My mum and dad split up in 1981. In 1984 I was 8. It was just me and my dad, a very hard working and underpaid local journalist. I can remember pulling the record out of the sleeve, putting it on the turntable, brushing the needle with my middle finger and planting it straight onto the third groove along Side One, make sure it’s side one. This particular time I’d finished the hoovering and I believe in you was playing. The line: “and I, I walk out on my own, a thousand miles from home, but I don’t feel alone” just wiped me out and reduced me to tears. Then I heard my dads’ key opening the front door. He saw that clean floors, me crying, and the song playing. He didn’t need to ask what was wrong.

I first heard this song performed by fellow Irish gal, Sinead O’Connor! It was not too long after becoming a true believing Christian! I immediately connected the words to my belief in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour ! Then I found out that Bob Dylan actually wrote this song when he was converted and that was the icing on the cake for me!! I absolutely love Sinead O’Connor’s rendition of this song. Perhaps because I can relate to many of her adverse childhood experiences, as well as her painful experiences that she lived through her adult life.
