  • Progress after a couple of weeks. Dominique looks ready to gobble up a couple more segments...towards completing safe passage over the grand union canal. I just saw a narrowboat sail 'under' the viaduct, i wonder if that was the first one....!?
HS2 is the UK’s new high speed line between London and Birmingham due to open 2029/2033.
The Colne valley viaduct is being constructed in North West London connecting the London tunnels with those of the Chiltern tunnels. It is 3.4km in length and crosses a series of lakes and the Grand Union Canal.
Notice the special form of the piers either side of the canal, there's only 3 similiar pairs along the whole viaduct, designed to withstand breaking forces of the trains.

This is the 21st-century equivalent of the 19th-century Ribblehead Viaduct. In years to come it too will be seen as an iconic piece of engineering, a thing of beauty and quite possibly also a tourist attraction. I’d love to see the Flying Scotsman crossing it!

They've really cracked on with that span obviously want to get the arch over the canal finished. Thanks.

The towpath closed at the beginning of February and looks like it’s just reopened…think they’ll finish that span over the canal within a week or so. All the workers doing amazing job. 👍

You were only about 20 mins away from seeing the 3:02 and 5:08 crane moving into place to pick up another section!
    Great capture of Dominique action.

Wished I had waited…probably could have worked that out with so many construction workers around. 👍

The final piers seem to be waiting..the start is almost out of sight. That’s an amazing build but I guess the bill is staggering as well. You have to believe that it will be in use for a long time and that it’s an investment for the future. Will the future generations realise that and thank us for it. Probably not.

      I think it's about 2 30 billion.

Well, there are always people who are opposed to new things and future generations seem to take the actions of previous ones almost for granted. One thing that is a little disappointing is that journey times on HS2 from London to Birmingham will only be about 30 minutes less than they are now by train. Quite an expense to save 30 minutes but the journey times and capacity of rail travel between Sheffield and Manchester, for example could be improved dramatically with a fraction of the HS2 investment. Similarly, London to Edinburgh could have been upgraded with two new bridges at a fraction of the costs and many more passengers would have seen the benefit, perhaps thanking previous generations for their foresight. HS2 also doesn't go to London but near to it under the current plan.

I saw quite a few goldeneye on lake Harefield which was nice to see, oblivious to the work going on on the v-piers.

That is an incredibly long railway bridge.

At last we will have something of elegance in bridges to show the world ! We admire wonderful constructions, but they're always in foreign parts. Shame on beancounter Sunak !!
