Say what you will about those prequels but the world building and what they brought to the star wars cannon is unmistakably tight as shit! Now compared to the sequel trilogy the difference is night and day.

It didn't "finally" end with Rise of Skywalker, it ended with Return of the Jedi. There were no hanging plot points at the end of Return of the Jedi. The prequels, for all the flaws, were establishing how we got to the situations of "A New Hope" and did so in a full circle 3 part arc. The Force Awakens (which I enjoyed) essentially pulled the Skywalker legacy out of it's grave (where it was resting in happy peace) and forced it back to life like a Frankenstein monster assembling parts of past Star Wars success onto a young cast. And initially it was like "it's alive, yes". But in the end you see the horror you've created in the world.
This trilogy should have centered around Finn, or have it at least be one of the main stories. I was actually intrigued about the idea of a former stormtrooper being the main hero of the saga.

Based on all the reviews that I have read and seen, maybe they need to retitle this movie to "Star Wars: Rise of An Apology For The Last Jedi", or "Star Wars: Rise of Fan Service", or my personal favorite "Star Wars: Rise of Mediocrity"
This us what happens when you dont have a plan. Jj was too safe that he mostly recycled what came before. Disney overcorrected and let Rian Johnson be too experimental. Then JJ came back and tried to cramp 3 movies worth of plot into one.
This is what happens when Kennedy, Abrams, and Emperor Iger want to alter everything the original trilogy did to fit their elitis, centralistic, progressive narrative. It wasn't til Sony pissed on Harold Ramis' grave (and Dan Akroyd's vodka) that they and other studios began using their Feig Folly playbook: Sham hard, Shill Hard
I echo what many others here have said, Finn should have been the protagonist. I liked TFA but my parents, who thought that the third act was too much of a retread, and I both agreed that the idea of a reformed bad guy was a great concept. We had the original trilogy, which was about a young idealist fulfilling his potential despite circumstances and his own father pulling him towards evil. We had the prequels, which was (in concept, at least) about how a similar gifted young man out of slavery could be corrupted. The struggles of a man who was dragged into an evil empire and has to fight his conscience and upbringing is the last logical step.
@Azmon Rougier What about it? A female Jedi works too. The issue is that they couldn't decide on WHY she was important. I get the feeling that Rian Johnson turned her backstory on its head because he was basically dealt nothing to work with other than 'mysterious orphan', one of the most played out tropes in fantasy.
With this final film, it’s safe to say that this whole trilogy is pointless. As bad as the prequels are, they at the very least had good ideas and created interesting and lasting elements that are still loved today. The Rise of Skywalker just sounds like lazy pandering that is designed to course correct from The Last Jedi. The Force Awakens was all retread and setup. The Last Jedi ignored that setup and didn’t move the plot at all while pretending to be new. This means that The Rise of Skywalker had to create, build, and conclude a trilogy’s worth of story in one film. That’s a tall order. This is probably why so many people said that this was filled with exposition and felt crammed. The most important thing this new trilogy did was kill off Han, Luke, and Leia, which sucks since those three characters added little to nothing to the story. And I hate that they are marketing this as a conclusion to a nine film saga. It’s not. It’s the conclusion to this current trilogy that they decided to pretend is a nine film story in order to lazily make this trilogy feel more important. Star Wars has so much potential, and this is what they did with it. Such a waste.
I've seen the prequels multiple times and I hate the 2nd one but I've seen it more than once this new trilogy after leaving the theater I never saw again and never will what's the point.
Agree with this trilogy being pointless. I disagree with the prequels having good ideas that have stand the test of time. Lets not start giving them a pass just because this new trilogy was a total shit show. It's like like how some people think now that George W was a good president because we've been having to put up with that orangutan at the oval office.
Kory and Martin need to make another video discussing WHY the writer of Justice League and BvS was chosen to write Rise of Skywalker. PLEASE WE NEED THIS
@surfitlive I consider Chris Terrio to be the ultimate franchise killer. I mean, yes, Argo was good. But after BvS and JL, why in the hell would you think this dude would help save Star Wars? They may as well have had Nicholas Cage play Palpatine.
It's sad how they portrayed Fin. I thought he was going to have a better role in the series. And it's unfortunate to see they are still not utilizing him in the best way.
How is he giving the fans what they wanted? Having Palpatine alive completely and utterly makes the entire saga pointless. Also he ruins the lore by making up contrived force powers and other stupid crap like light speed skipping. It's GARBAGE. I assure you people who wanted a real Star Wars film didn't want this shit. So critics need to stop proclaiming that RoS is giving the fans what they wanted.
A living Palpatine was already part of the old Exanded Universe Canon. Ironically that same Canon was declared invalid by Disney post-purchase, but here they are now, dragging it right back up out of the scrapyard.
@@Cyromantik Film canon is the only thing that should matter. The rest is fan fiction written by people other than George Lucas. But atleast EU was written by actual story writers. Disney making films without a plan and written by directors is absolute stupidity. What were they thinking?
@@TheRevolucas facts. They shouldn't have abandoned the EU, they should have kept the good stuff that came out of it or just change some stuff that wasn't that great.
@@TheRevolucas agree. You have an entire team that keeps Canon straight and you don't ask them to outline an overarching story for you? That is just silly.
This was foreseeable. I don’t really like Abrams’ as a director but he was given an impossible hand because Johnson killed almost all narrative threads because he didn’t think about how someone else would have to clean up his mess. So Abrams had to set up the third film in order to make the third film.
Seems to me if you're making a trilogy you should plan it out a little, that way you don't have 1 of the films going in a different direction to the other 2. It's essentially cinematic whiplash going in different directions in every film.
@@grimmcrag8715 yeah, I would expect this type of shit from Sony or DC/WB, but I still don't understand how Disney made such rookie mistake with one of its most expensive acquisitions. This trilogy has to be the most costly game of Chinese Whispers in human history.
Here's a quote from Rian Johnson recently. "I think approaching any creative process with [the purpose of making fandoms happy] would be a mistake that would lead to probably the exact opposite result. Even my experience as a fan, you know, if I’m coming into something, even if it’s something that I think I want, if I see exactly what I think I want on the screen, it’s like, ‘Oh, okay.’ It might make me smile and make me feel neutral about the thing and I won’t really think about it afterwards, but that’s not really going to satisfy me. What I’m aiming for every time I sit down in a theater is to have the experience [I had] with Empire Strikes Back, something that’s emotionally resonant and feels like it connects up and makes sense and really gets to the heart of what this thing is and in a way that I never could have seen coming. I want to be shocked, I want to be surprised, I want to be thrown off-guard, I want to have things recontextualized, I want to be challenged as a fan when I sit down in the theater." Say what you will about The Last Jedi, but I feel that Corey and Martin are on the same page as this statement. He might not have hit a home run for everyone... but goddamn do I think he understands what a fandom needs.
The problem with this logic is, things have done exactly that trying to please fans and actually worked. Hell this year for games we had dmc5 which was just fanservice and its a beloved game. Its more these star wars movies dont know how to please fans
The problem with The Last Jedi is that it didn't make sense and was sloppy. Plus elements that were created in The Force Awakens were just dropped or mishandled. I'm fine with tweaking things and changing up the status quo, but The Last Jedi didn't do that well at all imo
@@ethans2647 I kind of wonder if Johnson had a good story planned but was just pressured into following Empire Strikes Back. There are a lot of Empire's story beats at every stage of the film. I can't help thinking that he sort of cracked under the pressure of wanting to tell his own surprising 'let's take this new places' story but kept being asked by Disney that, "Oh, you've got to have a Hoth evacuation. And you've got to have an on-the-run plot. And you've got to have Yoda in it." And so he fell between two stools.
With Darth Maul, they brought him back, yeah. But they actually did some interesting things with him. An entire season building his character back up in Clone Wars, an entire arc in which he's heavily involved in the Rebels show. They at least made his bringing back worthwhile, despite how questionable it was at the start.
Korey Martin, I respect your opinions too much to ever give you guys any shit. I'm sad to hear that this movie is sub par, especially for a Star Wars movie. And everything you guys said was right, there is so much more they could have done with it, and they just ... dropped the ball. I don't know, it feels like Star Wars isn't being made for the fans, it feels like it's being put out to make a quick buck.
Daniel Silva Yeah but she has been increasingly more sidelined in favor of Marvel filmmakers and writers, she’s going to probably leave within 1-2 more years.
The one positive I feel we can all agree on for this movie....John Williams music. As for the movie itself, it's not bad but it's not great either. It's just sort of there
I always revisit this every once in a while and 5 years later and the franchise still can’t get off the ground. Every step forward (Andor, Mando season 1-2) is met with several back and sideways (Acolyte, Obiwan, Boba Fett)
George Lucas was the winner in the end. He sold Star Wars and made a ton of money that Disney hasn’t been able to turn over as profit. And now probably within a year or two George Lucas will be asked to come in as a stay in producer. Calling it now.
Rodney Avery Yeah on sharply diminishing returns. To the point that Solo lost anywhere between 50-200 million, Merchandising isn’t selling, and Galaxy’s Edge has been costing them billions.
@@esyphillis101 Kind of amuses me as Lucas is such a legendary businessman. If I were buying anything off him I'd be, "This looks great! Can't wait to... no... wait a minute... why are you selling me this.... what do you know that I don't?" And he'd be there, chuckling into his salad.
There have literally been 2 great Star Wars movies and the rest are average to mediocre at best . Once people accept that maybe the fighting will end. The only thing that could save Star Wars is to move away from the skywalker timeline. Until then it will be the same old same old
agreed. i think i stopped consider myself a star wars fan once the number of bad/meh movies exceeded the ones i liked (so shortly after episode 2 i reckon). i'd still say 'hope' and 'empire' are perfectly fine adventure films, but that's pretty much as far as i go.
It should have stopped after '77, which was a new and innovative take on the classic formula of young peasant meets old knight and rescues princess from evil wizard. Thinking of new ideas is beyond modern writers, as demonstrated by all of the remakes that have released in the last decade and those that are coming in the next (Dune, Stargate, and Escape from New York, for example).
There are some decent books and really good games too but...all of them have a coherent creative vision and a willingness to move away from the Skywalker/Empire trap the films are stagnating in. One thing I will say is that these new movies have given me a new appreciation for the prequels. Those movies were awfully written with terrible dialogue and uneven acting...but I now know I'll take a thoroughly planned trainwreck from a single creator over whatever this new trilogy was.
Let me start by saying this movie was anti climatic...there was no memorable fight scenes...the story seemed rushed...I couldnt stop thinking when I just left and even while I was watching it . I thought the phantom menace was a better movie experience...seemed like a lot of missed one liners for the first 45 min. The movie looked amazing but the rest was really just ehhh.....for that franchise it just seemed like a missed opportunity
Ironic how Abrams is the one who started this trilogy & yet he adds the final nail in the coffin, although I'm definitely not excluding Kathleen, Rian and Co.
Adam Driver starred in 2 movies about divorce this year, Marriage Story (out on Netflix now, just watch the ‘Argument’ scene) and the Rise of Skywalker (the one where it divided the Star Wars community down to its very core). One was brilliant and the other was a shit show...can you guess which is which😂
When I saw "Star Wars New Hope" when I was 13 and thought "This is the best SiFI movie I've ever seen, it's what I've always hoped for. I can't wait to see what happens next with these characters...", I never thought I would one day be ready to watch "Star Wars the Rise of Skywalker" at 55 and thinking "Thank God it's over, now maybe we can move on to other, better things in the Star Wars universe or maybe just turn the page completely..."
All the SW movies ranked from best to worst: 1.EP.5 ESB 2.EP.4 ANH 3.Rogue One 4.EP.6 ROTJ 5.EP.3 ROTS 6.EP.1 PM 7.EP.7 FA 8.Solo: SW Story 9.EP.2 AOTC 10.EP.8 TLJ 11.EP.9 TROS
Just came back from the movie and I'm pretty sure he stopped zapping as soon as it was getting reflected. It's as if rey's light saber absorbed it and started shooting back
Rian Johnson should have directed the third film or the first. Subverting the plot the way he did in TLJ was just misplaced since it wrapped up the mysteries of the series, killed off luke and snoke and left off on a note that didn’t leave much for abrams to do. If he had subverted those expectations at the start or in the end it would have actually been pretty awesome.
Rogue One was very close to greatness. Mandalorian is getting good reactions. Don't say a good Star Wars can't be done just because a few bad directors failed at it. Give Star Wars to Christopher Nolan and we'd be talking about Academy Awards nominations for Star Wars.
I rewatched TLJ last night and I'll keep saying it...it's not an overall bad movie. The Canto Bight stuff, the shoehorned "romance" between Finn and Rose were a waste (among other things), but I was reminded, as Martin mentioned, just how many new ideas it tried to introduce to this universe and I applaud Rian Johnson for that. I've seen the criticism that maybe it chickened out from those ideas by the end of the movie but I think he was trying to leave a good jumping off point going into episode 9. TLJ is far from perfect and I can't defend everything it does...but I don't have to; I was excited by the new direction it proposed. I haven't seen TROS yet but it seems like it's going to completely abandon all that and play it safe. Anyway, just wanted to say that maybe I'm in the minority but TLJ doesn't deserve as much hate as it gets. I'm sure the Internets will tell me I'm wrong tho.
Nah it rightfully so deserved that hate a lot of what went down in that movie was just bad. Luke’s whole character Leia poppins holdos dumb ass, snokes death, super Rey.rose stopping Finn from sacrificing himself, Yoda using force lighting as a ghost like plenty reasons why it’s hated
YellowTwerker No. She needs to have vulnerable. She’s less relatable than Luke. Luke was a simple kid that had flaws and struggled to learn the ways of the Force.
She does have flaws, but her main one is hubris. She's arrogant to a fault and that's much less relatable to Luke who is naive and vulnerable. We meet Rey when she's been living alone all her life and been forced to become extremely competent and she believes she can handle anything, all the while being in many ways just as naive and ignorant as Luke. Shes not a Mary Sue as so many people like to scream, but her flaws are much less palletable in a protagonist.
It isn't a film, it's a bunch of compilation scenes made to please internet fans . And if there are unanswered questions, Disney will answer them in Star Wars books next year. Wtf?
Really glad there's at least Clone Wars Season 7 on the horizon to look forward to. Plus this past episode of The Mandalorian was pretty good imo. In regards of this film, I feel like there was no way for this movie to turn out pariticularly good because of what the last movie did, and whatever the hell JJ did to retcon/ignore said TLJ. I'm gonna be seeing it this weekend though, and really I'm just glad this trilogy is done with so I can move on to other and hopefully better SW related stuff.
Playing it safe for The Force Awakens is the reason why we're here. The fear of failing doomed this trilogy to a loop of diminishing returns. If it all started with originality at the start, the pivots and retconning of the The Last Jedi wouldn't have caused so much drama.
You say that as it the last jedi did anything with the characters to say that. Finn was denounced, rey was made for kylo. And I dont care about poe but he was all about arrogance. The last jedi was basic and didnt do anything new
I've seen lots of "meh/ok" movies. Star Wars is way too big to be a meh movie... You spend all this money on a movie and instead of hiring some decent writers and creating a cohesive movie trilogy, you decide to focus everything on merchandising, theme rides, and spin offs.... THAT is why it rises to the level of "hate" for me. At least Lucus tried..
At least it didn't just regurgitate old content, badly. Got to give it credit for that, even if it did fall into that trap a couple of times. Honestly I don't really like any of the Disney SW movies. The first one had a decent scene or two but in the end it was just a remake of A New Hope.
Does the ending give you closure? Or as you PISSED? One thing is for sure, now, we can all move on.
I finally feel free. Really liked TLJ but I knew something was wrong with this trilogy.
as you pissed?

Star Wars has so much potential, and this is what they did with it. Such a waste.
I've seen the prequels multiple times and I hate the 2nd one but I've seen it more than once this new trilogy after leaving the theater I never saw again and never will what's the point.
Agree with this trilogy being pointless. I disagree with the prequels having good ideas that have stand the test of time. Lets not start giving them a pass just because this new trilogy was a total shit show. It's like like how some people think now that George W was a good president because we've been having to put up with that orangutan at the oval office.
obligation > inspiration is the best way to describe this trilogy, oh my gosh
Lando: Hey girl, you got them Gender Fluid?
Lmfao
wtf dude lmao! That intro is the highlight of my year. 😂😂
He has a large collection of incriminating photos of all the power players in the industry. If you have a better explanation, I'd like to hear it.
@@solidsteelcobra YOU SIR, ARE A GENIUS. You have restored sense to this mad effing universe!!!
I didn't hate this film. It just left me really confused.
Saw the review on twitch.
Same it was fun
Thanks for joining us on there:)
Fucking hilarious!
I hope that I could still watch the recorded stream there because I’m just getting sick of the F bombs getting censored here.
@@keijijohnson9754 yes you can. If just there for the review it starts at the 35 minute mark.
It's sad how they portrayed Fin. I thought he was going to have a better role in the series. And it's unfortunate to see they are still not utilizing him in the best way.
Korey is sooo cute as a cat!😍 Marvin should have done it too. He would have been adorable as the pimp cat.
@@Cyromantik Yeah and Leia being a full fledged Jedi was from the book too?
@@TheRevolucas agree. You have an entire team that keeps Canon straight and you don't ask them to outline an overarching story for you? That is just silly.
This was foreseeable. I don’t really like Abrams’ as a director but he was given an impossible hand because Johnson killed almost all narrative threads because he didn’t think about how someone else would have to clean up his mess. So Abrams had to set up the third film in order to make the third film.
Abrams movies often bore me
well it's still his fault. It was his idea to bring back the emperor and if they would not have done that, this film would have been better but no!
Perhaps they shouldn't have hired the writer of JUSTICE LEAGUE for the final entry, just saying.
I want to be shocked, I want to be surprised, I want to be thrown off-guard, I want to have things recontextualized, I want to be challenged as a fan when I sit down in the theater."
Say what you will about The Last Jedi, but I feel that Corey and Martin are on the same page as this statement.
The problem is Johnson ended the story with one movie left!
There was nowhere to go after TLJ
As a stand-alone film that would have been fine, but as a sequel that needed to set up a third movie as well, it dropped the ball.
Korey ranting in a stormtrooper suit and cat makeup is life itself.
I love the new starwars movies. Especially groot. And when star lord realized the blue guy was his daddy
Korey looks like he belongs on The Island of Dr. Moreau
CL J 😂
33:41 I’m dead “What I think, more titties. Okay Jeff, thank you.”
Why is Rey important again...?
"Going against the grain!" Korey.... have you seen the reviews? lol
Well Favreau, Felloni, and Rejwan are in charge now due to their success with Mando.
Link. I heard they are in higher places now, but KK is still in charge.
PREACH
George Lucas was the winner in the end. He sold Star Wars and made a ton of money that Disney hasn’t been able to turn over as profit. And now probably within a year or two George Lucas will be asked to come in as a stay in producer. Calling it now.
Disney brought it for 4 billion. They made that back with just the movies alone even before ep9
Hes just as bad though. He was great at first and then it came to the prequels and his ideas turned from great to jar jar binks
@@Kryos-hf2rc he made a genius move with the prequels. He knew memes will rising and now it's the most abused product which has been memed
I like many of the movies, but yes, I'm tired of the Skywalkers.
@@LARKXHIN most of all, i'm tired of the goddamn rabid fanbase.
Immediate thumbs up for that cats reveal.
The idea that fans want the same story over & over just cause they didn't like The Last Jedi seems to be the biggest strawman ever.
Dude im young and i HATE what Disney did to Star Wars.
Ironic how Abrams is the one who started this trilogy & yet he adds the final nail in the coffin, although I'm definitely not excluding Kathleen, Rian and Co.
I'm surprised he got the job in the first place after his mediocre Star Trek movies
they had no part in this one sadly can't blame them..JJ also had more money to work with...which is rather sad.
Ah.. no, Kathleen Feminazi Kennedy started this shit show. The minute Disney got her to direct star wars it was over.
As true as that is, you got to realize Rion Johnson screwed the whole trilogy up in one movie!
@@chicostephenson true on that one, I should've mentioned him as well.
Oh wow. When he gets cat angry. 🤣 I’m at work cracking up at my desk.
To hell with Star Wars, I want to see what y'all have to say about them CATS
Koreys makeup looks better than the CGI from Cats lol
Adam Driver starred in 2 movies about divorce this year, Marriage Story (out on Netflix now, just watch the ‘Argument’ scene) and the Rise of Skywalker (the one where it divided the Star Wars community down to its very core). One was brilliant and the other was a shit show...can you guess which is which😂
Marriage story? Its just a Kramer vs Kramer remake.
Nah that was Last Jedi
When I saw "Star Wars New Hope" when I was 13 and thought "This is the best SiFI movie I've ever seen, it's what I've always hoped for. I can't wait to see what happens next with these characters...", I never thought I would one day be ready to watch "Star Wars the Rise of Skywalker" at 55 and thinking "Thank God it's over, now maybe we can move on to other, better things in the Star Wars universe or maybe just turn the page completely..."
Oh lawdt, how is Korey gonna describe this?

I did the same haha
Confused Mathew would be pissed if he was still a critic...... Oh God, Plinkett has a huge amount of matirial to work with now!
Damn I'm not gonna lie, I'm just not excited at all for the last Star Wars movie and I know I'm not the only one
Star wars is more depressing than schlindlers list now
22:27 Yo you telling me my favorite concept from the last movie was abandoned 😭😥😤 Im probably not seeing this
I rewatched TLJ last night and I'll keep saying it...it's not an overall bad movie.
You ARE wrong. Travey commented and made some valid points, he wasn't even trying that hard.
Yours sincerely, Internet.
That cat outfit is hilarious. Lol
"I;m done!'
Oh dis gonna b gud...
Rogue One still has me optimistic for the future
Rey basically got a Roman Reigns push this whole time.
I can’t be emotionally invested in her character because of it
SenorTwoPhones so does she have to get cancer for you to care then
YellowTwerker No. She needs to have vulnerable.
She’s less relatable than Luke.
Luke was a simple kid that had flaws and struggled to learn the ways of the Force.
OH.....MY .....GOD
Wtf?
Who are these internet fans? Tumblr crowd? Cause this damn sure Wasn’t made for actual Star Wars fans
Disney is turning star wars movies into video games
Playing it safe for The Force Awakens is the reason why we're here. The fear of failing doomed this trilogy to a loop of diminishing returns. If it all started with originality at the start, the pivots and retconning of the The Last Jedi wouldn't have caused so much drama.
You say that as it the last jedi did anything with the characters to say that. Finn was denounced, rey was made for kylo. And I dont care about poe but he was all about arrogance. The last jedi was basic and didnt do anything new
I wish someone would make a meme of Korey saying “Frustrated”
I've seen lots of "meh/ok" movies. Star Wars is way too big to be a meh movie... You spend all this money on a movie and instead of hiring some decent writers and creating a cohesive movie trilogy, you decide to focus everything on merchandising, theme rides, and spin offs.... THAT is why it rises to the level of "hate" for me. At least Lucus tried..
Who says The Last Jedi is there favorite one is clearly trolling.
At least it didn't just regurgitate old content, badly. Got to give it credit for that, even if it did fall into that trap a couple of times. Honestly I don't really like any of the Disney SW movies. The first one had a decent scene or two but in the end it was just a remake of A New Hope.
The "humor" in this movie is terrible.
In this trilogy*
Its official now, the Clone Wars cartoon is the best star wars media by far.
Unintentional Spaceballs costume
I'm glad that you all mentioned that Kylo/Ben should have his own movie. Too bad Adam Driver is done with Star Wars.
Don't waste a good actor's time, let Adam Driver do other great projects. The man can act.
Wonder Woman: That's just a trash can

Can't believe Korey didn't tell Martin to fix his collar that whole time.
