The bin lives in the cellar of my 200-year-old house. In the winter the furnace dries it out, and in the wet season the moisture leaching through the bricks makes the basement very humid. The current set up was started near the first of the year 2021 after the wormpocolypse. A rat was in the basement and all the bins had to be moved to totes and buckets with lids on to protect them. When the rat was ended, I added 4 or more of the in-progress bins/ buckets with the compost mix of red, blue and European nightcrawlers in them to fill the big blue bin. I continued to add ground leaves and food. Currently the bin is undergoing a refresh. I am harvesting the castings as the top of the bin dries and adding new bedding and food. Keeping the moisture even in the bin is difficult in the wet summer. I flip or fluff the bin to keep the air in the bedding. Back to the wedge method starting now.

"No vimpires in the worm bin" got me lol... 😆 As a mother of 3 young kids, moist doesn't bother me. It's fun to play with worms without gloves (like living some kind of childhood dream) but I do get small cuts easily in the kitchen when doing dishes or cooking, so now I try to wear gloves both in the kitchen or worm bins even when it's hot. Love the videos, thanks Ann.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Ann. I just built a 55 gallon system similar to Blue. I used split pool noodles to cover the raw edges rather than sand in this heat, and filled it with the contents of my 20 gallon continuous flow-through vermi composter. The flow through system is designed to harvest from the bottom, but the castings are always soaking wet. In 3 days with my wedge system, I've dried out the castings enough to harvest 15 gallons! It will take some time to fill the trough and increase my worm population. Through your videos, I'm learning to work smarter.
Moist or moisture. Good grief, it's just a description. They need to get their mind out of the gutter.

Hey Anne! We're getting kinda the same weather here in Switzerland. My worms & other critters (tarantulas, jungle roaches...) are happy about that. Maintenance is really easy in these conditions. 😅

Good stuff. I've been farming in 5gal buckets with holes and stacking them, it seems to work pretty well when it comes to getting the worms to migrate up - it's just too small and gets really heavy. (but seems much faster, I do a harvest every two months.) Looking to upgrade to my own Big Blue system, the wedge style makes the most sense to me. I do liek the 5gal buckets to experiment with new food and bedding.
And yes, I hate the little plastic windows. Happy to help my friends get rid of their paper but yeah, it's a picking that out.

With that high humidity--no wonder your bin is holding onto moisture. Ann, would you consider doing a no sift harvest? I know you previously demonstrated a water harvest. I don't get anyone's issues with the word moist. I used to teach high school biology and anatomy. The class always broke out into giggles when I mentioned the word "anus." By the end of the semester, it was my goal to stop the giggling! I'm just catching up with videos now - I was into family/visiting mode for 11 days!

Nothing wrong with the word moist. People who make a big deal over it just need to get a grip or get out of their bubble and in touch with reality. It's just a descriptive word that is useful in our language. That's why it's there.

It’s dirty in their mind, and a worm bin doesn’t bother me but I also love the smell of fresh cow manure. I’m the one the chipmunk ate all my worms, our dry spell let up for a couple days and I was able to capture worms in my trap.my bin wasn’t big so it won’t be long before I’m back to where I was. I still think the chipmunk is cute!
I have no love for the Chipmunks either. They have dug so many holes in my yard. I have twisted my ankle. Trying to mow. Cuteness is not enough.🪱👍🏼😃

I agree with troubles when it’s too humid. I live in New England, we’ve been getting 90F temperatures with 95% humidity for over a week now. Dehumidifier is running in my basement nonstop and just managing to keep humidity at 60% 😓
There is definitely more rain this July than typical. I shouldn't complain. The garden is happy. 😃🪱👍🏼

Gloves! Please, especially if you are pregnant, have a compromised immune system, or have any cuts or scrapes on your hands or arms. Mold, fungus, bacteria, etc can get into your bloodstream! How do I know? I contracted a flesh eating bacteria and had to have a tennis ball chunk of tissue removed from under an armpit.

Sorry to hear about your infection! Usually the flesh eating bacteria is picked up from transfer from medical or institutional settings or from someone who is infected already. The under arm with dark moist spots are ideal places for it to live on your skin. Better safe then sorry if you have any potential condition that effects your immune system. I have raised worms for 35 years and have never gotten an infection with bare hands but I also wear gloves if I'm injured on hands or arms. Of course I wash my hands and arms every time even if I wear gloves.

How long did it take the worms to turn all that into compost? How regularly do you have to feed them?

I have been gifted an established worm condo and it is my first attempt at worm farming. I’m really excited to get going with it but I am a bit nervous that I may ruin the progress. It seems to be very solid and wet on the bottom level and I want to put everything into a bin to break it up/dry it up and bit and assess the situation. I’m wondering how I can switch this tower into a wedge system. The worms seem small and slow right now. Can you give me a bit of advice on how to do the switch and when to feed the worms? Can I feed them right away once switching over or should the give them some time to adjust? I’d like to harvest some of the old castings to use as soon as possible and get these little worms happy and healthy. I will likely try to restart the worm condo once the worms are adjusted and happy.
If you wanted to switch to a wedge to harvest I would recommend to take the most finished and put it to a far end. Then add the condo layers in order of most to least finished. The. Add some new bedding and food to the least done side. All the worms should move to the area with new food and the finished castings can dry out. Let me know if that makes sense. It is always best to start a new bin with some of the old castings. It keeps the biological environment stable and the worms comfortable.👍🏼😁🪱
From my experience. Mellon rinds, avocado, or any fruit will make them more active. It also attracts them to one area. Then they touch each other the will breed. Just don't put in too much fresh stuff in at one time. Don't everwelm them untill the population is bigger. Best of luck. Worms are a great endeavor and their castings are my favorite garden input. I cut along the mold line with a skill saw thru the bung holes. Then I cut a half moon cut around the bottom leaving 1" lip on both halves. Finally eight small stainless steel bolts are used to bolt the two halves together leaving a ridge in the middle.
I used strips of waterproof gorilla tape to piece the two necks together. I think it will be fine, (just built it) but I will keep an eye on it.

I like this idea! Another question is where the heck do you set this very large bin up? I am in Southern Vermont so have to do it indoors. My 200 year old house has a basement but wild horses won't drag me down there! 🥵 I really appreciate your help! 🙃
Moist, haha it does a great job at explaining what you are seeing and feeling. Absolutely right if people are watching a worm video they should be prepared to hear the word moist. Puréed food is good change up for the worms. Figure it will go pretty quick, and it should help to get and keep the cardboard MOIST 😂🪱🪱
