    Nice big 20 gallon haul of mostly-finished materials - and watching Blue getting tended to is always fun! Yeah... I'm the one who has been seeing tiny snails in a couple of my systems. And I have no idea where they came from. Perhaps the were on some leaves, or something that I brought in from outside :)

      I swear I thought all snails were aquatic. I guess it makes sense if slugs are a thing. Lol. I'll have to wear my reader when I do my weeding this year. 😁👍🏼🌱🪱

    Since 1989 just a couple bins at that point. Once I became disabled and had more time I now have 25 bins / systems. I also have expanded my garden by 4x.

    Hello! 👋🏾 I enjoy watching you work your worm bins. I’ve had my layered bin and tiny wedge system for 1 year now. I started because I have a pretty large garden and wanted to make my own castings. Love watching the worms make castings. It took my night crawlers forever to start producing cocoons. Do you have any tips on getting the night crawlers to reproduce faster? My red wigglers produce pretty fast. 😊

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you separate out large adults and put them in a new bin from the juveniles they will reproduce faster. They stopped producing as much when there's a high population density. 🪱👍🏼😊

    There is so much to learn from this channel / community ❤ question as a beginner. What types of items can I add to a bin to help with bulk when I start it? I generate enough paper waste to do monthly bedding additions when I get to that point but drawing a blank on where to get 20 gallons of material to start with. Thanks

    • @PlantObsessed

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hi Anne, just started with the worms beginning of February. Got a barrel cut in half. Ordered 1 lbs and prepared bedding. I know it takes 6 months to establish and patience is probably the hardest. Worried about too much moisture. House is pretty cold so I’m sure they are going slow. But it seems the worms are where the moisture/food is. I have coconut coir… should I try to dry them out? I did put some insulation on them to cover because house is approximately 59f (blame my husband). Just turned the bedding and husband said it smelled a bit musty. Used leaves, packing paper and coconut coir for initial bedding. Maybe added too much water??

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When the worms and microbes get going the musty will stop. At this stage they need moisture to breed and fill out your barrel. Feed people food sparingly only when the last feeding is gone. That should keep the smell down. 👍🏼🪱😃

      @tamarafacchini2 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    • @PlantObsessed

      They will die without food while I. Storage.. They are the kind of mite that eats dead stuff. Not likely to hurt plants later.😁🪱👍🏼

    Please help. What do you add in the form of acid to blend your eggshells? I normally use vinegar but it is never that smooth..
    Is it best to use damp cardbord/paper as the last layer? I have used just dried leaves , then my wet newspaper and plastic.
    I try al sorts of experiments with my bins...not always to my advantage. But then to start over isn't the biggest challenge.

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I added a little orange and a cup of kimchi. The blender is new so maybe just a new blade made the difference. Topping can be wet or dry. I sometimes use dry if i already have gnats. It seems to work better.good luck in your wormery 😁👍🏼🪱

    Do you need a spout or such to drain any liquid near the bottom of the bin? Do you insulate your bin ? i am in snowy cold country but a state park not far away has a bin and they keep thru the winter months

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Most of my bins are inside. The ones that are outside have holes in the bottom so the worms can dig deep. There are also lots of leaves around the bin. The red wigglers seem to wake up in spring even in the coldest of my zone 5 winters.👍🏼🪱😁
