  • On the last day of African Heritage Month recognizing the story of Africville - one of Nova Scotia’s most significant African Heritage sites - is more important than ever. The community of Africville has experienced several land expropriations often for the purpose of large transportation projects. The Africville Active Transportation Connections Project is our opportunity to revisit the transportation needs of the Africville community to establish improved access for all modes of travel.
The municipality is developing a planning study to determine the best Active Transportation connections between the Africville National Historic Site and the rest of the Halifax peninsula, with a focus of creating safer ways to access the site for everyone.
The goal is to conduct functional planning and produce preliminary designs to illustrate corridors and facilities to connect the Africville Park and Museum site to the municipality’s sidewalk and bicycle networks.
Please check out the video we produced in partnership with the Halifax Regional Municipality and Province of Nova Scotia to learn more about the project, or go to the project website at www.shapeyourcityhalifax.ca/africville-active-transportation

A walkway or a driving road from the corner of Northridge Road and Novalea Drive would be good as older people would find it impossible to walk down through the steep hill and trees under the A. Murray MacKay Bridge to enjoy Seaview Park. It isn't a long way but a hard work to get down to it. As well, some shops such as cafes in Seaview Park would be awesome as well as some flush toilets, etc. Even a nice boardwalk would be lovely for walkers young and old alike would be nice. Thank you for the video. Seaview Park is lovely and it's an escape from reality to go down there to walk around along the ocean.

Great stuff, thank you for highlighting this important part of Halifax history. I'd always heard about Africville, but never got the chance to visit when I lived in the city. Hopefully this project will help more people access and experience this historical site.

If there's one positive legacy from bad and often oppressive urban planning practices in the past - it's the redevelopment of some of those motor-transportation corridors. Think what happened when Seattle removed the Alaska Viaduct - obviously we're not talking about taking out all of those interchanges - but imagine all that space along those parkways actually being used as livable space. I hope that this active transportation plan inspires some more forward-thinking planning for the north end of the peninsula in the future!
