I looked up whether shipping containers can float and found this: "Most containers sink quite rapidly to the ocean floor once they hit the water. But depending on their contents, they may stay afloat for days or even weeks before sliding beneath the surface. This process can take even longer for refrigerated containers on account of their buoyant insulation." This info changes my perspective on traveling on the ocean.

If you sail in any shipping channel regularly you will encounter a container at least once in your life. Multiple sailing bloggers have seen floating containers. There are currently no efforts to spot these containers and recover them or sink them unfortunately. People have definitely slammed into them a few times including cargo vessels or military ships.

Come to think back, we shipped Cat engines all over the globe.
We did make effort to seal well namely for corrosion, an impossible task. Mostly OTR engines but some marine too. White w/chrome of course.

in BC we have a lot of deadheads just below the waters' surface, mainly logs and I'd hit those with my Skagit 17 foam core hull. The Skagit was built for steelhead fishing on the Skagit, a river in Wa. state. Lots of rocks there to hit!!

6:57 My boat is constantly being misreported by Marine Traffic. It is always being detected by the same station in Amsterdam. I had lots of emails back and forth with the technical staff but it could not be resolved. The verdict in the end was an other vessel using my MMSI but as the vessel was reported in both Small craft Marina, as well as container terminals, I did not see that as very likely.

  •  ปีที่แล้ว +4

For the AIS issue the most common scenario is just another transponder sending the same code. Either by entering the code by mistake or inheriting a previously installed device at the other ship.
Other reasonable case is someone injecting simulated NMEA for testing, even if intended to another ship system.

He has answered this in previous videos. The answer is yes. In the case of the sinking of this yacht, that Princess Di used a lot, they were probably traveling at high speed and could have possibly hit a lost shipping container that fell off a ship in rough weather. It happens more than one would think, although it is an anomaly when a boat hits one. But this boat was a high-speed boat that even something smaller floating would have done a lot of damage to it. The process of collecting on insurance can be cumbersome and seriously hard to do, and the boats are generally able to fetch more money floating than they are from insurance.

By asking about vessel fires, sinkings, and crashes, @paulahoskins9972 could be indirectly linking such unfortunate events to certain nationalities or cultures, possibly seen as more prone to such occurrences due to inherent stereotypes. The comment, though seemingly benign, may perpetuate such biases. It's crucial to maintain a discourse that doesn't inadvertently cast a negative light on any group. The facts that the impact with a "floating object" was sufficient to fatally damage the hull and that flooding was reported in the engine room, both suggest that it was travelling at speed and `on the plane', enabling the object to impact the vessel midships. Cruising at lower speed would've led to a bow strike and perhaps survivable damage...

Princess Diana - Sinking doesn’t say much about the compartmentalization of the original design or perhaps watertight integrity was compromised during modifications in the past. Looks like progressive flooding of unknown origin. Maybe yacht hit something, maybe a watertight fitting failed, maybe an insurance payout given its age?
PS - 2500 meters of water probably means wreck won’t be recovered unless French military wants to conduct a salvage exercise.

If they were flying along at around 35 knots or so then a solid object could easily have hit the bottom of the hull multiple times or effectively be dragged along the underneath of the entire underside of the hull. Hence multiple holes.

I think one was an ex-coast guard boat in the Carribean. The other case was possibly in Turkey, where the underwater landscape was a barren desert, just sand, except for at the sunk boat, where a whole population of sea life occupied the boat, attracting other sea life to the vicinity.

I'm surprised they didn't try to repair the hole with a piece of plywood and some screws in that yacht before they floated it. Must not have been able to.

At 65ft it's more of a boat than a yacht....

When will yachts like this one, ever be fitted out with Airbags that can be deployed in moments like these, to help keep the yacht ⛵ from sinking? I think Airbags are a jolly good idea.

Maybe the Eclipse owners removed the AIS, kept it powered, and flew it to Istanbul and back in a light airplane🙂

July 29th? July 29th was the anniversary date of Princess Di's marriage to Prince Charles -- July 29, 1981.

The 29th of July would also of been the anniversary of the day, Diana married Charles. I know this cause it was on my 10th birthday in 1981.

Random question do superyacht owners let you use there WiFi

    • @itsruf1

I would bet they are password protected, to protect their filrs/ data just like we do.
I kinda doubt the owner has a clue about many things going on his vessel.

No. Boat wifi costs are insane. Not even billionaires are giving it out for free.

Can you do report on that supertanker that was on fire with all the cars on board. They towed that out to sea as well. Has that sunk now? Who is going to cover the environmental catastrophe when that sinks?
