fucking love me some OSRS.(been playing since primordial). Still playing it right to this day! I've even started to stream it because of you! It's such a great chill game to just grind it out ya know? Really really love this video Clemps! Keep being such a great creator!
A lot of the reasons you brought up for liking Runescape are reasons why I used to enjoy Ultima Online and still enjoy FFXI today. I've never played the original Runescape, but I'd be up for giving it a shot. The only version I played was one of the newer ones. Also for what it's worth, I enjoy your thoughts on games (and whatever other topics interest you) in general, not just JRPGs.
I still play Runescape 3. It still has a lot of that relaxing vibe to it. The pacing and reward structure is a lot faster though. Overall I have to say I like RS3 a bit more, but OSRS will always have a place in my heart.
@@midnitestate You can definitely pay money to get more rolls on what's essentially a gacha system. Usually this amounts to free or bonus exp (on VERY rare occassion you might get "Lucky" equipment which still has the same skill requirements, it's just a 'free' version of an item. That's not really that bad though. You get rolls per-day and additional ones from quests, and if you really wanted to you can buy the rolls with in-game gold. Real money definitely speeds it along, I've used it to 'skip' past leveling in particularly rough skill ranges. But at the same time a lot of RS3's content is way more geared towards high-skill-rank quests and mobs anyway.
I think a lot of your stance is based on it being your first MMO. Everyone's first MMO they look at differently from the rest. Mine was maplestory and while I can objectively see all of its problems (design and cash shop based) I still get the urge to play almost every year. It's also interesting to find out people's first MMOs and current favorites, usually there's some sort of similarity.
I had the "graphics" argument recently with respect to FF7 Me: "this game is as good as I remember, there are no nostalgia goggles, it's just good" Annoyance: "yeah but it looks bad though" Me: *looks down at beautifully drawn backgrounds, excellent setpiecing, and metric shitton of enemy designs* "U wut m8?"
I mean I get the playground stuff. I was always obsessed with stuff like Gaia Online and Adventure Quest and all the other kids would laugh with their Club Penguin accounts. Safe to say what happened with CP and I still visit my gaia account every once in awhile to chill and relax, and dress up my anime self. Runescape doesn't look like my type of game, but I respect the community and the devs for keeping it around and alive for so long!
Oh god i'm only halfway thru and I already want to make a new account. I don't have time for "real" mmo's and i haven't played one at all since Guild Wars 2 first came out. You nailed it about how relaxing the gameplay is. I love "ambient" games.
I'd be really curious to hear your opinion on EverQuest. It has a lot of the same structure you like around exploration and quests, and is, er... aged (just hit it's 20th year). Love your analysis and humor, and really appreciate your in-depth summaries.
I truly loved the game as a wee kiddo who didn't even know English that much. Now that I actually know the bloody language, and since it's been a while, I can't really get back into it. Sure, I made an account and did some stuff for the nostalgia trip, but I think I'll leave this beautiful game to my memories. Those were some good times, endlessly killing cockroaches for gems under the barbarian village. Can't even remember why.
I remember 2D runescape when I was in middle school and played "old school" in highschool, pretty sure it came out in 2006. Anyway, I miss the adventures I had in runescape.
>Didn't spell Defence like Jagex do Gotta love me some Old School. The open freedom of exploration without forced survival elements or cumbersome resource management is the most relaxing thing I could imagine in a game. Forget the sandbox analogy, it's like swimming in a pool. You make your own fun, but nobody will try to argue that swimming can't be fun. I agree about the quests, too. Giving the option for structured play prevents things from being overwhelming - you always have potential frames of reference for what to do next. It's part of the reason I loved the introduction of pets. The big beef I have with the game is its increased focus on maxing recently (and the players getting too fussy about balance, but that's not the game's problem). I made it to 2100 total before real life took over and I couldn't realistically get the satisfaction of one level a day anymore. Forcing such a large, concrete goal by giving it gameplay effects changed the context of how I play. After I did everything I really wanted to do, there was... still more stuff I felt like I had to do. I would have found a new endgame goal eventually, but the game keeps nudging me into doing specific things, and that turns it from a journey into a grind. As an aside, I'm a little bit mad at the Katawa Shoujo music you snuck in there. A man can only take so much nostalgia in one video. Anyway, thanks for posting your insights and letting me vent my wall of text. Apparently Konduit's password database just got leaked so now I'm off to secure my several hundred dollars' worth of Internet pixels.
My biggest Runescape memory isn't even from the game itself, it was that damn Scholastic Runescape guide that eluded me from every book-fair and was never available for checkout at the school library because some group of nerds checked it out and never decided to return the damn thing.
Just a week ago I decided to do the routine "what's going on with runescape" thing, which I've done every few years or so since I stopped playing in 2006ish. Every time I just login for about 20 minutes, look at my items, lament the past, kill some guards to ease the pain, and log off. This time was different. Old School Runescape? Hell yes! But oh no, our accounts weren't ported into OSRS... Hmmm, should I? ... Ok, I'm doing it. *create a new account* A week later, I'm doing quests, levelling up, and falling in love with the gameplay all over again. And actually, the grand exchange is dope for stocking up on required items before embarking on quests. Fucking love this game.
Me before the video: Man, this really brings back some memories. Me 10 minutes into the video: Fine, you convinced me to play it again. Now I have to renew my membership from 10 years ago.
Love the Yuyushiki clips and your live action reactions... Oh also, been wanting to say this: nice shirt. i apologize this comment has little to do with the topic but I don't even wanna think about MMOs. Mouse based RSI and lack of time are killing me.
Hey Clemps, did you know that in RS3 you can make it play like OSRS? There's an option to set your skills to the hotbar, and it'll automatically cycle through them just from clicking on an enemy as you usually would.
I remember in elementary school when a friend of mine played Runescape and I got into it as well due to him. And then as consequence cuz I didn't know shit back then I got into Rune Factory because "is Rune... Factory maybe Runescape spinoff!?" One of my cringe memories is how last day of school teach let us play and he asked what we were doing and I was like "I'm playing rune factory, and he's playing Runescape, they're like similar things!"
I dint played runescape (im more of ragnarok gal) but i love this ancient pc games aesthetic. So brown and blocky yet cozy. Im looking at those graphic and my smile goes up to venus.
when you mentionned the desert i remember running like hell mining and dodging those fucking scorpions. Xp Farming the grey and white knights. Farming prayer by burying bones
I remember playing an old MMO called Tibia, which was basically the poor man version of Ultima Online. Back in those days you could kill other players pretty much everywhere with no repercussions and you lost everything you carried with you if you died. I was never particularly good at it, but I think that's where I learned how to grief and discovered my talent for pissing people off.
I haven't watched a Clemps video for ages because they've all been for games I haven't played yet, finally I can return to my boy. P.S Watch Swampletics
No matter how many times I stop playing, RS always pulls me back. I grew up on internet that couldn't even handle a few TH-cam vids a day; so it was one of the only games I could play online.

Ive been waiting for this video, ever since that cheeky Rune Scim joke in one of your Automata videos!
There is still a soft warm place in my heart for RS. Great vid!!
ah, runescape, and it's beautiful pitch black skybox.
i always played on the freezone, and lemme tell you it was still worth it. nothing beats setting a personal goal(for me it was making a cake) and slowly leveling up various skills to continue leveling up your chosen one. fishing for an hour, cooking all the fish, leveling up woodcutting and firemaking 'cause it's faster than running all the way to a stove, a perfect feedback loop designed to make you play indefinitely.
i love how the chunky graphics haven't fallen in the uncanny valley, and the muted colors make it easy on the eyes. it's perfect and i wouldn't change a thing about it.
I can't say how much I love Clemps videos. They're so good.
perfect timing, i feel like a lot of people are getting back into runescape recently. i fired up a new character after like a decade of not playing and it's still a lot of simple, charming fun.
YESSS, Thank you for making this video
Loved the video Clemps! Been playing Runescape for years now myself and nice to see appreciation for its Quests!
A reminder of the Monkey Nuts boom of 2017 which was amazing to watch from afar.
Hey clemps, don't worry about this not being your "usual" genre, this was great. Make the things you wanna make, the passion really shines through!
For what it's worth, love the Index reference you used.
As the one sad bastard still playing Neopets in 2019, sometimes you just need an old goodie to unwind with. It's like comfort food for the brain.
Ah yes, my favorite Point-and-click adventure game.
(Point^2)*(click^2)*adventure
Thank you, such a legend, one of my favourite subs by far! This game stole my life and I don't regret it.
The point about always finding something new has always been one of my favourite things about RuneScape.
I've been really in the mood to play Old-school Runescape, and this video is pushing me closer to just opening it up and starring.
this game was my childhood and I still love it
Wow, you literally play pretty much everything I play. Love your vids Clemps!
Hey
Just want you to know, this video got me to try osrs after not playing it since like 2005.
I can't watch Clemp's videos without falling in love for him
Fuck yeah Clemps.
Also for what it's worth, I enjoy your thoughts on games (and whatever other topics interest you) in general, not just JRPGs.
clemps i immediately downloaded runescape after watching this and the first quest I completed was a Scream parody with riddles, I am 100% locked in.
I still play Runescape 3.
It still has a lot of that relaxing vibe to it. The pacing and reward structure is a lot faster though. Overall I have to say I like RS3 a bit more, but OSRS will always have a place in my heart.
but doesn't it have alot of pay to win aspects? (I haven't played it but herd that from the fans)
I had the "graphics" argument recently with respect to FF7
Me: "this game is as good as I remember, there are no nostalgia goggles, it's just good"
Annoyance: "yeah but it looks bad though"
Me: *looks down at beautifully drawn backgrounds, excellent setpiecing, and metric shitton of enemy designs*
"U wut m8?"
im in that age group where all my friends played runescape but i never touched it myself tbh
Before Runescape, there was Ultima Online - that's where my nostalgia lies for much the same reasons. What a unique MMO that was for it's time.
touch it
I have runescape old school on my phone
This birthday literally just keeps giving and giving.
MMOs did not come out until I was in highschool. But I like the fact that you can play ruinscape on the smartphone now.
>Didn't spell Defence like Jagex do
Gotta love me some Old School.
I see Clemps, I clicks. Definitely my favorite TH-camr right now, keep it up homie!
Runescape. A game that needs no defense...
_if you're a pure_
Thanks for reminding me how busted the combat system is, I hate it.
@@TazTheYellow
Pures are over rated only useful in pvp where cb level matters
Love the Yuyushiki clips and your live action reactions...
Oh also, been wanting to say this: nice shirt.
i apologize this comment has little to do with the topic but I don't even wanna think about MMOs. Mouse based RSI and lack of time are killing me.
Hey Clemps, did you know that in RS3 you can make it play like OSRS? There's an option to set your skills to the hotbar, and it'll automatically cycle through them just from clicking on an enemy as you usually would.
I still have my first account with Bunny Ears. Will give it another look. Thanks, Clemps! Great video!
I remember in elementary school when a friend of mine played Runescape and I got into it as well due to him. And then as consequence cuz I didn't know shit back then I got into Rune Factory because "is Rune... Factory maybe Runescape spinoff!?"
One of my cringe memories is how last day of school teach let us play and he asked what we were doing and I was like "I'm playing rune factory, and he's playing Runescape, they're like similar things!"
I dint played runescape (im more of ragnarok gal) but i love this ancient pc games aesthetic. So brown and blocky yet cozy. Im looking at those graphic and my smile goes up to venus.
10:50 Yep, my friends who have never touched it still look at me like I'm some kind of joke whenever it comes up. Hurts, man.
when you mentionned the desert i remember running like hell mining and dodging those fucking scorpions. Xp Farming the grey and white knights. Farming prayer by burying bones
Got super happy when I saw the video in my notifications.
4:16 Steer: Automoota
I haven't watched a Clemps video for ages because they've all been for games I haven't played yet, finally I can return to my boy.
P.S Watch Swampletics
No matter how many times I stop playing, RS always pulls me back. I grew up on internet that couldn't even handle a few TH-cam vids a day; so it was one of the only games I could play online.
