  • I've been beta testing XSonic's ULooper pedal for a while now and they have allowed me to share this preview of the product with you. Please read the pinned comment as I am updating it with facts/answers that I neglected to put into the video.
    Please pardon the poor guitar playing in this video. I stopped playing for 20 years and I'm practically a beginner again.
    If you have any questions after the video, please leave a comment and I will do my best to answer them.
    The riff used in this video is based on Jessie's Girl by Rick Springfield. If you ever come across this video Rick, I hope you don't come down too hard on me for how I played it.

    I forgot to mention these facts:
    1. Total recording time is 3 hours.
    2. It allows unlimited overdubs.
    3. Since the ULooper uses the USB In/Out of the Spark amps, it is a makeshift FX loop and you can change tones/effects for overdubs.
    4. The ULooper can charge the Mini and Go. This requires a charger that outputs at least 1A.

    • @gaittec
      @gaittec 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      5. You can now use the Spark as an onstage monitor by using the line out to a PA. It does not cut the Spark speakers off like the headphone out does.

    • @Raskull
      @Raskull  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gaittec Yes, that is a great feature of the line out from the ULooper. I think I covered that in the follow up video. I know I covered using the line out. Not sure I said the speaker would continue work.

    I thought about buying one of these but never did. I have ordered the Spark 2 now but this is still an interesting solution. When I checked i saw it on Amazon for $125 which is obviously half the price of the Spark 2 so great option for anyone that owns a Spark 40. Main reason i went with a more expensive solution is i use my Spark in the living room as it is less conspicuous than a normal guitar amp. If i start adding power sources and USB cables it would start to look a little messier and more conspicuous.

      I totally understand. I also preordered a Spark 2 and will be using it with my Positive Grid wireless pedal.

      You are correct. Currently does not have a feature to upload/download the loop (it's only 1 loop with unlimited overdubs).

    Does the looper allow you to change the tone of what you’re looping? (So you lay down a first loop with one tone and then overdub with a different tone?)
    Would be great if you contrasted with the Loopy app that works with the xsonic pedal

    • @Raskull
      @Raskull  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      While I didn't answer that in the video (my mistake), I made sure I covered it in the pinned comment. You can change tones. I will cover it more in a follow-up video. As for contrast with Loopy app and Airstep SPK, I can't since I don't have an Airstep SPK. I have heard that the Airstep does limit the ease of tone switching.

    I might have missed it (reading comments while the video played - bad habit), but the actual audio comes out of the speaker of whatever Spark amp you are using, right? Then I presume if I plug in headphones to the Spark amp, same thing, yes? Apologies for the basic question.

    • @gaittec
      @gaittec 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good question: The headphone would cut the Spark speakers out like always; but, you would likely still get the line out to PA. I am a beta tester and I'll check this. If it works, the headphones would be like an IEM.

    • @Raskull
      @Raskull  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is correct. Just tested it out. Headphone out works fine with the ULooper. Speaker to the Spark Amp is turned off when something is plugged into it. The headphone/line out can be used to go to a powered speaker, like the Spark Cab or a Headrush, or to a PA system. Keep in mind that the Spark 40 does not have the ability to change the output to Line Out like the Mini and Go do.

  • @habakoski
    @habakoski 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I wonder what kind of signals the looper pedal loops when plugged in to the new multi-instrument amp, Positive Grid live. Just one channel, all the channels, line in playback?

    • @Raskull
      @Raskull  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great question. From what XSonic is telling me the Live outputs a combined feed to the USB out. So the ULooper would loop whatever was coming from all 4 input channels at the same time. They did say they were able to loop/overdub guitars, vocals and bass by recording them one at a time.

    I am also fortunate enough to be a Beta Tester for the ULooper. I've had success with most aspects of it, but I have a hard time with timing the loops. I seem to get a noticeable crossover gap between the end of one loop and the start of the next.
    It appears you have the timing down. So, I'll work on that, lol
    Thanks for this video.

    • @Raskull
      @Raskull  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching (and hopefully subscribing). Timing is everything in looping. That took 3 tries to get the loop down. And while that loop wasn't perfect, it was close enough. It avoided the gap and I think I even avoided the hard strum on the 1 count.

      @@RaskullIt shows me that the ULooper is capable, and that I need to do the work, lol. Beyond that, I find it a great solution for Spark users.
      I purchased the Airstep Spark Edition and attempted to use the Looper mode with Android, and it was glitchy at best. Too much going on between the Airstep and laptop.
      This ULopper is so much of a better solution.

    • @Raskull
      @Raskull  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jeffmaccaglia8998 I couldn't agree more. When I heard about the ULooper I was so happy to not have to use a table and stuff for looping. Now I use the Spark Control to change tones/effects and the ULooper to record practice loops. A near perfect practice solution. Especially with the Mini and Go.

    • @rotorav8r
      @rotorav8r 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm also in the test group and like you, struggling with the timing a bit. I've noticed some 'anomalies' in the playback as well but the XSONIC folks seem to be very active in addressing these issues. I haven't tried the latest firmware yet, but so far, (other than *my* limitations) it's working well with both my 40 and my Mini.

    • @Raskull
      @Raskull  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@rotorav8r If you have trouble with the timing I would recommend a metronome. I was in the music business and did lights for rock bands, so I count the beats in my head naturally. I still use a metronome from time to time and it really helped me improve my timing for starting and stopping loops on the 1. Also practice tapping your foot while playing a few bars before you record the loop. Tap close enough to the pedal and you can just pivot your foot for the 1 tap. Just be aware that sometimes we overcompensate our strums on the one when we press on the looper button.

    I really don't see how this is any different than any other looper. The flaw in the Spark is that you can't change effects... ie .... if you play a clean rhythm and want a distorted lead, it changes the rhythm to distorted.

    • @ohgahbriel

      That is the purpose of this pedal, it allows different effects to be played over top of each other. You can record a clean signal loop, then dub a distortion lead over top of it, then you can dub a delay or other effects over that. Unfortunately, this video dopesn't demonstrate this.

    • @JoeMinarik
