Xbox Series X Storage - SeaGate 8tb Game Hub

  • This video is a reupload from February this year where I made my choice as far as what I think is the best and most functional storage option for the Xbox Series X, I would much rather have 8tb of storage that I can hold games on, than have 1tb of super-fast storage to play games off of. Especially considering my relatively slow internet connection, it can take hours to download a huge game, so being able to keep all my games installed and just transfer them between the two storage options makes much more sense to me, than randomly waking up some day and thinking I would like to play any given game and realizing I don't have it installed, and then losing interest in being able to play it. The 8tb Game Hub does not play Xbox Series X/S games but I believe especially with a slower internet connection that it is a valid choice for the Xbox Series X as would be pretty much any large capacity drive in this use case. With all that said I hope you enjoyed it, and as always thanks for watching, more videos coming soon. Remember to be safe and be good. -Valhallas Demise

    I have added 3 links to the description of this video (not affiliated) to 3 different drives for the Xbox, the two 8tb external drives should both work on PC as an external drive as well as both drives should work for the Xbox as an external storage drive, note, they will not allow Series X/S games to be played off the drives. They are for mass storage not Xbox Series X/S gameplay, they will allow Xbox One, 360, and original Xbox games to be played off the external drive. The SSD will allow Xbox Series X/S games to be played off the drive but is around the same price range as the other drives and only has 1tb of storage.

      @TECHNOBABBLE.  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Saying that it is not compatible with the Series X sounds like you're saying it won't work at all, and that is not the case. I also have stated in the video, the description, and the pinned comment that it will not play Xbox Series X/S games. In some rare cases games that have the X/S badge can be played off the drive as they do not require the internal storage speeds of the X/S console as you can see in my follow up video.

      @@TECHNOBABBLE. yeah it works in the sense a thumbprint would. U can store shit on it. And play old games off it. That is the sum of it. Not saying you didn't. YOUR TITLE IS MISLEADING. THAT IS THE ISSUE. PEOPLE CANNOT PLAY SERIES X GAMES WITH THAT DRIVE.

      I don't feel that the title is misleading, it is the storage that I use on the Xbox Series X. It does not say, nor do I say in the video that the storage is for Xbox Series X/S gameplay, so if people would actually be willing to watch a video, they click on instead of heading to the comments to start fights, they may understand how and why I use this storage on the Xbox Series X.

      I certainly understand how time constraints can, well, suck. It would be nice if Xbox had gone the Sony route and allowed an M.2 to be installed in the console. I tend to lean more into budget options, and landed on the SeaGate. It's especially nice (in my opinion) for people with slower internet speeds. Thanks for watching and for commenting.

    With all the backwards compatible games clogging up my library, honestly I'll always need a high capacity option, and that simply doesn't exist for SSDs unless you wanna drop roughly a grand, I'd rather put that kinda cash into games or a new TV. Might look into this

    • @TECHNOBABBLE.
      @TECHNOBABBLE.  ปีที่แล้ว

      We actually use a SeaGate external drive, the red Gears of War 4 one on my wife's Xbox One, I think it's 2tb? I also use an incredibly similar external drive on the PS4, which might end up transferred to the PS5. They are definitely good drives for the price, however when I made this upgrade, it was to just find the absolute largest drive I could find for around the price of the SeaGate X/S Expansion Card. Previously on my Xbox One, I used a Nyko hard drive enclosure which also powered from the wall, but it allowed me to choose any 3.5" drive to put in it, so I had a 4tb, which has since been put into my desktop. Anyway, point being, there aren't necessarily any "useless" options for storage, just depends on what you're looking to get out of it. Maybe someday I can get all the types of storage together and do a better job of explaining all the potential pros and cons. Thanks for watching and for commenting, also apologize if this ran on a little too long.

    Yes, if you want to store terabytes worth of old-school games remember USB hard drives do not support series X games to be installed on so I am it’s not worth it if I got a plug a USB into it and not the little special slot that’s made specifically for the high-speed SSD drives I don’t want it I’m not downgrading my series X to only support games from last generation

    👍👍 As you'll see on the comment of your follow up vid I received mine and it's excellent so far. I purchased a small surge protector that is dedicated to this unit only. It has an on off switch on it. Wondering if it would cause any issues if I switched it off while not in use ? The ambient green light doesn't bother me but keeping power going to it 24/7 or when not in use I'm not sure of. Does it need power at all times for some reason ? I wouldn't think so but I'm unsure. Any advice appreciated. Thanks again for your helpful content 👍👍.

      Thank you for your supportive comments. I don't know any reason you wouldn't be able to unplug the drive when you don't want or need to have it on. It's a hard drive so it doesn't require constant power, usually things that require power to hold onto data, have some form of battery that keeps a cache powered. Like, N64 memory cards or certain old Game Boy games. So, it should be fine to unplug it, however, I would make sure to fully power down the Xbox or other consoles, etc. before unplugging the drive. To ensure the drive isn't being accessed, as that could result in data corruption. Hopefully this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I bought one and it was working well. Downloading my games I have the Xbox one before the x/s it was working well meaning it downloaded the games and stored the games for me so that my system can have more memory. I've had it for 2 years now. It would turn off and turn on on its own when I am not using the Xbox. I had no problem with it until now because it burnt out like it won't even turn on anymore. It was making some kind of ticking sound like internally and the light started flashing and now it's not working 😢.

      why do you want to power your drive from the wall ?, we all hate wires every where, you have 3 usb ports 4+4+4 = 12 TB thats about 10 TB after format you can even remove the drive at the cable end leaving the cable in the S/X and have no risk hurting your port to place the same make drive for even more TB, I have bought many Power from wall USB drives and they all fail, Not the drive but the power brick that powers the drive up .. this for me is a very bad way to add a HD plus you need to plug it in Messy! there cheap for a reason..

    • @TECHNOBABBLE.
      @TECHNOBABBLE.  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Yorkshire Pud I also replied to your standalone comment. I have used two variations of wall powered drives; I talk about that in my other reply. Anyway, I have never had any issues with the drives power bricks failing, and I find them to be a reliable solution. So, I just gotta say, I'm confused by your choice of other complaint? I don't disagree to the wires everywhere issue, my personal "media center" is an absolute travesty of spider webbed cable mismanagement. Wouldn't four 4tb external drives dangling from the Xbox be a more cluttered mess than one extra cable to the wall? Not least that it would cost over $400 to buy four 4tb external drives new. I mean it's all about choice and what you would prefer just confused. Thanks again for the comments and apologies if I've run on too long, I just kinda enjoy the discussions.

Thank you for reply Tech let's say you plug a 4tb drive into the X/S then format for games, using the same lead (As both drives you bought are the same 4tb USB) format that second one you could remove and replace without taking the lead from the console, you could put the drive away if space is short, I still have to say that in my 60s now and having a PC since well PC were made a 386sx lol I have had trouble with using a USB with power ext brick to the unit with data lose and errors due to the power input and over time poor connection (Do you really want a power surge going straight to the HD ?), for me the plug in 4tb works best, now not taking a single step back, I do hope you have many years happy use from your unit my friend..

      @Yorkshire Pud That would make much more sense lol. Phrasing matters. But yeah, I could only visually imagine like 4 hard drives hanging off the Xbox which seems hilarious lol. Anyway, just another note, I keep all of my electronics, TV, the hard drive enclosure, etc. all of it is plugged into the wall with a GFCI or ground fault circuit interrupter. Which if working effectively is meant to trip and block any power surges from getting to anything on the other side. Thanks again for the comments and discussion.

      Faster load times, bigger games, NVME has been a standard in PCs for years now. The "memory card" was a bad call, and only sucks more because SeaGate is the only company making them. I'm fairly sure, but not 100%, that SeaGate has to pay Microsoft for the branding? If not I'm sure there's some kinda deal where Microsoft makes money off the expansion cards. Sony did it better on the PlayStation 5 having an M.2 slot under the shell and just posting specification guidelines for what kinda M.2 NVME drive to get. Thanks for watching and for commenting. The WD_Black P10 is an external HDD and is compatible in the same way as the SeaGate 8tb Game Hub is. It even says on the WD_Black website that the P10 is for "Play Xbox One games, store Xbox Series X/S games." I would like for you to watch my follow up video where I showcase some gameplay off the 8tb drive and try to explain things a bit better: th-cam.com/video/BerzPeeh80M/w-d-xo.html
      And for anyone who would like to shop around or to read the specifications and compatibility notes on the WD_Black P10, I'll link directly to the WD_Black website right here: www.westerndigital.com/products/portable-drives/wd-black-p10-game-drive-usb-3-2-hdd#WDBA3A0050BBK-WESN
      Also a note that all the SeaGate options are linked in my description and pinned comment, and none of the links are affiliated.

      Yeah, it has to be formatted as NTFS on a PC. After which according to the Xbox Support website (a quick google search got me there) you can record up to an hour of gameplay. Though, if you have a PC with ample storage I would suggest checking out a capture card. (Edit: It can't hold games and record longer videos though, I dunno why Xbox did it that way)

    • @TECHNOBABBLE.
      @TECHNOBABBLE.  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possibly, although if you just dust down the drive or use some canned air (electronics duster) or one of those electric air blowers. Which I'm sure have a more technically appropriate name. Use something to clean and blow the dust out fairly regularly and it should be fine. I have a video coming soon tearing down and cleaning out a console that stayed in a smokers room for years and years and it still works fine after cleaning it out. Anyway, point being it should survive? I'd be more worried about spilling a drink on it or something with it on my desk. (Edit: also note that the usb cable is some proprietary thing with a special end on one side. And is only about 8 inches in length)

      I have a link to the Amazon product listing in the video description you can read all of the manufacturer's information there. The listing says HDD. I've covered this drive in multiple videos. It's not the proprietary NVMe drive necessary for playing all Xbox Series X/S games, it is a hard drive and as such makes for good storage of all generations of games, and can play all Xbox 'Durango' and earlier games (Xbox 360 and original Xbox) Durango being the codename for the Xbox One. It can play a select number of X/S games that originially released for Xbox One and received upgrades after the series X/S consoles released. It will not launch newer X/S games or games that have released specifically for X/S. Hopefully this helps.

      Yep, as long as the series consoles have been on the market now, I don't believe we're going to see any other options for the NVME expansion drives, unfortunately. I haven't really researched it, but imagine we're stuck with the SeaGate 1 and 2tb options. Sony takes the win with the M.2 slot this generation, at least you have options. • @TECHNOBABBLE.
      @TECHNOBABBLE.  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the 8TB drive is compatible with all generations of Xbox One and Series consoles. I transferred all my games to it from my old original Xbox One, and just plugged it into the Series X. If I remember correctly the console will ask if you want to format it to be a video storage drive, which you do not have to do. Beyond that it should work fine to use between two consoles, just keep in mind that the 8tb Game Hub does have and require its own external power source. (Edit: Also note that Xbox Series specific games cannot be played off the game hub, I prefer this drive to the similarly priced 1tb "memory card" expansion drive just due to the sheer difference in storage amounts)

    • @TECHNOBABBLE.
      @TECHNOBABBLE.  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One final concern may be that some games will want to automatically update to their series X/S versions once stored on that console. So those games may not work if you move the drive back to the One S.

      It should work fine for that yes. Just the games that may update for Xbox Series consoles won't work on the One S. Other than that, I don't know any reason that it shouldn't work.

      No, except some rare cases you can see what I mean in my other video. You can store them, but if you're looking for expanding the internal memory and only care about a drive playing X/S games I have the SeaGate expansion card linked in the description as well. If you're ok with just storing the games and transferring them between the drive and console then the 8tb hard drive is about the same price as the 1tb SSD expansion. It's not about playing Series X/S games off the drive; I state that in the video. It's about mass storage on a budget. Which is especially convenient if you have a slower internet connection. Saves me, in my case from having to download the games again on a 25mbps connection, it's easier and faster to transfer Series X/S games off the drive than to download them, it takes minutes instead of hours. (Edit: it plays Xbox One, 360 and original Xbox games just as well as any other external would, and the Series X/S consoles only have limited options for SSDs that can actually play series X/S games)
