    Wow! You really don’t know what you don’t know! Thanks, Margaret! This is, perhaps, one of the most useful crochet tips I have ever seen! Now I am invincible! :)

    This video is definitely something I will save. You explain it all so well and I make SO MANY beanies that this is information I ready needed. That slanted seam has always bugged me. Thank you, Margaret & it really made me happy to see your notification come up on my phone. I can always depend on very valuable lessons from you plus I think you are awesome. ♥️

    Your explanation was great! Thanks for the instructions. They were very clear. I always felt as though alternating where I put the first stitch of the round was cheating. Now I can use the technique with a clear conscience. 😉

      If you ever watch any of my other tutorials, you'll hear me say, "There are no rules in crochet" ergo, there are no rules to break/no way to cheat! Who says you're not allowed to find a better way to do something?! This is your hobby, so make it fun!

    Thank you so much for this amazing video Margaret!!! I’m 52 years old and my grandmother taught me to crochet when I was 12. Very simple stitch’s single crochet and double crochet, I made blankets. Now as a grandmother I’ve decided to take up crocheting again. I making simple gifts for my grandson‘s first grade teachers for Valentines baskets. I stumbled across your video and you, yes YOU have opened my eyes to a whole new crocheting world 🌍. I love how you teach and explain things so that a beginner like myself can follow along so easily. That’s not to say that I didn’t save this to my favorite tips and tricks, because I could never remember this lol. I will now begin to binge watch all your videos LOL 😂. Again thank you so much!!! 😊💚😊💚

      What a lovely compliment, Carol! Thank you! My Crafting Goals for 2021 include making more tutorials. As a former teacher, it seems like a natural fit to combine love for education with my hobby. Ha! I'm so glad to know your learning style is a match with my teaching style!

      Of course I respond to my comments! I'm so honored that you spent 30ish minutes of your valuable time listening to what I have to say! Besides, the interaction is the best part! Without it, I may as well stand in front of my mirror and ramble on to myself! Ha!

  • @denisehoffmann5006
    @denisehoffmann5006 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I almost exclusively use the continuous method . I usually put a stitch marker where the row would join incase I need a specific count.
    I am going to save this for when I absolutely can't eliminate the join .
    I like the way you break things down , thank you 😊

    I was able to follow until the very end 🤪😊. The alternating “partners” concept is new to me & confusing. Hopefully, if I watch a few more times (many more- lol), it’ll make sense💐💕

    • @margaret.olander
      @margaret.olander  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You know, Roblyn...you're not alone! The concept of the join IN GENERAL is never explained much less alternating the partners to straighten the seam! I'm not sure why that is. (In truth, the "partner" term is totally coming from my little head so if you watch someone else's video about straightening the seam, they often assume you know all about the join and won't even mention the fact that it contains 2 parts. My first few years of crocheting, I was oblivious to the idea of "unification" at the join so I often messed up my stitch count and had no idea why!) Anyhow... let's try a different thought pattern for straightening that seam... How about "Row 1: *start in the first proper double crochet* and _end in the Right Partner_ . Row 2: *start in the Left Partner* and _end on the last proper double crochet_ ."

    Thank you for these tips on crocheting seams of a hat, saved and will be trying your method right along with this tutorial. When crocheting in the round I never do a chain three to start, example if if you do 12 double crochet I always chain one then double crochet come back around and join into my first stitch. Hides the seam but still has a slant to it.
    Will be doing this tomorrow with you. Again thank you!

    • @margaret.olander
      @margaret.olander  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What you're doing is a modified version of that "hidden chain 2" I showed. Generally, I find that it works best to chain 1 less than the general suggestion. For ex: we typically use a Chain 3 to stand in for a double crochet so use a filler that's one less so your first proper DC doesn't lean so much. But if you're working with HDC, then use a filler that's only 1 chain rather than it's usual 2-chain substitute. (For SC, I also use 1 chain because it doesn't affect the height.) BUT... there are no rules in crochet so do what YOU like best! 👍

    Margaret I'm sure I asked you in a previous video about how to make a straight join and you said you usually crochet in the round. Really appreciate this video and you make it all look so easy......now let's see if I can do it! Lol Thank you so much!

      I DO usually crochet in continuous rounds as I showed with the purple hat at the beginning of this video. But there's no way I could have replied with a written explanation of how to make a straight join so here's your explanation!

    Excellent tutorial! When I first learned to crochet, that join was confusing! There is an improved method for the standing double crochet. After twirling, you go into the stitch, then complete the same way as you showed.

    • @margaret.olander
      @margaret.olander  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you land yes, I’ve seen Tamera of Moogly blog do “an improved method” but when addressing beginners it’s always best to start with a more basic version.

    Thank you for your video, I have watched it a dozen times and still have so many questions that I am hoping you can address in further videos. I am an intermediate crocheter and have been asked to produce piles of beanies in SC. HDC and DC in top down and bottom up. I have tried to make so many and that seam is so hideous no matter what I try. In your video I like the yellow beanie, filler stitch. Do you pull the slst tight? Also, I am completely lost on the last part of your video where you use the first partner and second partner. You are pointing with your crochet hook to stitch below.
    Please do a video visual on exactly what you mean by first and second partner and will it keep the stitch count correct?
    I really loath that seam and I do realize that there are different methods depending on what stitches are used. Would it better to just spiral the beanie?

    I often use the standing double crochet, one thing I do differently is that after I pull up a loop, do the gymnastics, I work it into the first stitch rather than on top of it.
