Ajahn Brahm responds to a viewer who wants to know whether we should understand the future in terms of destiny, fate or free will? Who decides what will happen to us next?
One of Ajahn Brahm’s greatest gifts to us is his incredible story telling ability. He is a master at it. A Genius. I laugh in anticipation and have a jolly good time whenever he goes off script to tell us a story. Sadhu 3X !!!
I have a natural feel for astrology and destiny reading.. They are about the tendencies we are born with, probably due to our karma. Some readings don't apply to me so I just ignore them, but some had left me with a dropped jaw.. When we look at the charts, very often we can see that what is happening in our lives is right there in the charts. Before I touched Buddhism, astrology was spiritually healing for me.. It gave me answers.. It told me what was going on.. It's just the cosmic energy, and energy is calculable.. On the other hand, yes, you can change your fate.. This is why we read the charts! We need to know what needs to be changed! Meditation and chanting are precisely what can change our fates.. Detachment is what can change our fate.. Yes we need to transcend our destiny of recurring old age, sickness and death, of recurring dukkha, and Buddhism teaches that it can be done. People like Ajahn Brahm who have high meditative powers are already beyond the influence of astrology. It's because their karma has been purified.
Thank you for sharing cancer stage four and a live for 25years. I hope is real and alive for 25 YEARS. There is lots of things can be done in 25 yrs. Is a great news to me. Thank you very much. Yong suan lin sabrina
Thank you for resonating the reasoning of free will and responsibilities that comes with it. Knowing the consequences, one becomes more appreciative of the free will one chooses to take upon.
With a due respect it is a balance of both fate and free will. I have had many premonition dreams that did come true. The death of my sister, the death of my baby and my husband’s affair and marrying her years after I had the dream. I have seen into the after life because I had near death experiences a few time in my childhood and early adult life; it opens something. A middle road between life and death. There are those with gifts that are also burdens because I can’t stop the things from happening but I can prepare for them emotionally and spiritually and help others prepare. But I have had dreams that tell me where the kidnapped child is and were the lost family treasures are. I have had dreams of people from the other side wanting to communicate with loved ones. So it’s 50/50
well this is depressing. if things are not fated and are up to you, I look at my life having pushed myself to the limit and things are just not going as I've hoped with all my heart no matter how hard I try. where's the "what's meant to be will be" talk that I thought I could fall back on...
Acharn Brahm is capable of giving talks on many levels, when talking on youtube to a mixed group then accuracy and depth are sometimes sacrificed due to time constraints. Tranlsations into english language can also lose something in translation but using Pali terms would reduce audience understanding. Acharn Brahm has tried to strike the right balance when giving dhamma talks to mixed groups.
Why ? ... Why do we seek out fortune tellers ... healers ? Is it because we want to “know.” But isn’t that one of the hallmarks of suffering (Dhukka)! Wanting to know but unable to know !!!
Only point I want to make, I don't think that is how medicine works. Otherwise, we'd be a much worse state, healthwise today. Otherwise, I love Mr. Brahm very much, cheerio :-)
There are different levels of Karma that you are born with. One type if the sum total karma of your incarnations in this particular material manifestation (there are unlimited manifestations). That lies in the future. What you do in this life, can have impact on that karma, even destroy it. BUT the body , mind, situation you are born into IS set, is fated... you are already manifesting your destiny by the parents you have, or do not have, the place you are born into, your poverty from birth and so on.... all this is coming from a past cause that YOU set up. It has to play out, it is part of this body, As long as you draw breath in this body , you are following the karmic path that began from that first breadth. It is so interwoven with the tapestry of every other being, there is no changing it .. or the who fabric of the space time continuum would implode. The only freedom from karma, destiny, is to surrender ego, and give up trying to be controller.... then you have a chance to escape the cycle of birth and death. All else is illusion.
everything is probability, life is deterministic, we are free to choose but these choices have been determined by a chain of events up to this point in time, cause and effect.
I have to disagree with Ajahn Brahm in this one. When I was 20+, my sis took me to a fortune teller. He warned me of certain situation about my future. I didnot believe it, but it did happen just like what he predicted before.
I love you Ajhi brahn , and I know you’re a monk, so just for your info for future, PMS is PRE menstrual syndrome not POST menstrual syndrome. You’re welcome 😉
Free won't doesnt exist either. It still takes other forces, like outside factors, which neurons are firing, fear of the consequences.. etc. Your brain can double check its actions but that's still not free and we still have no power. You cant break addictions easily with willpower, more can most people build habits easily. If you relinquish control over your mind and accept it's completely out of control and you are just the nothingness, that gives the mind a more big picture so it can correct itself. So basically, give up all control and live in the flow, watch your bad habits and negative feelings vanish
There should be fate n destiny. As you believe in reincarnation, rebirth in whatever life into the world is based on his previous life. Is fated for someone to be born into rich family, educated family, poor family etc etc. You can't choose
They chant to pay respect to whoever or whatever they chant towards. This could for example be towards the Buddha, the Dalai Llama, or even a suttra in the Pali Canon. Hope that answers your question :)
The chant is a reminder of who we are. It is a reminder for us to never forget the Buddha teaching. In other religions they use '' bibble'' they get passed down generation to any another generation of other writers and ending up being rendered the scripture. In Buddhism, they don't do such a thing like that.
Ajahn Brahm is a brilliant orator but he doesn't define terms accurately. Instead, he always use his public speech to support his world-abstaining position. He tends to define freedom in terms of freedom from desire, instead freedom to desire, which is fine but excessive implementation of his idea of freedom will turn the world into a North Korea's kind of world. His idea of abstaining for sake of abstaining itself, no bigger goal, no tradeoff, will probably backfire . He also forget that free will would be as difficult as free won't. For example, drinking 1000 glasses of water in a day would be as hard as not drinking at all in a day. So, the most important thing here is you do or don't do something for what? What is your bigger goal? Will the goal, if achieved, more satisfying and more everlasting?
if astrology was fake as said by this monk then how can astrology be a billion dollar business around the globe.many people have experienced their futures through astrology thats why it is a billion dollar business.
it's conditioned into them to believe that it works, even though it doesn't. Just like how smoking a cigar supposedly can get you the girls, when it actually doesn't. If fortune telling works, all the fortune teller won't have to work as a fortune teller, they'd be rich themselves.
so many people believes it because they want to have control of their life and "destiny" because they believe there is one. To not have control over your life feels a very scary thing for most people. Letting go completely of everything including the Will/Volition/Control is on surface a very terrifying thing. To lose control, to let go is scary for many people. But on closer examination, letting go, relinquishing the control, renouncing, renunciation is the one that brings peace, freedom and happiness. With the letting go, one finds release from all the clinging and wanting. This is the way to Nibbana - letting go.
When some of Buddha's disciples asked him - how do we know if a teaching is the true Dhamma? The Buddha answered that - the teaching that leads to abandoning, relinquishment, letting go is the true Dhamma. Similarly, letting go and abandoning of the ego, the will, the self, the do-er, the idea of fortune telling, idea of self, idea of destiny, idea of fate and idea of rites and rituals is the true path. With metta.

Inspiring talk. Only someone who truly understands Buddha's path to freedom can explain it so clearly.

There is no free will
Excellent talk
The Free Won't - this is the perfect guide and path to escape from samsara.

But how do we know what's true? Are we to say no to everything though?

It seems that the "questions from overseas" are coming from people watching Brahm live on the internet. Where are they accessing the live feed?
my master ven ciampa ghiatso was more precise he said when i questioning about my future : future well if you think well , future bad if you think bad
