Graffiti can be beautiful. It is like a public art gallery. You can get some basic tags and some low-brow stuff, but you also get some genuinely beautiful pieces. The history of this stuff is fascinating, and you can get some beautiful artists like Banksy, Kieth Haring, Basquiat, KAWS, and the like who all got their start in this culture. It lights up a city and allows people to communicate and express themselves. I'm sure a lot of people recognize that little bird with the hat all around Halifax, and to me, at least, it's always a fun surprise to see him around. It's not intricate or complicated, but it's cute. Graffiti to me is one of the most interesting, beautiful, and uniting forms of art out there when it's done right.
I get it's a complex topic though. Like any artform, it can get ugly or even offensive, and there's really no room for that. If Halifax believes in the value of beautiful street art, they need to have free walls where artists can hone their skills and get an idea as to what makes a beautiful piece, and what isn't tolerated. Free walls keep people from vandalizing.

I like street murals since they really colour up the neighbourhoods they're located in. Graffiti art can be cool too provided that its not creepy or offensive. I once found white supremacist/Neo Nazi graffiti spraypainted onto a local high school and as a Jewish person it really freaked me out.

Yeah, because Zero Tolerance has worked so well in the drug war.
