I heard this song for the first time ever last night and it's already one of my favourite songs of all time. My god. What lyrics. I only discovered The Sound weeks ago and I am completely obsessed. I had no idea Adrian Borland passed until I came across this and saw the comments. I am heartbroken. To find a kindred spirit and then find out they are gone... Heartbroken. Thank you for all you left us... All I am now discovering.
Beautifully said. I, too, have just stumbled upon them. And I was old enough then to have known them but I guess a lot of us in the States missed The Sound
One of the first things I noticed when I was exposed to the Sound in the late 80's ( From the Lion's Mouth) and let alone their brilliant musical dynamics, was the intelligence and incisiveness of the lyrics and, subsequently, got to know that it was the sharp mind of Adrian Borland that penned them.
My spirit's free, you won't get me Into the box your life is locked in Your value system's broken down I see it blocks the road it stopped in And every day the things you crave Make a play for my affection I tell you straight, I won't be swayed I'm walking in the opposite direction They scream at me from flashing screens They hassle me from city walls But these are other people's dreams They don't resemble mine at all And every day the things you crave Make a play for my affection I tell you straight, I won't be swayed I'm walking in the opposite direction The stuff that you hold dear and high How does it warrant such devotion? I think you've lost the reason why Though you still carry on the motion And every day the things you crave Make a play for my affection I tell you straight, I won't be swayed I'm walking in the opposite direction
Around 1980 I had a mix tape with 4 the Sound tunes from The Lions Mouth album on it. There is no doubt in my mind that it was the cassette that was played the most in my beat up 1972 Pontiac Lemans.
It's exactly 20 years since we lost this wonderfully talented, smart man, Adrian Borland, frontman of The Sound. It makes me think of the social problem of suicides and how everyone of us knows someone who dealt with suicidal thoughts. If you're struggling too, I would say that such music is already the reason to exist. It may not be convincing enough for everyone, but it's surely important for me.
Adrian you wrote the best lyrics ever all your songs make me think and of course many others your a legend always in my eyes r.i.p forever my friend i love your music always will :)

Oh, thank you so much for adding this. I was introduced to this music by someone very well versed in great stuff, and this is making me so happy. Bless you.
Love's secrets are unfortunately well kept... even from those who believe they are truly "in" it. The Bible, Kabbalah, and the Tao Te Ching do help... but being shown pure love is the best teacher. All questions and gratitude to the Father!

An artists artist. Rest In Peace, Adrian. Such a beautifully intense spirit, sorely missed ❤
Can never listen to this without tears...
My spirit's free, you won't get me

Wonder if Elliott Smith knew his music.
He may have lived longer if he had. But we'll never know. Now they're both part of a heavenly chorus.
