This is by far the most informative gaffing channel I've found and it's run by a professional gaffer! I can always count on Andrew to be as honest as possible. Thank you for doing this work and greetings from America.
Great review Andrew! Got the lights, but will be sending them back, too many little issues that are disturbing me : - the official 1500 Lux claim seems to be for 30cm instead of the standard 1m / 3m - not being able to set them on the legs on the ground safely - there are no 1/4" threads on either sides of the lamps which make a lot of rigging scenarios unnecessary complicated. - Phone app is a bit strange to be honest, a few issues as well - Not usable as practical in shot, looks cheap with the single LEDs showing up. Adding extra diffusion to the tube reduces the usable output too much. They are great value for the price though, if you don't mind the flaws - get them!
Thanks for sharing the light output spec and etc. I've looked up for this spec everywhere since this tube light was released, Godox website, TH-cam reviews and etc. All of them claim 1500Lux, but no distance info. What's the point of not disclosing this info, sigh! BTW Nanlite confirmed they will release new generation PavoTube this year, so looking forward to your view. I still remember your joke about the Nanguang mix wand :-)
I just saw these - I think these are the lights that will work for my needs until I can afford proper Astras or Mat Lights. Either way, this was a great review and really helped me make a decision to suit my needs.
What a fantastic review Andrew, thank you so much. I just received my quad pack today and I'm loving them. Super easy to use on the phone app and the remote and I'm going to now put them through my DMX desk, this is probably how I'll use them most of the time. The numbers are really impressive for such a cost effective unit. Thanks for the review
The ID setting in the 2.4G mode is to allow several controllers using the same channel control different sets of lights. It can be useful when there are several photographers working close together with separate sets of strobes and there's a limited set of channels usable (because of RFI). For example doing graduation portraits. It's not widely used by still photographers, though.
Love this channel and I know sweet FA about lights! Having said that, I did just order a 4 light kit of the TL120 and really hope you do a review. Thanks mate.
Very very useful stuff. I’ve been looking at these lately and had questions. I will be purchasing because of you! Thank you for an incredibly professional review, subscribed!
Very informative video. Thank you very much. I have a question about DMX. Do you use a special device to get them communicate with your dmx software. Do you plug the rj45 cable directly to your dmx control device. I missed that part.
Thank you Andrew for another thorough and comprehensive reveiw 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 I was really intrigued by these...... The other tube that has really piqued my interest is the SGC Prism - in particular because of Sidus Link compatibility. They also come in 60cm and 120cm variants and have dmx! I don't suppose you've got a review upcoming?
Many thanks Andrew, i did wonder if or when you'd review the lights. For me a small negative is that you can't seem to stand the lights up on their end with small set of tripod legs. They seem to attach to light stands and fixtures with all the different fixtures, however they do suffer form not being able to 'free stand'.
Like your review Q. I do own some Godox batteries ( buy it April 2021 ) and I do have issue with it ( never give me what they suppose to ) Do you have issue with the battery of the Godox TL60 or TL30? Thank you
Hi, thank you very much for your videos. They are awesome :) I'm desperately trying to add a Godox TL60 to Sidus Link Pro, but no profile works. Especially as I can't add Fixture Mode to Channel One. Do you have any idea or experience what I can do? :) Thank you!
Hi Andrew! Love the video. I emailed godox to ask for info but they said they don’t sell these. Strange. Anyway. We have 4 of these but have our first event we need to use dmx. What control box/other tech do you have/need to connect and run this?
Hi Andrew! Thanks for your content! It is absolutely brilliant as always! I also have a question for you as we are in the process of getting a large 2m x 2m or a 3m x 3m scrim from manfrotto but we are not quite sure on which stands to get with them. In studio we might get by with just c-stands but personally I think I'd prefer something with a bit more "girth". Would you have any recommendations? Use case would be in studio and on locations (in and outdoors). Cheers!
Thanks again Andrew! If you could, i would like to get your opinion on something. I've been wanting to buy a pair of entry level lightweight fixtures with a small footprint to help me in interview situations, mainly as fill or backlight; and also for adding some color to the background. Ever since i watchted your Pavotube related content i started saving up for the 2ft models, but now after watching this review i'm wondering if this is a better option. I noticed the app for the Godox tubes works much better than the one dedicated to the Pavotubes, and without need to buy a Wi-Fi adapter. In your opinion, is there a significant difference in light intensity between the Godox and the Pavotube when used in bi-color mode? I would also appreciate your view if you think there's something i'm overlooking, or if you think there is a better option than both of this products.
Hi, thanks for your explanation about DMX. I'm new to DMX, I'm on a Mac system, and I've tried a lot of apps. The only one that seems to work for me is Stagelight, but I can't use the functions for saturation, hue, exposure, and effects separately. The only thing I understand is that Godox uses some color palette to use their effects, or that's how it has worked for me. I hope I have managed to share my problem clearly. Can you help me please
Thanks so much for this review! I am debating between buying the 2-light or 4-light kit for the TL60. We already have full studio lighting (4x Godox VL300, 2x Aputure 120dii), but would likely use these for adding color to product shoots, background practicals, or fill lights on run and gun shoots. Knowing that, would you recommend getting the 4-light kit still, or going with the 2-light kit and waiting to get two of the 4' versions of the Godox that come out in the future?
Would you say the LEDs are more visible than the LEDs on the pavotubes, or is it down to exposure in camera? Just got some pavotubes and now thinking I should opt for these instead for the app functionality and DMX but hearing mixed opinions about the visibility of the leds.
The pavpavototubs are slightly more diffused. I would opt for these over the Pavo tubes because of the DMX, as I am a big user of DMX, but that would only be if they had longer tubes as an option because I would want matching 2ft and 4ft tubes. I have 16 Pavo tubes, they are reliable units so you will get a return on your investment. I also have 18 Astera tubes for my higher end clients and for shooting into.
@@gaffergear I'm sure Godox will bring out a 4 ft version of these, it's almost inevitable given the demand! It's a bit of a catch 22 for me because i'd love the app functions and dmx also but I use mine mainly as practicals o it's just down to if i can make the tubes look like one single source in shot, may have to rent some and do some tests. Cheers for the reply!
@@gaffergear Often I am shooting into them however they're more so in the background, perhaps bright exposure and/or dof will do the trick. I can see that at 14:35 at least the one on the left one is pretty much facing the camera and you can't see the diodes, that is the ideal look!
I use the c-800 for my reviews, but it would not be very good on set for exposure readings as you can't hold the button down for constant readings. I almost never take a spectrometer on set as they are dam expensive to get recalibrated if they get a solid knock. As I have learned the hard way
Great video, thank you. How did you have the light mounted on the stand. I contacted Godox and they do not sell the retainer clips, which is super weird. They always will get loose of time? I bet there is a way to do it with a gooseneck somehow? Thanks again for the video.
Pavotubes have a longer version, and a slightly more diffused cover so the LEDs don't show up as much if the camera is pointing into them. These have better colour render, better CCT accuracy, better phone app, and DMX.
@@BiGGMiCC not having a longer tube option is a big negative I can't look past, because I would want a matching system and most renters want a longer tube. Otherwise I would buy these over Pavo tubes.
Question: Can you turn the wireless functions completely off? I once worked a gig in a secured Navy facility, which meant we could not bring in ANYTHING that could send or receive via radio.
Do you think these will produce nice lighting on someone's face as well as the Nanlite pavotubes? I know the colour render is better on these but also he pavos are slightly more diffused. I have someone interested in buying my set of pavos and i'm debating selling them to buy these but slightly concerned if they'll be as pleasing on someones face as i sometimes use them for remote portraits.
@@gaffergear Such a hard dilemma as i use them as practicals as well... May have to keep the pavos. Thanks for the insight. Do you know if you'll be having a look at the new Nanlite FS line anytime soon? Curious to hear your thoughts.
