I wouldn't be worried because The Italian Sea Group would bumble that just like they bumbled yacht designs and Bayesian discussions which just make them look guilty as all heck now.
They don't know much about damage control. Their initial reaction should have been all about compassion for the people who died - not indignantly claiming the crew were at fault and the boat was unsinkable. And they should then have said they would co-operatate fully with the investigation and await the outcome of the inquiry before commenting further. Filing lawsuits all over the place (including the widow of the Bayesian owner FFS!), and against anyone suggesting there may have been design faults is damaging their brand, not helping it.
The even crazier thing is that they didn’t construct the boat and only bought the brand assets out of bankruptcy. Which would mean they had no liability, and they could say boats built under their ownership have been to exacting standards.
Matey, I say take off some time - from both jobs - until after Christmas! We could look forward to a 2-3 month wrap of events from you in the new year. All the best, love your work. ⛵

Depends where the case is actually being held. When Danish Railways sued Ansaldo Breda (an italian train builder) the judge awarded 'victory' to ansaldo because 'losing might damage their reputation'. Yes, that's part of the point...

This lawsuit isn't gonna work out at all. Good luck suing a mainstream US media outlet for doing standard reporting, lol. Doesn't work over here like it works over there.
I really wish these big companies dedicated as much time to proving they're the best through good end results as they do to squawking about being the best and threatening anyone who says otherwise. It's in every industry at this point and it's gotten completely absurd.
Agreed, the moment you make those vents remote rather than automatic it becomes dependant on a member of the crew being able to operate them in time, the lifeboat vents are automatic (and the vessels are self righting) because they assume that in a crisis the people responsible for operating the lifeboat might be incapacitated in some way such as being thrown off balance when the boat suddenly heels over to 43 degrees without warning.
@@davidorf3921 Also with a sailboat if you actually have a proper knockdown it's entirely possible a human won't be able to respond quickly enough. If you read reports of knockdowns that have happened to other sailing vessels (admittedly mostly a lot smaller) they're not slow gradual things, they're very rapid.
Indeed, but the closers were never meant to guard against a sudden roll. They were probably only intended to be closed if they wanted to sail. The main thing that sank this ship was still the weather.
@@testboga5991 With such a low safe keel angle it should have been equipped with automatic closers, that is my point. It was designed to be 'unsinkable', didn't put much effort in, did they. I bet they didn't skimp on the Italian marble and exotic hardwoods

Right? Not that I'm rich, but if I was and there was an incident and the first thing you did was blame everyone else and deny any possibility of fault and not express sympathy for the people lost, I am taking my money and going elsewhere. That is not the behavior of a company that actually wants to build the best. All they had to do was say "we believe our boats are built to the highest possible standards but we welcome an investigation into this incident and will cooperate fully to establish if there was anything we could have done differently or any different advice we should be giving our owners going forward about crew training" or some such PR statement.
The yacht was struck by a tornado while at anchor. As a captain. When at anchor i pay close attention to the weather and have twice pulled up my anchors and relocated my vessel safely out of the way of a tornadic systen/ rotating cell. One of which formed an f2 that tracked through the space i had been anchord at. I think everyone has forgotten that this vessle was hit with winds speeds well in excess of 200mph. No vessle at anchor would survive this senario. Had the anchor been pulled up and engines were running it coukd have been moved or even the tornado might have pushed the boat out of the way.

You can't blame the crew or Captain when they are following protocols under those conditions... Had the yacht been designed with automatic closures that close the venting systems when the vanishing angle was reached, we probably wouldn't be discussing this really tragic event.

Hi there, Rick/Recaldo (the chef) was a friend. I just want to say 'Thank You" in your coverage of this specific issue.Your balance, diplomacy and adherence to facts without sensationalism brings a lot of peace in wanting to understand what may have truly happened. Sadly the vast majority of channels that have attempted to cover this issue get caught up in the allure of 'likes' which appears to drive unhelpful sensationalism, outrageous speculation and making an all round general circus of what is seriously a very tragic event for all involved. I recall seeing somewhere that the British maritime authority will do their own investigation including modelling, as the vessel was flagged there, which gives them jurisdiction to do so. I hope that is the case because it seems TISG and Italian media have been unnecessarily premature and aggressive in many of their actions. I was contacted by someone claiming to want to make a doco, but declined as I'd read of others being contacted only to have their words twisted or to realise that the interviewers weren't really interested in facts... So, FWIW, Thanks again for the rarity of good honest reliable reporting.
Thank you for your words, it’s appreciated. Our condolences. Our goal is always to find the facts of any incident. Speaking as someone with significant experience in sailing yachts a 42.7 degree down flood angle is frankly terrifying. Obviously the low side dampers must be closed when under sail but that means you have to be prepared to open them when maneuvering the boat under sail while closing the other set as you settle onto a new tack. Thats potentially fraught with disaster and what if something goes wrong and a gust of wind knocks the boat down on the wrong side? Or as we just saw with this yacht a sudden storm catches you at anchor? Because at anchor you can’t predict which side of the boat you might get heeled over onto. Based on what we know right now it seems highly likely that the storm knocked the boat down beyond the angle at which downflooding would start resulting in rapid flooding, a further loss of stability and the ultimate loss of the yacht. If so this isn’t at all an accident the crew could have prevented it’s a design flaw.
I'm glad you told us you're taking a break. Otherwise we'd suspect The Italian Sea Group was having you silenced!
