I like Dorothy being so regretful about killing Nessa even though it was in no way her fault, since in the book she goes to Elphaba's castle NOT to carry out The Wizards assassination mission but because the Wizard mentioned Nessa and Elphaba were sisters and Dorothy DESPERATELY wanted to apologise. (Elphaba then hit her breaking point, set her broom on fire and started swinging it around like a mad woman, accidentally seting herself on fire as well. Dorothy promptly tried to save her life with a nearby bucket of water and... Well now she's regretful and probably also traumatised!)
It's about relativity. The scarecrow's own existance will be perfectly sane to him, and Dorothy doesn't know what is and isn't seen as possible or normal in Oz. Flying monkeys are an established fact of the world, but cars - vehicles that move with neither horse or magic - could seem absurd. Or they could be just as mundane as they are here.

This honestly makes a lot more sense in the context of the book than the movie. Scarecrow ousted the wizard and became the new king of the emerald city, convenes with the witch of the south, the ACTUAL Glinda, and since he's no parable of Dorothy's close friend that makes him either seriously unconfident in himself or a master planner from the start.

I like how regretful Dorothy is about killing nessa, even though it was not her fault that her own house landed on her and turning Nessa into a witch pancake, and Dorothy wanted to apologize for it. And apparently in the book, Elphaba hit her breaking point, ( anyone would after what she went through) set fire to her broom, started to wave it around like a crazy woman, ended up with her being on fire and Dorothy tried to put out the fire with a bucket of water and now Dorothy is now traumatized by seeing her melt
He's only Fiyero in the play. Not so much in the Wicked novel. Kind of gets torn apart by monkeys there. Still fights like hell against crows, though. In the original Oz novel, he doesn't get brains, he gets BRAN. Oscar Diggs just pours cereal in Scarecrow's head and jams needles in to hold it in place. Whatever works, I suppose.
The one thing here that really annoys me is that if this is Wicked, then Dorothy should be wearing Silver shoes, rather than Ruby Slippers. EDIT: Since y'all keep talking about it, I figure I should add this. I have seen the stage version. The production I saw was vague about whether or not the slippers ever actually turned red (plus my memory sucks and I just remember them starting off silver). I have gotten many replies already telling me about Elphaba's spell changing them in Act 2.
If I remember correctly, in the stage version, the silver slippers turn Ruby when Elphaba enchants them. From what little we’ve seen of Dorothy in the movie adaptation, it seems that they’re dropping that detail. Most likely over copyright from Warner Bros.
Does anyone remember how old Dorothy was supposed to be in the original book? It's been so long since I've read it and the movie makes her seem like a possible mid to late teen.
Mad with grief, yes, but Fiyero likely could have talked her down. They both know if anyone's to blame, it's the Wizard - Elphaba is just overwhelmed in the moment.
@@redrasegardenYeah if I remember correctly from the musical, and if you don’t mind spoilers The Tin man was the guy Nessa liked but he really like Glinda, Nessa cursing him into the Tin man. I think at least, anyone feel free to correct me
Save for Boq being the character (there two separate character in the Oz books) I’m pretty sure that’s also the same thing that happened to him in the original wizard of Oz book as well. The only major difference being that he became the woodsman by chopping off all his body parts.
@@dylantennant6594The Tin Man's backstory is very different in the original books. The only thing that's the same is that he was once a munchkin (and I guess another similarity is that their backstories involve an ill-fated relationship and witches)
Yeah since Wicked has its own set of sequels, its adaptation is definitely non-canon to the old film and books. Which is fine, but it took too long for me to overlook the plotholes trying to connect em
Hey hey why are people blaming Dorothy all she wants to do is go home she never asked to come to oz she didn't want those shoes and it wasn't her fault her house crushed a witch if anything its glindas fault for basically giving the girl those ruby slippers if the wicked witch wants them back she should just explain and not attack Dorothy who's scared and probably still a little dizzy from being in a twister
Interestingly, wicked doesn’t match up well enough to the original Oz books to be compatible as a prequel. Basically, anything said in wicked, canonically speaking, is just a *really* successful fan fiction, or, if you prefer an in-universe explaination, are basically propaganda works for the wicked with.
There are many that like it even better than the stage play, while others find it too dense, dark, and different in comparison. It's really one of those things you have to check out yourself to see if you'd like it.
imagine if the movie OZ and the old wizard of OZ movie existed before wicked and wicked did its OWN thing Hopefully their not trying to put the movie as the true origins Right?
I know right? Geezus I absolutely hate the musical/book but it's showing up everywhere despite me telling TH-cam not to. I'll be thankful when it dies back down.
And this is why I hate the 1930’s Wizard of Oz. The Good witch of the North and Glinda were two different people. People keep using that stupid fulm as a reference point.
I don't understand how people can dislike it as passionately as in some of these comments. Perhaps we could enlighten each other? I enjoy perspective flips, and the musical has some solid numbers. This isn't my *favourite* work of this sort (that'd be Twisted), but AFAIK it's what started the trend.
@BillNyeTheRussianSpy I saw lots of praise and fans of the work, but ok, I can give my viewpoint. It's overrated, and I feel takes away from the story. I really don't think the wicked witch needed some sob story to show why she became evil. And the whole scarecrow was actually her lover thing? I don't know it just irks me when people have to go and rewrite entire stories for their views. Why can't they just make ut with their own characters instead of using well-known and liked ones. Besides the amount of plot holes the book creates. The origibook was actually about the American government system at the time. The yellow brick road, being the gold standard and Dorothy's silver shoes, were the silver standard.
@pokemontrainer5678 Thank you! The whole Fiyero/Scarecrow thing doesn't bother me, personally, but it's not a highlight and I can see how some could think it too much. I disagree with the premise of the "sob story" comment, though, on two grounds: 1) People write what they want to write. If that ends up being some unexplored niche of a classic story's plot and/or worldbuilding, there's nothing wrong with that, nor if the result resonates with a large audience. 2) "Mustache-twirler" villains - who are just evil for the sake of being evil - are dangerous if not approached carefully. For example, they could be played for comedy, like Jack Horner in The Last Wish, or they could be serial manipulators fishing for undeserved sympathy, like the Joker. Handled carelessly, they can promote black-and-white morality and even "main character syndrome" to the audience - and I absolutely understand how someone could see the Wicked Witch of the West as doing this. Worse yet, for all its other merits - the political allegory, the timeless songs from the movie, etc. - the original Wizard of Oz unequivocally correlated morality with conventional beauty (via Glinda's first impressions of Dorothy), and I've seen that mess some kids up, most recently my 10yo Black adoptive sister (who, incidentally, ended up *adoring* Wicked and especially Elphaba).
Damn, I wrote up a rather long reply, and it seems YT ate it. I'll try again: Thank you! I get where you're coming from with the romance arc, though it didn't bother me personally. I do disagree with the premise of the "sob story" comment for a couple of reasons: 1) People write what they want to write. There's nothing wrong with that, even if it's exploring some unexplored niche of another story's plot/world - and of course it's not going to resonate with everyone (which is also OK). 2) Mustache-twirlers - villains who are evil for no real reason - can be dangerous if not approached carefully. For example, they could be played for comedy (like Jack Horner in The Last Wish), or they could be serial manipulators whose fishing for sympathy is part of the danger they pose (like the Joker). Handled carelessly, they can promote black-and-white morality and even main character syndrome in audiences; while I can't say for sure whether the Wicked Witch of the West did this, I can absolutely see how she could rub people the wrong way in that regard. Worse yet, though, for all its other merits - including, as you say, the political allegory - the original Wizard of Oz unequivocally correlated morality with conventional beauty (via Glinda's first impressions of Dorothy), and I've seen that mess some kids up, most recently my 10yo Black adoptive sister.
@BillNyeTheRussianSpy I see where you're coming from on the villain thing, but the wicked witch just oozes it. To me, she is like the original big bad guy, especially if you look at the story like a d&d campaign. It also makes more sense why her minions literally celebrate the death of her. Her evil reign of terror is at an end, and they can all be free. On the morality in beauty thing I honestly can't see where you are coming from. But thays mainly because I have autism and I've never cared about looks or anything o the sort so it's hard for me to comprehend the struggle with it.
Wicked is a nice enough story but pretending it is in anyway canon is foolish. It is published fanfiction. It also started the troubling trend of villains actually being misunderstood heroes. With of course heroes being, by necessity, villains.
Do you not know the concept of multiple continuities, alternate universes, or just merely the fact that a story can be more complex than it is at first glance? Dorothy is the hero of the original Oz tale, and she's still an innocent kid in this as she is in that. She's just unfortunately being manipulated by adults with political agendas, something you can and do see happen in real life. Even in the movie Glinda was a tad catty, what with asking Dorothy what type of witch she was and then saying only bad witches were ugly. And the Wizard was always a fraud, he didn't have any real magic in the first place. And with that in place, Wicked tried to ask the question "okay, why was the Witch considered wicked prior to Dorothy coming to Oz" because she clearly had the reputation before Dorothy. And yes, not every villian needs to be sympathetic, but asking "what possibly could have made someone like this" is not an inherently bad question

I really hope the second movie dives more into the Dorothy side of the story.
Scarecrow later after Dorothy left. So Glenda what was all this about sending a poor child on a wild goose chase!!! Would you like to run that by me again my dear friend. Glenda 🥲
Wonder if the Lion would actually be cowardly or perhaps he's simply shy.
I would buy this version of the wizard of oz XD
I like how regretful Dorothy is about killing nessa, even though it was not her fault that her own house landed on her and turning Nessa into a witch pancake, and Dorothy wanted to apologize for it. And apparently in the book, Elphaba hit her breaking point, ( anyone would after what she went through) set fire to her broom, started to wave it around like a crazy woman, ended up with her being on fire and Dorothy tried to put out the fire with a bucket of water and now Dorothy is now traumatized by seeing her melt
Please do the lion and the tin man
Yes please do the rest of these!
Just wait until he beats the Tinman
Nice Video
I like this version of Scarecrow, he knows the Wizard is full of shit 😄
Glinda funny enough was against the idea of dropping a house on her.
I totally agree with her, ealphaba is totally gonna murder dis child, dear lord help da scarecrow get through this! 😂 lmao
I want to see this. Scarecrow
Poor Fiyero. This journey sure isn't going to be easy for him.
I haven’t watched wicked yet but man I miss the wizard of oz I should rewatch it
In all continuities the scarecrow remains the only sensible adult. It is Oz law.
Ruby slippers are more inconiv
I think it’s explained that Elphaba turns Nessaroses sliver slippers into ruby slippers and they allow her to walk now
If I remember correctly, in the stage version, the silver slippers turn Ruby when Elphaba enchants them. From what little we’ve seen of Dorothy in the movie adaptation, it seems that they’re dropping that detail. Most likely over copyright from Warner Bros.
I was gonna say wait for part 2 and you'll see, but I see others have already spoiled it XD
Silver shoes are book accurate. They made them red for that movie to show off the technicolor
Does anyone remember how old Dorothy was supposed to be in the original book? It's been so long since I've read it and the movie makes her seem like a possible mid to late teen.
Age isn't stated outright, but it's safe to assume she's about 12
@caril.9384 Thank you
Scarecrow/Fierro need a new brain every 5 minutes cuz he cannot help begin vrainwashed into helping kids that Glinda sends on deadly adventures!
I wonder how this would work with the tin man and the cowardly lion
The cowardly lion is basically just the average citizen of oz and has been trying desperately to not get involved in magic BS
@@captainhuntank7963also, Fiyero helped him as a cub too. Tinman’s the outlier of this company
Great dub!
That guy was a menace
Can you make a part 2
Imagine how the tin man one went down.
I badly want more of this, what is the tinman like? Is he more like his origin where he has killed or is he a goof
Edit: he’s a himbo
that's a nice way of doing it. I like how they did't chang the story too mach. with you be doing the tin man and lion too?
Can you dub their other wicked comics please
Oh brother. Wicked and the Wizard of Oz in the same universe
More of this plz
Honestly hoping for a scene like this in part 2
You know what... yes... this is now cannon to me, pfft, omg. yes.
I LOVE IT!!
Wait....WAS Elphba ever mad at Dorthoy for what happened to his sister?
I'm not that solid on Wicked lore.......
Yes
Yeah, but she was grieving.
yes and no, Wicked-yeah but out of Grief
Oz-never gave a damn about her sister and just wanted the shoes
Mad with grief, yes, but Fiyero likely could have talked her down. They both know if anyone's to blame, it's the Wizard - Elphaba is just overwhelmed in the moment.
Do the tin man next
Is there one?
@@redrasegardenYeah if I remember correctly from the musical, and if you don’t mind spoilers
The Tin man was the guy Nessa liked but he really like Glinda, Nessa cursing him into the Tin man. I think at least, anyone feel free to correct me
@@cutesymarie5441 no biggy on the spoiler. I saw it live ages ago.
I loved this
Man if this cersion of the Scarecrow is like this I wanna know what the Tin Man and Cowderly Lion are like.
Okay, is the text in the bubbles moving or am I imagining that?
Yeah since Wicked has its own set of sequels, its adaptation is definitely non-canon to the old film and books. Which is fine, but it took too long for me to overlook the plotholes trying to connect em
Hey hey why are people blaming Dorothy all she wants to do is go home she never asked to come to oz she didn't want those shoes and it wasn't her fault her house crushed a witch if anything its glindas fault for basically giving the girl those ruby slippers if the wicked witch wants them back she should just explain and not attack Dorothy who's scared and probably still a little dizzy from being in a twister
Dorothy’s voice acting is good, but also it gives me Nanao from RAD vibes.
Oz has ibuprofen?
The artwork looks familiar
Interestingly, wicked doesn’t match up well enough to the original Oz books to be compatible as a prequel. Basically, anything said in wicked, canonically speaking, is just a *really* successful fan fiction, or, if you prefer an in-universe explaination, are basically propaganda works for the wicked with.
Doesn't Wicked itself frame a lot of the original books' worldbuilding as propaganda from the Wizard and Morrible?
I haven’t seen wicked but this is funny as fuck .. is the book any good
Yes it is
@@Magnicentrabbit the book is very interesting. It’s a lot darker than the play, almost to the point of absurdity if I’m being honest.
There are many that like it even better than the stage play, while others find it too dense, dark, and different in comparison. It's really one of those things you have to check out yourself to see if you'd like it.
Wicked comic? This is the Wizard of Oz story not Wicked
This is Wicked seen through the eyes of Dorothy, who doesn't know any better.
hahahahaha love it
Obligatory Dancing Through Life comment
😂
I WANT THE OG ARTIST
I saw this on google images lmaooo 😂
imagine if the movie OZ and the old wizard of OZ movie existed before wicked and wicked did its OWN thing Hopefully their not trying to put the movie as the true origins Right?
🤣
Thank goodness Wicked was just a fanfic and not canon
Thank you captain obvious
I know right? Geezus I absolutely hate the musical/book but it's showing up everywhere despite me telling TH-cam not to. I'll be thankful when it dies back down.
@@alpyki2588the Studio and Company are paying TH-cam to keep advertising it
And this is why I hate the 1930’s Wizard of Oz. The Good witch of the North and Glinda were two different people. People keep using that stupid fulm as a reference point.
Don't forget that Elphaba wanted to steal her sisters shoes.
was she willing to kill her over them
@@Feasco She came off as ghoulish just like Dorthy comes off as a force of misfortune.
Honestly I prefer the original wizard of OZ.
See this why it makes no sense if Wicked was Canon
):( D
I seriously dont understand how people can like wicked.
I disagree with the premise of the "sob story" comment, though, on two grounds:
1) People write what they want to write.
I'll try again:
Thank you! I get where you're coming from with the romance arc, though it didn't bother me personally. I do disagree with the premise of the "sob story" comment for a couple of reasons:
1) People write what they want to write.
Honestly I just say it’s a different universe
Isn’t that the opposite of wicked? Isn’t it supposed to say there isn’t really anything that makes someone truely wicked
@@Azulabetta553-sj1ho i was talking more generally about the concept of narrative villians as a whole
@@DragonFaerie wow uhh buddy that's a lot of words for defending someone simply stating that wicked is fanfic so uhh obligatory I ain't reading all that even though I did comment I guess
