@@journeysamaritan I agree, embrace those kinds of resources if they're available. Sometimes people feel embarassed about that, but feeding your family is more important than your pride.
In the US many states allow people to buy vegetable plants and seeds at farmer's markets with SNAP or other benefits. That could really help a struggling family get something started. And it's helping the local farmers, too.

Since March I have been buying emergency food for long-term storage and also had everything on his list except beans, only because I hate beans, and canned sausages. I do have lots of Spam though!
Something else you may want to look into is airtight food containers, oxygen absorbers, and food grade desiccant packets to greatly extend shelf life of your dry food. Excellent video. For beginning preppers, it’s so easy to do this. Most people waste money on coffee at the coffee shops, fast food, eating out instead of making meals at home etc. I keep a journal of bills and extras. All bills go on the left side. Extras go on the right. I also have the Mint app. It tracks your purchases and you set up categories like grocery or restaurant. My first year using the journal, I was shocked at how much money I wasted. That was enough to get me to really keep track of spending. The Holy Spirit lit a fire to prep for something big coming in June 2019. I already had a side gig taking care of my elderly neighbor (she’s now 96 and lives permanently with me) all the extra money from her went straight to prepping and getting out of debt. I cleared out my master closet of everything. I took out the upper shelving and put in tall metal shelving. Then I moved all my stuff to the garage and my baby girl who was in college’s closet. By the pandemic I had a years worth of food. It took 6 months. During that 6 months I scoured through TH-cam and learned as much as I could on survival and EMP’s. I bought a solar generator. Had to use it yesterday for a planned outage. Amazing. Works fantastic. My closet when I moved Nov 2020 filled the entire food area of my basement at my new house. I had put away 4 years of food by buying bulk rice, flour and sugar and the rest I canned or bought from the store. Grew most of my vegetables. My closet was perfect. Cool, dry and dark. I put an outdoor lockable doorknob on it. I put water from Costco under all the beds. Canned food that couldn’t fit in my closet went behind the books on the bookshelves. I have over 500 books so that as a no brainer. I hid food in suitcases. Boxes in the garage that I wasn’t worried about heat. My realtor when I sold was in shock at what I’d put in that small closet. When I’d boxed all of it up and stacked it on the garage it took up 2 rows and stacked 5 feet. It had been stacked to the ceiling in that closet. I don’t want to ever be hungry with any options. I also don’t want my neighbors to be hungry. Just do something. Pray about it and God will help you. God has blessed me so much since I trusted Him and did what He asked me to do. My 96 year old neighbor will never be cold, hungry, or without medications and necessities.God has provided everything.

      @dogslobbergardens6606 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Excellent point! Salt is one thing that even if you have a full-blown homestead, it's pretty difficult to make your own.
Even if you live near an ocean, yes you can boil down seawater but that's a lot of work and energy. You can also use solar stills and things like that with seawater, but it still takes a lot of time to get a few pounds of salt.
Just stock up on extra salt, various kinds, a little at a time.

Pro tip: when you buy rice, beans, flour, sugar, oats, etc. put them in your freezer for 5-7 days to kill the bugs and larvae in that product before storing or just if you plan to use it in your daily pantry. We had flour mites in our pantry once from not doing this and it took some time, effort, and wasted food to finally get rid of them all.
I vacuum seal all these foods and store them in totes for long term and I can do this confidently after freezing them. Once they’ve been in the freezer for the 5-7 days, leave them on the counter for a day or two to get rid of any moisture from freezing and then use or package them for storage without worrying about the bugs ruining your food.
“I’d challenge you” to buy salt as well. For 58 cents you can buy a container of table salt, if you can find it, and it is super important to have on hand.
In your climate down south there, why aren’t you growing your own peanuts to make your own peanut butter? 🤣

    • @georgewocosky
      @georgewocosky 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Agree on the SALT & Peanuts - ANYTHING that is 'food waste' is great to toss to the Porkers = more MEAT ! Salt helps us hold water , it's a GO TO preservative . . . salted & smoked meats will last a good amount of time WITHOUT refrigeration - * Funny thing is that salt also pulls the moisture out of meat , if it's used as a 'rub' . . . 'dry aging ' meat is another good use ! Meats can be left in a 'tended' smoker for a VERY LONG TIME !
Homegrown , home roasted peanuts beat the heck out of 'factory made ' / corporate farmed . . . run the nuts through a grinder / blender - ** It's always gratifying to be able to say , " I made it MYSELF ! "
Food waste that doesn't go to pigs , chickens , or other farm 'critters' would be a welcomed addition to a compost pile . . . there are billions of considerations , depending on location & personal abilities .

110% correct! I have a 2yr supply of dry/frozen food on standby. Everybody thought that I was crazy until they noticed items that they couldn’t get at the store & I had them stacked in the pantry & my deep freeze. There’s a whole lot more things that they’ll need but that’s a very good start for sure. I live in Michigan. I started preparing prepping back in 2018. I’m glad that I did. I’m a retired truck driver and I started prepping right after I noticed that the government was spending money like we had a holiday cash tree …. I stocked up on all commodities. It gives you peace of mind knowing that everything will be ok even when they shut off the grid(which will happen before winter this year). Please people, if you live in the city like I do, then you need to buy candles, flashlights, solar batteries, rechargeable batteries , water or Zero water filter, barging items, generator, wood ect. Your electric company has already made it public that they’re going to shut off the grid in 30min intervals sometime this summer.

I have been preparing slowly for the last 5 years. My first investments, were freeze dryer, dehydrator, and all canning supplies. I learned how to use it all. Learned where farmers markets are to buy by the bushel to put it up at home in bulk either canned, dehydrated or freeze dried. I don't have the property to grow everything. This last year, I raised a bunch of baby chicks to have fresh eggs. I got an incubator and will hatch cotournix quail for eggs and meat. Soon I will be moving onto property with land in a different state, and will be growing everything I need (I have all the seeds I need) and possibly get a couple of milking dwarf Nigerian goats for milk. I know nothing about caring for a milk cow, so I figured milking 1 or 2 dwarf goats may be better for me to care for on a smaller scale. I learned how to grow gourmet mushrooms from store bought mushrooms and have made my own mycelium to grow an infinite amount of mushrooms for our health and for food. Raw honey...cant say enough about it. Praise the bees! Water, I have an excellent filtration that will get any water clean and several life straws and ready to drink and cook with for my family and animals and storage of water. I learned how to save rain water. The property I will be going to will have a year round stream and I will make a pond if there is no pond on it already. Get fish from a hatchery to stock the pond. whenever I have had an extra $25.00 out of my budget, I have been stocking up on mylar bags, food safe buckets and more . Been saving the lint from my dryer and have bought dollar store candles to make fire starters for fire pits and fireplaces. I have a sugar gum tree that drops thousands of their spiny balls every year, and I use them for Firestarters as well. I learned how to make my own soaps from olive oil and coconut oil...we will be clean. This year I have been stocking up on items that I can store in mylar bags, jars and buckets. My son has solar generators, solar lights, solar panels, batteries, propane, flints, matches and more. This has all been my way to get through tough times which I believe we will be going through soon. Everyone laughed at me in 2019 when I was an Extreme coupon clipper and stocked up on toilet paper, cleaning products, shampoos, wipes, canned goods, tooth brushes, toothpaste, rubbing alcohol, laundry soap and so much more for pennies. When covid hit and things were not found on shelves at all in the stores, we had them. I was able to give to my parents, my uncle, and my family...we got through that until the stores started getting inventory back.. I even had medical supplies and masks, gauze and non latex gloves in my pantry. I learned from covid lockdowns...s#*t can hit the fan in a minute. I would much rather be prepared than not to be prepared. If nothing serious happens, none of our preparing will go to waste, we will rotate our stock, use what we have and continue to be more self sufficient. Better to be prepared than not.

Another trick to store rice, beans and flour and keep the bugs away is to add laurel bay leaves to the buckets or containers. The bugs don’t like the smell and stay away. laurel bay leaves are inexpensive.

I have added a box of steramine. It has 150 tabs in a bottle and a half a tab goes into my spray bottle. I sanitize my bathroom and my kitchen with it. Can also sanitize utensils, dishes glassware, pots and pans. Also have a case of 93% rubbing alcohol. Several bottles of dawn power wash and 2 gallons of dawn liquid. With that, water and alcohol, I can make dozens of refills for the powerwash bottles. Stored water, plenty. I have a solar oven and a few solar kettles. Plus a butane burner with several cases of butane cans. I also have built a rocket stove with bricks, no mortor. Works great. I have lots of trees, so small sticks, are always around. I made hundreds of firelogs from junk mail, cardboard and newspaper this past year. This past spring, I bought portable fans that have lithium batteries in them and they charge by USB, which I plug into one of my solar generators. Stay safe.

A farmer told me two days ago that we're all living on last years' harvest. He says with the shortage of fertilizer, we'll start to notice the lack of food in Spring 2023. Ranchers can't raise animals for food without fertilizer for their pastures, fruit farmers with massive orchards tell me it now costs $2 per tree to fertilize them, and seed which should be started for fall, is all on backorder. Please add some Tang, a jar of honey, coffee or tea, maybe a can of hot cocoa or apple cider and definitely some juice if you can. Kids may need the extra nutrition. My list for my family members also includes some dry pasta and jars of spaghetti sauce with the meat in it. Chili is also great to have. Anything you can just heat and eat may make big differences. Don't forget some cans of fruit. Anything is good except for pineapple because the acidity breaks down the cans. Also, try to get 90 day supplies on any prescriptions. Hard candies or fruit snacks might be wise, too. I truly recommend anything solar where possible from lanterns to camp shower bags. When you empty bleach and laundry soap containers, fill with water and draw an X on the label. This water cannot be used for drinking but can be used for hand and dish washing as well as flushing toilets. Milk jugs can be washed out and filled with water for drinking and cooking. Store somewhere out of day light.

You hit everything on my list of everything I've already stocked. I can't eat peanuts, so I've bought soybean butter spread. Instead of the Vienna sausages, I have cans of (Aldi brand) Spam. I don't like beans as much, so I have mostly dried beans and split peas. And I buy the bottled water in the heavier gauge plastic bottles, because the plastic holds up better. There's a little less in the bottle, and it's slightly more expensive, but the bottles don't leak as quickly.
A few things you didn't mention that I have are olive oil and vegetable oil, dried yeast packets, baking soda, baking powder, corn starch, salt, seasonings, bouillon cubes, and a variety of dried fruits. I packed several pounds of wheat bran from the local health food store to add fiber. I usually cook my white rice with a generous scoop of bran stirred in.
I packed Dawn dish detergent!! I've been getting my food safe buckets free from the bakery departments at the local grocery stores. I scrub them out well with Dawn, drop a couple of dried bay leaves in the bottom, and then pack and seal them. I label the lids with what's in each bucket, because I mix assorted dry items. I pack the rice and beans with bouillon cubes and seasonings, and the flour with yeast packets. All of my dried fruits are in the same bucket.
I wanted to mention too, I've stored all of the dry foods (flour, rice, beans, oatmeal, etc.) in the freezer for 24 hours to kill any bugs, then let them come back to room temp for 24 hours before packing them in the buckets. I'm trying to keep them as safe to eat as possible!
I bought a new sink plunger today, to use with a couple of my emptied 5 gallon buckets, in case we're without power. I have everything I need to make a hand clothes washer!
Thanks for a great start up video!

The Lord led me to start slowly prepping for what was coming in 2019. Being single, it took me a little longer to get prepared. I also really upped my garden game this year and bought a deep freeze. I'm currently making vegetarian lasagna which I will package in single servings and put that in my deep freeze too. I think preparing is an actual mindset, and once you get in the mindset, it's really not that difficult. My local grocery store has a 50% off sale on spaghetti sauces, pasta and cheese, hence why I decided to make veggie lasagna and add that to my prep. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and knowledge with others :) It's astonishing that so many people still don't see what's going on and what's quickly coming our way. 4-5 tbsp powdered bullion
    (Chicken or beef)
    2 tsp onion powder
    1/2 tsp garlic powder
    2 cups rice
    1 cup thin pasta ( angel hair/vermicelli)
Break up the pasta into small pieces
Mix all ingredients well and store in a glass jar ( any old jar will do, a clean used spaghetti sauce jar will work (
At serving melt 2 tbsp fat (butter, margarine, lard, oil) saute 1 cup mixture until golden brown, add 2 1/4 cups water, bring to boil, cover and simmer on reduced heat for 15 minutes.
    So good!

Thanks, I feel vindicated now! I've stocked up on everything on your list except beans (I HATE beans) and canned sausages (I didn't even know those existed). I have food grade buckets of flour, rice, and sugar, and gallons of water, vinegar and cooking oil. Now I'm looking into collecting rain water.
Some stuff that may help new preppers:
I built up 2 very well-stocked bugout bags years ago. They have really nice first-aid kits that I built up over time, a high quality survival knife, ax, and iodine pills to prevent radiation poisoning, other iodine pills for purifying water, an Israeli gas mask, Leatherman utility tool, folding shovel, spare cash, trash bags (for collecting water, etc), road maps, 2 compasses, heavy duty flashlight with crank generator, Katadyn water purifier (NOT just a filter!), small tent, emergency thermal blanket, fishing kit, slingshot, rope, baggies, waterproof matches, magnifying glass, lighters, flint striker with magnesium, fire start material, Sterno, FRS/GMRS Two-way radios, hand sanitizer, titanium cooking kit and more that I can't remember. Anything that could be damaged by water is in sealed, plastic bags.
Also, look into emergency radios. I have one that has rechargeable batteries, will run on solar, has a USB port for charging my phone, and a crank generator. Avoid the ones with LCD screens at all costs! The screen will stop working in high heat and break down easily. I would also suggest a bicycle (don't forget a patch kit). I actually have seen all cars banned from the roads, and it could very well happen again. Also hardcopies of all your important information (Numbers for utilities to cancel/change service, important phone numbers for friends, family, emergency, etc. Don't rely on electronic devices working in an emergency. Plus a camera will be very handy for remembering things. Don't rely on cellphone for pictures - you'll want to conserve that battery for emergency calls, assuming the networks are operational. Guns will also be necessary for a variety of reasons.
Right now I'm confident that I could survive easily for over 6 months at home or possibly even in the wilderness if it came to that, and every week when I go food shopping I buy a few more things. I am far from wealthy. It took me years to get all this together, but it adds up fast, so don't let the long list intimidate you. Hope this helps someone.

Months (almost a year) ago, I got the intuitive feeling that I should start "squirreling away" food and other supplies -- for what, I didn't know. I bought coffee and other things on sale before I needed it, meats were purchased in larger amounts than needed, and put into the freezer. Other things, too...a lot of them on the list you read from.
What happened in March was, my husband passed from cov!d because of his diabetes, leaving me with only my income, and that a partial one, as I was also sick with what turned out to be long-cov!d.
I watched this video to see what I could improve, and was pleasantly surprised at how well I'd stocked up for what ended up being a very bad surprise in my life. Over three months later, my shopping trips have been for only basic and perishable necessities.

Then get a drying rack and clothesline clips. Give yourself some options. I now have 4 different options to choose from. There's also some plunger devises to use with 5 gallon buckets. Tuna in oil is the better choice for heath short term but if you are wanting to store your tuna for 3+ years, stored in water is the way to go

You can make Ramen 🍜 healthy. Toss the spice / seasoning packet in it and mix in dried or fresh veggies from the garden. It’s a way of extending a garden’s yields. If you’re able, add a cooked egg on top after the vegetables and ramen are done cooking. This increases the nutrition a lot.
It will all fit into one pan, one bowl, one fork so = easy cleaning in a SHTF situation.
I wish I could take credit for that hack but it was actually my doctor who said that he would often bring ramen or soba noodles to work for lunch and instead of the preservatives in the seasoning packets he would replace them with whatever vegetables he and his family had left over from the night before and have it alongside an egg.

I dont use the spice packages in the Ramen. I have a draw of it and maybe use it in the future for a few packs of ramen instead of just one pack. I add an egg or two, chopped up green onions or scapes, add some zucchini or whatever veggie I have that was on sale, and add some Parmigiano dried cheese, and a sprinkle of pepper or chili powder. Now that's a meal. Ramen noodles (not the season packet) can also be added to chicken broth and a can of chicken to make a protein and carb meal with liquid.

Great list Mac youve definitely given us all some truly helpful suggestions... consider adding candles, bar soap, chewable vitamins/asprin and pepto bismol and corn starch powder.... No electricity can lead to sleepless night if we're very used to sleeping in air conditioning - using light dustings of powder on bed and body makes you far more comfortable so when it's time to rest your able to accomplish that. If its in the budget...maybe grab some canned peaches and "ghee" (aka clarified butter).... about a week into your menu some butter salt and pepper on the potatoes or rice will be a welcome addition. These items are kind of pricey already but if you can... do... thanks for all your efforts.

Thank you. I have been saving my gallon jugs of milk. Cleanse them with Dawn and few drops bleach so these could be my water for toilet, bathing or anything I would need to clean. Not my drinking water! ❤️

You could use them for drinking in a pinch... just add a few drops of bleach first (look up the correct amount online first!)

I save my milk jugs to reuse for water jugs. I also winter sow my seeds with them. I also have a rocket stove and a grill. I had the electric go out a few years ago at my apartment complex due to a severe ice storm. The power was out for a week. Everyone except me left the building. I had filled water jugs with water and froze them to take up room in the stand up freezer. I used that to keep in my refrigerator freezer and keep the food cool enough for the whole week. I also cooked all my meals on my grill. Everyone asked how I survived....I just did what I have always done to survive. Great video! Wonderful advice.
