We had a discussion on this over at the BLBL discord and we concluded that it's not a queen but also not quite a king! They're like a king with the top cut off. They truly are monarchs.
@@ecogeek234 yes, they are king pieces with the top cross removed. also, notice at 1:19 the extra coat(s) of paint to make them white, it's possible they might be black pieces with this whitewash-esque coat to "switch" colors (genders).
I did NOT like that silly silly ya part at first, but it has grown on me. They really ate with this debut, and Hyun came out of nowhere and just DECLARED himself my bias. He didn't even give me the option of choice lmao
i will say, I was kinda worried that Hyun was going to get overshadowed in the group because everyone else came off of a successful survival show and has a following. But MAN! did he hold his own and CAPTIVATE us. His voice is so nice.
Seriously, and I'm not sure Mnet exactly wanted to make the show they made 😂 they tried to stir up conflict but everyone was just gay and excited to be together
I see the “silly silly ya” as a taunt, the entire part kind of is. To the people that instictively hate them maybe. Like a “you think we’re too much now? Just wait, this is only a preview of the amount of cvnt we’ll serve in our career”

Long reply coming but I do think the people in front of xlov when they're performing not making eye contact is very significant because the frame where they're in the same position with no one performing in front of them, their faces are completely blurred out (7:29). I could probably write an essay on this alone with how this could be related to "look at me" like you mentioned but also about how insignificant people can be even if they don't feel that way in the moment. When xlov are performing in front of them they are seeing them look disinterested but when they're away they're just a blurry memory and that not everyone is going to be accepting, that they don't need to be in your life. This was also the last scene with them in the performance room and after that, the chairs are still there but tipped over in the background with the members dancing towards the camera instead of towards the students.
I keep coming back to this so adding on, whoever decided to use the school uniforms/classroom feel was so smart because that is a major way of visualizing the expectation of "men's and women's" clothing & gender presentation from a young age. This visual with the xlov members being in altered uniforms is so good i literally can't stop thinking about it. There was also a very specific decision made in choosing to have boys and girls as the other students because of that instead of them being in like an all boys' school or even a different scene because the school scenes don't really last the whole video, and it's not like it's a school concept either.
I realized that they are on the chessboard and are represented by 4 white queens; in the end, they are represented by 4 white doves. The artistry but also slay
I’m so glad yall spent time breaking down the layers of this MV. I really think it’s going to be discussed 4 years from now in the threads, essays, commentaries about queerness/gender studies in kpop.
Like what Adam said, something I respect about XLOV is the very intentional thought they put into their concept. Literally everything has a purpose. Someone said that Wumuti has been planning this group for 2-3 years and it’s so obvious. If they continue like this I have no worries they’ll become even more successful. Such a great debut.
I agree with Adam that their concept is so strong, like they(the group and the company) clearly had a vision and I also really appreciate that, especially since it stands out versus other groups doing a more boy/girl next door kind of tame (not a read) debut, like this is a big bold concept for a debut and I love that for them. Also just gotta say I’m obsessed with the Hyun Wumuti key change at the end chefs kiss
i'm so happy this hit you all so strongly--i've been absolutely obsessed with this group. the way that at the end of the video, they all find the exit together from the confines of the room/performance and become free together (as we get the shot of the birds flying) ??? something about the way this confronts gender so directly and also so sensually--sometimes i feel like some of art/performance that is interested in androgyny and genderless/fluid presentation isn't interested in sensuality--but this video, and this song as much as it is a confrontation about gender performance is also a challenge--it's sexy and it's sensual and it's bold and it's brave and i'm so incredibly proud of the group.
at the risk of sounding cheesy...XLOV couldn't have come at a better time since our resident queer reps, OnlyOneOf, is quiet and members are going out to ✨SERVE✨😭
There were two exits in the background and when they exit, the shot is cropped so you don't actually see which exit they went thru and in a way they're like "exiting" the gender binary. I don't think ur galaxy braining it, the subtext is there 😂
I think this is definitely my favorite non ZB1 debut to come out from all the post Boys Planet groups. While I don't like the chanty chorus, I love everything else about the song! Im obsessed with the verses too, great debut!
i don't think ur galaxy-braining this at all adam!! as a nonbinary person i found this video incredibly resonant and i think that's only because it speaks to something very true and real within queer identity! there definitely is something there in the scene where they're dancing for the students(?) and the camera view is behind them. i also got the vibe of, like, bullying scenes in kdramas? also because what i know of discipline in korean schools is also about humiliation--so you'd also have to perform your "punishments" /for/ the other students, to be made an example of. that scene felt like a deliberate play on that idea, and incorporating the idea of "doing/performing" gender into it as well. they're aware that the other students (viewers/audience) might find the very fact that they're doing a genderless concept humiliating, but their apathetic performance of it speaks to both bravery and challenge, as well as the voyeuristic element that RJ mentioned. like they're saying "actually you are the ones who should be embarrassed." i also love the lyric "paint the color that you need." i think that is the most exemplary thing of the "genderless" concept--not that they're shirking gender entirely, but they're forcing the audience to React To Their Gender consciously instead of passively, which i think is how a lot of non-queer people go about their lives. they're saying you can see us however you want--you can call us boys in drag or girls or nonbinary or whatever, but Because our performance is inherently rule-breaking, you /must/ "paint a color"/pick a gender/actively engage with our presentation in some way. even an audience looking down on/being disgusted by them would be a success, because they've forced the viewer to actually confront gnc identities. whew sorry for the essay but i loved this and ur guys' reaction! i know you don't typically do dance practice reactions but i wonder if this one would be worth it just to see Rui do his thing haha. wishing u the best and can't wait for kingdom next week
Thank you for your great comment! Because I like XLOV_RUI very much It’s really exciting and happy to finally wait for his debut~ I also hope that XLOV will be seen and recognized by more people. Thank you again for sharing!
see i had the EXACT same reaction as adam when the chorus started lol its so funny bc its not even the whole chorus just those two lines???? two lines they couldve changed and this song genuinely wouldve been flawless for me 😭 that being said i ended up listening to the song a couple more times and still hate that part of the chorus but i love the versus/prechoruses so much that im willing to overlook the crime that is "silly silly ya".... xlov has made it to my playlist and that is no small feat
the pre chorus kills it a bit because it's such a change from the chorus "Imma be wooo wooo woo" and the verses, but aside from that it's such a sexy song and love the genderless concept! They ate it downnn and being bi myself i was just screaming while seeing the video cuz i didn't know their background or anything so it was like "is this for the queers? i feel like it isss a im crazy?" i'm so glad now hahaha
I have found my people! I really cant express how much they ate down. You guys were able to literaly articulate my emotions for this song! I loved your guys' thoughts on this!!

call me crazy but.. we’re seeing these two exit doors in the background all the time and then in the end umuti points at a direction and it finishes with them going through a door, a third different door dare i say?? into a really bright light…cutting to four white pigeons…….?????? does this not scream finding freedom?!?!
OH MY GOD I NOTICED THESE DOORS TOO! I didn’t notice the third door lol BUT THAT’S ACTUALLY SO COOL WHAT this mv is so thought through aaaaah I love art sm!!
Also I really loved the fact that their MC for the showcase was Wonsik who is a member of TMC (debuted with a BL concept and then did a camp comeback) and ToTh6y (queer themed co-ed project)
I saw a small clip was obsessed! Then went to watched the performance video even more obsessed! Watched the full music video! Like I’m literally can’t. So good. Also the sparkles on the face was actually a makeup trend before, so could be.
absolutely obsessed with this since it came out thank you for having more coherent words to talk about it than i do!! all i can do is shriek WHO IS SHE. WHO IS THAT DIVA WHERE DID YOU FIND HYUN TELL US EVERYTHING... truly an incredible group i don't know how to go on with my life now. wumuti we are waiting for your appearance on the channel thank you monarch
i feel like kpop has always played with androgyny and gender presentation (boys groups more so than girls groups. ggs definitely had androgyny moments back in 2nd gen and early 3rd gen but has since had a pretty rapid decline, one might say at the same rate that the gender divide between idol groups increased 👀) however i think its extremely rare for a kpop group to truly delve deeper into the deconstruction of gender and explore what it actually means to be genderless (or gender non-conforming, etc) from an identity and social structure view point. opposed to just engaging with gender on a purely aesthetic/stylistic level.
I was going to make the same comment. I know most gay male fanboys gravitate towards girl groups, but to me, boy groups are absolutely doing drag whether they're performing a sort of ridiculous hyper masculinity or they're subverting gender norms by dressing like Itaewon twinks or wearing corsets and make up. K-Pop is incredibly queer whether the queerness is intentional or not, I think. And maybe it's a capitalist cash grab move made by companies, but it seems like most groups at this point have at least one or two member that they encourage to be androgynous to appeal to fans, who is specifically selected to be in the group to in order to diversify the audience the group can reach by attracting more queer fans (Jimin, Felix, Taemin, Seonghwa, etc). I agree with Adam ultimately though that even if K-Pop is in some ways more queer than western pop music, it's also deeply regressive and patriarchal in other ways? That's why groups like xlov and onlyoneof are still so exciting for taking something that appeals to a minority of people and making it explicit and the center of a concept, rather than just being in the mix (like BTS, Stray Kids, Shinee, and Ateez etc.) but part of something that would still appeal to a heteronormative or straight audience.
Literally been obsessed with Imma Be for the past 4 days, they ate that shit up. I voted for Wumuti the entire time during boys planet and I'm so glad he lost so he could come back and be a part of stuff like this
When I went to TH-cams recommendation's and saw that styling that looked similar to HongJoong in Ice on my Teeth I clicked right away -instantly swooned. I've watched it so many times. That video is probably one of my all time faves precisely because of the genderless concept. I love the techno and dark house remixes too.
I found your channel through this reaction! Seeing their debut I KNEW I had to find other queer people’s reactions and got so much joy from watching you both react to this 🤍 thanks kingsss
You go through so many emotions during this video and I love it! This video is so queer coded and the lyrics! And the amount of cvnt in the choreo! I’m already a Wumuti stan, this just made it even more. ❤
Love when artists genuinely put their ALL into making ART its genuinely so refreshing. As soon as i saw them i was so impressed but as i keep watching and hearing other people talk about i realize how much thought and effort they put into this. Im in awe
I've been waiting for this one! It's phenomenal, the mv their performance the song (although I'm also not the biggest fan of the first half of the chorus) I was in fact gagged and I remain gagged. Also Hyun had me mesmerized (i do see the comparison to Bain absolutely) who is he??
I looooove every single aspect of this (except for the chanty prechorus or first half of the chorus, whatever it is). The rest of the song, the looks, the choreo, the visuals of the MV.
Same on the silly silly ya, but the song still slaps 🤣 Honestly, I’m so fucking proud of them - Wumuti really collected the genderless/queer avengers and proved a point. I’m SO curious about what they’re going to do next!! (Also Hanbin did the dance challenge with them WE’RE GETTING CLOSER Y’ALL)
I thought i would never see haru again, assuming he would prolly debut on a Japanese group and that made me feel bad during bp era, especially since i started watching his fancams long after he's gone from the competition. And i felt so bad cause he really is one of the best dancers in bp, next to quan rui, and now they are in a same group. A group with my the one that got away wumuti at that. This group is a gift for boys planet dark horses stans together with evnne and one pact
The showcase is so worth watching too, Eng subs and a lot of cool background info coming through there, it was good. More serious than most, interestingly! 🤔
Please react to their dance practice, I watched your reaction to the MV twice now! Love you girlies so much, this is my first time watching one of your videos and I’m very interested in what you guys will think of the whole dance. It goes crazy and the divas absolutely ate and left us with our jaws on the god damn floor.
I was excited to hear what you guys thought of it! I loved it. Not gonna lie i was a bit scared that i would be let down with how excited I was. I should have known better and excited with what else they have coming. Also im pretty sure the coloured contacts is based of their representative colour. Wumuti-red Rui-pink Hyun-blue and Haru- yellow. I wonder if they'll continue with it or incorporate their colours in different ways
This is the queer art we need to protect
Love the Miss Megami reference here HAHAHAH
Did you notice how their were 4 queen chess pieces on the board?? 🤭

I was not at all annoyed during this video. This video shocked me it’s so good! I had no idea of any of the members or this group before today!
Our fandom name is EVOL :D
7:05 lmaooo that was me when i watch it for the first time 🤭😮
I found your channel through this reaction! Seeing their debut I KNEW I had to find other queer people’s reactions and got so much joy from watching you both react to this 🤍 thanks kingsss
I must say it is quite refreshing.
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS
please god please interview them idk how but please make it happen
XLOV is about to bring the Es Una Pasiva BACK into kpop and i have no notes
representation matters
I RAN HERE
You go through so many emotions during this video and I love it! This video is so queer coded and the lyrics! And the amount of cvnt in the choreo!
I’m already a Wumuti stan, this just made it even more. ❤
I bet they lost their minds when they saw Hanbin do the challenge
i'm with you on that chorus part but i am HERE for the concept and i can't wait to see what they do next!!
I will protect them with my life, I'm not even kidding
The logo reminds me of KISSOFLIFE, the concept reminds me of Red Velvet, the vocals and expressions reminds me of Mamamoo!💗🎀
the chorus reaction was so me… she grew on me already though
I looooove every single aspect of this (except for the chanty prechorus or first half of the chorus, whatever it is). The rest of the song, the looks, the choreo, the visuals of the MV.
Love how much there is to discuss. Also wondering about the random foods passing by the window
Same on the silly silly ya, but the song still slaps 🤣
Honestly, I’m so fucking proud of them - Wumuti really collected the genderless/queer avengers and proved a point. I’m SO curious about what they’re going to do next!!
(Also Hanbin did the dance challenge with them WE’RE GETTING CLOSER Y’ALL)
Zhang Hao has also done the dance challenge with them now
YES BAIN omg i was wondering who hyun reminded me of
I thought i would never see haru again, assuming he would prolly debut on a Japanese group and that made me feel bad during bp era, especially since i started watching his fancams long after he's gone from the competition. And i felt so bad cause he really is one of the best dancers in bp, next to quan rui, and now they are in a same group. A group with my the one that got away wumuti at that. This group is a gift for boys planet dark horses stans together with evnne and one pact
I was wondering who hyun reminds me of! When you said Bain I was like: omg yess 100%
The showcase is so worth watching too, Eng subs and a lot of cool background info coming through there, it was good. More serious than most, interestingly! 🤔
You guys should totally check out their dance practice if you haven’t already!
Please react to their dance practice, I watched your reaction to the MV twice now! Love you girlies so much, this is my first time watching one of your videos and I’m very interested in what you guys will think of the whole dance. It goes crazy and the divas absolutely ate and left us with our jaws on the god damn floor.
watch the dance performance video, you get more out of it, every move is fire.
YAAAY I WAS WAITING FOR YOUR REACTION GUYS
28:15 yeah not at all why would a fan be annoyed by you getting interested/diving deeper into their fave?
I was excited to hear what you guys thought of it! I loved it. Not gonna lie i was a bit scared that i would be let down with how excited I was. I should have known better and excited with what else they have coming.
Also im pretty sure the coloured contacts is based of their representative colour. Wumuti-red Rui-pink Hyun-blue and Haru- yellow. I wonder if they'll continue with it or incorporate their colours in different ways
Am I going to find someone that loves the pre chorus because I LIVE for it.
im literally obsessed with them
and Hyun's vocals??? yeah!
I had to watch their video several times in a row. It was so good and original.
Best reaction video! It was so real and raw!
4:09 Yes go with this rumor😂💯 And adding LAURENCE (n.SSign) to this Taiwan family too😂 They're all just so cute😍
THANK YOU FOR YIUR COMMENTARY!!!
