@johnjohnnston3498 Correct, that's not something that anyone missed. It is the precise message of the movie, in showing how the cycle of violence continues with no one really knowing or caring who cast the first stone. The movie ends this way intentionally with Danny's death because it leaves the door open for Derek to likely go right back to his hateful ways and thus the cycle continues. It's a very bleak but real and raw look at radical racial tensions. As much as we all want to hope and believe Derek will go on being a better man, the reality of life is that sadly, that outcome is highly doubtful, and he will likely continue the cycle of hate. The lesson in all of this is, had EITHER side shown the other just a little more compassion or stopped to talk and listen to each other instead of blindly hating each other, then none of these meaningless deaths would have ever happened.
I took it as a Parallel to Derek with the story untold. How no matter the culture, you can get swept up in dangerous ideology and the black shooter at the end was another lost soul much like Derek or his brother were. The never ending cycle.
I saw this joint back in the 90s and it's still one of my favorite movies. Y'all gave a great reaction to it. Not a lot of stupid commentary, no stupid long intro. Very well done.

It only takes one person to change your life. I was getting in trouble when I was 17, had to go to court and to the judge's chambers to speak in private. I was being disrespectful, he broke it down for me, said he holds my life in the palm of his hand and that if I wanted any chance at a life I had better get it together and start showing respect. It hit me that he was telling the truth, so I listened. Took me many years to realize the impact that had on me, but I did change right then. Proud to say that after that day, I served my country in the USAF, was an x-ray tech for 15 years, and was married for 23 years and raised 2 wonderful children and never got in trouble again. I do not know the judge's name, but I am forever grateful for him caring about my life.

The guy who plays Cameron also plays The Warden in Prison Break. The message of this film is timeless as it is a constant reminder of how throughout history we humans are predisposed to conflict and the cycle of revenge, an eye for an eye never ends. Everything Derek Vinyard did led to the culmination of his brothers demise and he will have to live with that for his entire life. The irony of this film is that the way Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton) thinks at the start of this movie, is exactly how the mind of many people from the black community operate in current times of America. It's a neverending blame game, where no one want's accountability or be responsible for their own life, choices and circumstances. Racism is racism no matter wich side of the spectrum one happen to land on. The biggest problem of american people is that they view everything through the lens of race, instead of just seeing people for the individuals they are. This is what Derek Vinyard realized in prison working with the black guy in the laundry rooms of the prison.
I teach sociology. I love showing this movie on racial hate. I ask this question to my students at the end of the movie. He became racist because of violence to his father. By black people. Then, he became reformed. Because of a black man saving him in prison. At the end of the movie, another violent act happens to him. Does he fall back into hate towards black people? My question is, does he go back to being hateful? Really deep question. If your really being for real. many black people teach there own black kids to hate whites. They do not see there own hypocrisy.
I enjoyed this so much. You two having poignant discussions about real life. I appreciate this so much; so many problems could be solved with simple discussion and understanding. Bless both of you. ❤❤
In the 1980s and 1990s…this is the kind of racist we dealt with, even in Illinois we had Matt Hale marching down Main Street and having meetings in the Public Library, 1990s White Pride and Black Pride and La Raza were still prevalent and ran most Max security prisons in the country.
the killing at the end of the movie is supposed to be senseless, it shows the cycle of young kids who are angry and kill for reasons they don't even know
I knew people like that, I still know them but they have changed. One of my best friends was extremely racist but changed when he started to work with all kinds of people. He use to wear combat boots and the usual stuff. Skinheads actually originate from UK and were very anti-racist. It also became a culture in the USA but racists took over the skinhead as most people know it now. There are original skinheads still around, like the guy that was cut in Portland, Oregon. He is a skinhead and during a fight against a racist in a tram, he was cut in the throat and almost died.
"Did he switch up tho? I hope so!" See, this is the greatest part of this film. No matter who you are, no matter what your race, no matter what your background, we can all relate to Norton's character. Not because of who he was, but who we hope he CAN be. We all want the best in the people we believe have an honest desire to be better.
This movie is a historical representation of the white American gang experience with the growing colored gang experience. I’m from nor cal where the black panthers originated and this shit is real all over the world now with drill music. We can all see what happens when you push shit too far and generational trauma gets expressed.
The Black Panthers were not a hate group or a gang. Please do not spread this misinformation to young people. You may not be doing that but it’s the way you mentioned them in association with these other groups. The Panthers started the hot breakfast program in our communities to feed children who weren’t being fed. They did many things for the betterment of our people.
@ they also stood firmly against the NRA and segregation, but the fact is the FBI has them listed as such and murdered their leadership over it. We cannot discredit the idea of street fraternities when The Boy Scouts of America should be labeled the same way
The kid in the bathroom at the end didn't just kill him for blowing smoke in his face. That kid was in a gang. The same gang that his big brother Derek humiliated on the Basketball court and killed two of their homies. They handed a gun to foolish youngster trying to prove himself to take out Derek's little brother for payback. Derek's anger and hatred was finally repaid back to him. Now he can truly see what its like to be on the receiving end. An eye for an eye.
what i like that not many people see is the similarities of derrek and the boy that shot danny. 2 young men with older people who planted ideas into their head. for derrek it was his father that planted it but cameron was the one that made it in to actuality. for the other guy im sure the guys he was with in the car were saying some of the same stuff that cameron was but with just different words. you see how ideas impact others for good or for bad.
also funny seeing them hope the black guys would win at basketball.... those biases are deep. this film does a brilliant job of showing you how wrong it is to believe that people who look like you are better than others
Y’all said it was just from blowing smoke in his face - no earlier in the movie it goes all the way to the basket ball courts when they won against them. There was a part where that was homies brother . So there was a history not just the smoke in the face
Nobody is ever ready for this movie. Its always a gut punch that is why its so important our younger generations see this movie. There was supposed to be another scene but the actor refused todo it. Norton and the Director went rounds and ended up not liking each other much after words...The FInal scene is supposed to be Edward Nortons Character standing in front of a mirror in a bathroom shaving his head bald once again.....meaning the cycle just continues....WE HAVE TO STOP THIS!! We have to learn to get along or the cycle is just going to continue.
The guy who shot Danny had someone brainwashing him also. You see him earlier in the movie and an older guy is talking to him and he is looking at Danny. Basically its the same exact story on both sides, kids getting turned violent and angry because their role models are manipulating them.
Im so happy that you two watched this film. It's one of my favorites. It's heartbreaking. This movie should be a high school requirement. We have GOT to learn to love each other and stop blaming each other for our problems. Ed Norton killed it in this film. And it was great seeing you guys react to it. Good job.
Not sure you guys noticed, but the black kid was also in a gang and had "old heads" or another Camron telling him what to do... probably told them about some kid blowing smoke in his face and they told him what he had to do about it... so it was like everyone in a similar situation.
*EVERY RACE HAS BAD PEOPLE.* I’m sick of people saying that black people can’t be racist. They can. I’m mixed and most hate is from black people because I’m not a “real” brother because I’m half white. I’m sick of the media calling White people racist for loving their own race, country and people. Black people are celebrated for loving their own people and even when they’re racist towards white people they receive barely any backlash. I’m mixed but I wish I wasn’t. It’s better to just be fully White or fully Black. Race mixing is bad in all honesty. It’s hard to find yourself.
Nah man, mixing isn't bad, the way people treat you is bad, but not everyone is like that. You stay strong, be a good person, and surround yourself with people who love you for who you are. Sorry if I sound preachy, but if you feel good about yourself, you'll find your people.
@@tiagoduarte4225 No. It’s disgusting especially in todays world. This fetishisation and self hatred propaganda is vile. Look at Hollywood, Netflix, adult content, tv advertisements etc it’s all getting whites to hate themselves and to fetishise others. It’s disgusting. Even the imagery. Most ads show white women with black/Arab men. They are intentionally trying to erase white men and push race mixing agendas and it’s disgusting. Seriously look at all white countries and the majority of ads intentionally show fake families of white women with a black/brown partner. This race fetishisation and mixing agendas are disgusting. If the majority of ads in Africa showed black women with white men then they would be called racist and it would be called out. This forced imagery and fetishisation is disgusting. I am who I am. But because of genuine love. 100% of race mixing in history was due to colonisation and conquering. It’s unnatural and everyone knows it up until the 80’s when a certain group started pushing all of this propaganda.
Black people can’t be racist but they sure can be prejudice! In order to be racist you have to have the ability to prevent other races from moving into certain neighborhoods, schools, getting bank loans, getting jobs, and joining clubs due to their race! So whenever Black people are able to do any of that then you can say Blacks can be racist! Name one event where a Black person has stopped any other races from doing any of the things I just listed! Being racist is a power construct. Systematic racism is what AmeriKKKa was built on!💯✊🏽💪🏽👊🏽
It's funny man, I have this memory burned into my head. I grew up in a mostly white suburb. But the 1st kid I became friends with in Kindergarten was one of the few black kids in our school (He was half black and half white). And this was in the mid 80's. We became fast friends because we were both good at sports. I don't think either one of us ever thought about race. Anyways, the thing I always remember is when we were Seniors in high school. Our football team was undefeated. I was the qb and he was the runningback. We were playing a team that was mostly black kids and they jumped out to an early 10 point lead on us after my friend fumbled the ball away. I will never forget the way the other team was taunting him. They were calling him an oreo pxxxxy and a dark skinned white boy. That is one of the only times I ever seen my friend look truly upset by something someone said to him. Unfortunately, for the other team, this set him off and he ended up going for like 200 yds and 4 td's, which lead to a comfortable win for us. I think this current attitude that is being tolerated in society is kinda sad. These soy white people are virtue signaling and calling everyone racist, while dismissing or even encouraging other races of ppl that they are entitled to be racist. Like there is some kind of racism tab that needs to be paid. It's nonsense. And these media outlets allowing race hustlers on tv to promote racial separatism. They are eager to undo all the progress that was made over the course of decades and claiming that it is somehow empowering.
I think the one thing you guys missed with Derek near the beginning of the film and what spiralled him into all of that hatred. Was his father was a firefighter, went into a black neighbourhood to help people and was killed by gang bangers. The anger and resentment that built up in Derek for his father trying to help people and was killed for it is what filled them up with all of that hatred. I don’t think you guys picked up on that.
I watched it a thousand times, I never heard that he was related. I think just a random lost kid that found a gang to join, not any relations to the other guy.
@@Scotty_Does_Know They were definitely part of the same group, perhaps not brothers. That kid was part of the group that was driving by the house when Derek got out of prison, scoping it out. You can see at the end Derek recognized the car, and knew they dropped the kid off at school, which made him uncomfortable, and that's why he whent back.
I wanna add...the dinner table scene toward the end where you meet his dad. Its not really "hate" coming from his dad but it's a simple seed of prejudice being planted. The anger caused by losing his dad made it easier for the Cameron character to prey on that anger and turn it to hate.

The story I heard about the ending of Danny Vinyard being shot and killed. The shooter is prospect Crip gang member Little Henry (played by Jason Bose Smith) . He is the little brother of Lamont (the Crip played by Antonio David Lyons) that Derek Vinyard curb stomped in the beginning. From what I've read, the shooting of Danny was initiated by the Crips and as Little Henry's initiation to the Crips and as a plot to get revenge on the Vinyard Family for the killing of Little Henry's brother Lawrence. In an early draft in the film, Little Henry seemed to be hesitant to kill Danny, who tried to take the gun from Little Henry, but he then shoots him.
Blood in the beginning of the movie when the kid blew smoke in his face; "Nah, he wouldn't. That's a fight" Then when the kid gets killed "Just cause he blew smoke in his face?" lol.
@20:30 in the state of California you're not allowed to shoot anyone over property example: breaking into your car.
@johnjohnnston3498 what robbery.....and what enough to create that anger? I'm just working with you
I took it as a Parallel to Derek with the story untold. How no matter the culture, you can get swept up in dangerous ideology and the black shooter at the end was another lost soul much like Derek or his brother were. The never ending cycle.
It was not revenge, it was because he was White and proud.
Going to prison was that reality check for life for him. He found out his closest friend was the one he hated the most.
I saw this joint back in the 90s and it's still one of my favorite movies. Y'all gave a great reaction to it. Not a lot of stupid commentary, no stupid long intro. Very well done.
The original ending, Derek runs home, pulls out a set of clippers and starts shaving his head while the color of the screen turns back to black and white.
Edward Norton refused to shoot that scene......
So he became a neo again?
sometimes the directors vision is wrong
@@A2Z83 tt's not the directors vision. It was part of the book.

Glad they didn't go that route. It would have destroyed Derek's outstanding growth of character.
at school in film class the 4 movies we watched and dissected were V for Vendetta, Fight Club, Apocalypse Now and American History X. this film is amazing the themes still are relevant (sadly)
I think they should add some movies to that list
Damn that was a good class. Those movies are all solid.
V for Vendetta is one of my favorite movies, still emotionally powerful every rewatch
Every kid in high school should watch this movie.

Oh man, you guys, I am so glad you guys made it to this movie. So many people need to watch this movie, I’ve been trying to get reactors to watch this movie ever since I started watching reaction videos, which has been about seven years now. It is the last gym and for some reason when I mention this movie to people it’s like they never even heard of it. Good work great reaction.
This movie is incredible! It should be required viewing for everyone in their late teens - early twenties.
Edward Norton was amazing in this.
Danny paid for his brothers mistakes. Derick paid the price.
Out of 16 books Derrick read that semester, only one was about black people, and pops was like "see, right there, that's too many".
This movie shows that no matter what race, creed, color or religion you are…human beings at the end of the day really want the same things for themselves & their families. We’re all so much more alike than we like to give credit for
Idk bout that
this movie is terribly underrated. One of Edward Norton’s best films
Terrible in general really disturbing
It’s one that’s timeliness in my opinion. The dinner scene is by far top tier acting
Can’t get charged twice for the same exact crime it’s called double jeopardy
Saw it over 20 years ago and American History X remained in my top 10 movies of all time
It only takes one person to change your life.
Ya'll going crazy with these reviews. Good stuff. Don't think there are many other channels this consistent with this caliber of movies. Keep it up!
Definitely in my Top 10. Yall should check out blood in blood out / 187 / American me / dangerous minds and freedom fighters. Feel like yall would like those
22:52 the trial is iver and done with. Because of double jeopardy laws. He cant be retried.. so hes safe to out it in his report... Also his principal is the only one gonna read it... So hes good... At that ooint its just a personal issue if he wants to share that info...
You beat me to it. It's like OJ Simpson's book. The only thing anyone could ever do is a civil case by the family of the victims.
I really like your reaction, you guys really were paying atention to the movie. I totally subscribe!
My favorite reactors of all time y’all stay dropping 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 this movie was a classic!!! I love y’all so much!!!
Cam is Stacy keach. The cop in a lot of Cheech and chong movies.
The guy with the scar on his lip is the cop in Cheech and Chong Up In Smoke
That's f'ing vodka, man!
Hey guys, my first time seeing one of your videos and I was very impressed with your insights, great reaction.
35:36 Dang. Thought that was elon musk for a minute doing NOT a nazi salute
Please!!! Watch Sleepers with Brad Pitt, Kevin bacon, Robert De Niro. Definitely have to see that during yall journey
"Did he switch up tho? I hope so!"
See, this is the greatest part of this film.
@@Kim-427he isn't lying, they did spiral down the path of hate towards "the white man." Take your blinders off.
The boy who shot the younger brother was the brother of the one who was killed during the robbery.
In the original cut of this movie the ending scene is Derek shaving his head again.
There is no actual proof about that rumor.
One of the best American movies of all time - The redemption arc of Ed Norton's character is incredible.

Every child deserves a teacher like Sweeney. Sadly there isn’t enough teachers with a passion like that.
Not sure you guys noticed, but the black kid was also in a gang and had "old heads" or another Camron telling him what to do... probably told them about some kid blowing smoke in his face and they told him what he had to do about it... so it was like everyone in a similar situation.
One of the greatest movies ever made. The message in it is so strong!
You are who you are. Embrace your mixed race and preach ❤️
"Has anything you've done made your life better?"
Is such an armor-piercing question in that moment.
The kid shot danny because his brother was the one Derrick curb stomped
I watched it a thousand times, I never heard that he was related. I think just a random lost kid that found a gang to join, not any relations to the other guy.
where does it say that?
They were crips
@@Scotty_Does_Know They were definitely part of the same group, perhaps not brothers. That kid was part of the group that was driving by the house when Derek got out of prison, scoping it out. You can see at the end Derek recognized the car, and knew they dropped the kid off at school, which made him uncomfortable, and that's why he whent back.
It's not confirmed anywhere but it sounds nice so just pretended what he's saying is real

Edward Norton just gave a phenomenal performance in this movie. The look on his face when the cops show up is haunting.
However if they were breaking into your house, the castle doctrine is relevant here. In a ccw class they go over what is justified, derek would've been locked up regardless but on different charges irl.
The curb stomp scene lives rent free in my head on a regular basis. I might actually pay it rent at this point.
