Pu-erh Tea Cake Pressing Factory

  • This video taken in Yunnan shows Pu-erh tea being pressed into cakes using a hydraulic press. Before making cakes, the tea is first processed (leaves are withered, heated to "kill the green" to kill the enzymes, rolled to break the leaves, and then dried in the sun). Then at this factory the tea is weighed, steamed, loaded into canvas bags and pressed into cakes. After pressing, the cakes are dried, and then wrapped.
There are other ways of making cakes including the older method of manually pressing/molding the tea between two stones.

I watched a lot of Jesse's tea house and wondered how a teacake is made. Thanks for uploading.

I've never been more interested in tea before. Good work.

I don't think this factory was famous. They did a rather impromptu demo for us, pressing teas we had brought in, so not everyone was suited up in gloves and hats. I have never seen a hair in my Bana Pu-erh teas (not pressed here). Glad to hear from a fellow Pu-erh lover - thanks for your comment.

Such a cool process!! I wonder if I could make small batch tea cakes like this with the local Ivan Chai that grows all over my state 🤔

Thanks for your kind words. I'll be posting one more video on tea trees including some ancient trees, ty di plantations and new, more organic/sustainable tea plantation methods.

While my short videos don't cover all the processing methods for all the Pu-erh teas, they are certainly true for many of them. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Holly cow, how close was that hydraulic press to that fellow's hand!
One second of distraction and that dude loses a hand.
I note few were hats, non wearing gloves. Well, that explains why I find thick black hairs in my beengs too often.
    Chinese Health and Safety?
Was this a famous name factory?
Still, you gotta love that tea ;-)
