If you are wondering why don't all AC condenser units have hard start kits or start capacitors, it's simply because manufacturers decided to cut costs. Back in the day, almost all AC units had a start capacitor. It does prolong the life of the unit but it will work with just a run capacitor (the silver one) so they decided to cut the "extra part" out. Just like cellphones used to have EMF blockers but since they were expensive, manufacturers decided to cut costs and stop putting them in.

I don’t know if I really needed a hard start capacitor, but had them install it based on their suggestion and because the compressor was 14 years old. I don’t really notice a difference after it was installed, but I hope it can extend the life of the compressor. Thank you for making this video.

The two wire hard start you have in your hand has a positive temperature coefficient thermistor under that top cap. Not a potential relay. It opens and closes due to temperature rise and fall, not an electromagnet

And just to add a reminder he said to make sure thers no coil behind the screw. 100 percent the number 2 thing i see with do it yourselfers. -Charge in the ozone-. Number 2 would be a 30 amp fuse for a 3 amp low voltage, now at the minimum you got a shorted wire in the outdoor unit and a fried transformer. At minimum

Love your videos! Very informative. Open Question for the HVAC Gurus...
I know Start performance improvement with a 5-2-1 Hard Start Capacitor Kit is not as great on SCROLL compressors, compared to RECIPROCAL types (many Y.T. vids show reductions of Inrush Amps by as much as 45% after installing a 5-2-1 Kit - I assume these are on Reciprocal compressor units).
At best, I've seen only about a 9% reduction in Inrush Amps on my Rheem 5-Ton Scroll Compressor aftter the 5-2-1 Kit was installed.
Is this a normal "improvement" to see when matching the 5-2-1 Hard Start kit (biggest capacitor) to a Scroll compressor, or should I be seeing lower Inrush results than this?
    Install Story/DETAILS, for anyone interested:
So, I just installed a CPS 5-2-1 CSRU3 Hard Start KIT in my 7YR old Rheem 5-ton SCROLL compressor/condenser unit, ( was running fine), but was slightly slower, buzzier, and metered with INRUSH Amps a bit above the specification on start-ups, recently.
L.R.A. specification for this 5-Ton split unit is: 152.9 Amps.
BEFORE 5-2-1 Install... Compressor "C" wire Metered INRUSH = 157.2 Amps.
AFTER 5-2-1 Install... Compressor "C" wire Metered INRUSH = 156.1 Amps.
Metered several "call for cooling" startups @ 150-155Amps INRUSH, AFTER Install: Best score was 147Amps INRUSH, with most starts hitting 152-155Amps.
Disappointed (thinking the 5-2-1 kit was a dud), I metered INRUSH again, a day later, on a few more start-ups - I found that my INRUSH was averaging between 142-146 Amps and the compressor has a more positive start, no buzzy wind-up; lighting in home doesn't dim during start, as before. All wiring terminals checked & re-verified, good.
(Same weather, thermostat settings, no other system changes since install day).
Odd - I'm unsure why unit seemed to perform better the following day.
    Thanks for reading!

Awesome explanation. My run capacitor is open circuit. Now that I know it is a run capacitor thanks to you, I can just replace it. I was looking for the start kit in my unit and didn't see one, even though it's shown in the schematic. Sounds like I could easily add it and improve things a bit.

  • @DanO181919

I’m just trying to understand in my head how this works....lol
Compressors are very specific about what size capacitors is will use. How is it that that the 3 in 1 Supco hard start kit will work for multiple different units that require different size caps to run the compressor. It’s like a one size fits all.

    • @benjamindees
      @benjamindees 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It's really only the run capacitor that needs to be a specific size. The start capacitor just needs to be 'big enough'. So once it is started, the start capacitor is taken out of the circuit by a relay.

    Hi Jay
I have a new installed an AC unit the inside and the out side about a year ago. However, a few days ago the condenser unit capacitor failed and unable to start the compressor . I had to replace the capacitor, now working fine. The unit is 3 tone /14 seer and 45/5 capacitor. I also noticed that it doesn’t have hard start capacitor; my question is would it helps to put hard start capacitor to maintain the life of compressor and for easy start. I always watch your video. I exceedingly appreciate you for every education you provided us with.

That happens to me twice with some plumbing issues, first I was charged a littlemore than $500 for replacing a water hose inside the house, and later above $300 for similar task outside the house, and I said never again. After that every single issue I have I google it, I watch as many video as needed and I fix it myself. Installing dishwasher, fixing plumbing issues, installing 240v circuit, adding new breakers in the electrical panel, troubleshooting AC problems, installing thermostat, installing inlet for generator, etc, etc, etc. My advice: if you feel that you can do it, then you are right. Just invest some time to learn about the topic and you will be ok.

  • @jotu173

OK... I need your advice about some specific things. As always, your fast reply is greatly appreciated.
    Facts:
My current unit is a 3 ton split Bryant (20ish yr old unit) that currently starts and runs flawlessy. The condenser has a reciprocating Bristol Compressor model # H25B32QABCA. when I looked up specs it said under ELECRICAL ACCESSORIES category it lists
    Start Relay: GE 3ARR3*3N* (*3P*)
    Start Cap: 88-108/250 (145-175/250) µF/volts
    Run Cap: 40/370µF/volts
On the fan motor it says 5 MFD / 370
The dual capacitor I have on the condenser is a Totalline P291-4054RS 440V MFD 40/5
I have ordered the 5-2-1 / 1-3 ton CSRU1 hard start kit and it says 88-108 MFD is its spec. It is NOT installed YET.
I think I know the answers to all of the below issues and simply want to cross reference with a pro so I do not accidentally blow up my condenser (or whatever) so here are some...
    Questions:
If there are no other capacitors (other than the 40/5 mfd dual) in the electrical connections area of the condenser does that mean...
    1) I do NOT currently have a start capacitor installed at all? In other words, it was only considered an accessory for the unit so it was not installed and the dual cap I have is only to run the compressor and the fan but has no additional "boost" for starting?
    If so...
    2) It isn't ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to have a start cap or hard start kit to run a condenser?
    3) Is my (soon to be installed) 5-2-1 Hard Start Kit adding / performing the function of the (currently missing) start cap?
    4) The 5-2-1 is a perfect match to the compressor spec. correct?
    5) Is there any other location (besides the electrical connection area) in the condenser where I might find a start cap (if it exists)?
    6) I saw or read a few different places that I should install a new Dual Capacitor (especially if Dual Capacitor is out of spec) at the same time I install thenew 5-2-1 kit or the new Hard Start Kit MAY slowly damage the compressor windings. Do you know if this is true (or anything about this)??
    7) In your opinion, are American made run capacitors worth the extra money (and are they any better for the longevity of HVAC equipment?) I can buy an Eastman (foreign made) Capacitor at H Depot for $6.80 or (USA made) AmRad for $28 or Titan HD (by Packard) for $16 ish.
    8) In your last message to me you said "I need to make another video where I compare the 5-2-1 and the hard start kit". I thought the 5-2-1 WAS a "hard start kit" but the way you referred to it in your message makes it sound like it isn't a hard start kit. A) Is the 5-2-1 a hard start kit? B) If not, then what is it? C) For my application, does it matter? please clarify.

Lol, this comment got spammed just for the sheer length of it. I appreciate the organized comment! I will answer them in the order asked. (to the best of my knowledge, I only have 6 years of experience so I wouldn't exactly call myself a veteran tech)
      1) If you look at your condenser wiring diagram it will probably say "start capacitor *may* be factory installed. That usually means it's not factory installed.
      2) No it is not absolutely necessary to have a start capacitor. Many companies stopped putting them in to save themselves a few bucks in manufacturing costs.
      3) Yes
      4) Yes
      5) It will normally be in the electrical section where the run capacitor and contactor reside. Big black cylinder typically hard to miss..
      6) I have never heard that before. But that's not a bad idea. An out of spec run capacitor should be replaced regardless if you are putting in a start capacitor or not.
      7) I don't think it matters too much but some people will claim that American made is better. The insides are pretty much the same. (You could buy two cheap ones and keep one as a spare for peace of mind)
      8) Sorry for the confusion. They are both hard start kits but one has a potential relay and the other does not. I usually refer to them as start capacitor and potential relay (5-2-1) and hard start kit (no potential relay). Is that technically correct? I really don't know, that's just what I call them.

This Subco uses a Positive Temperature Coefficient Relay (as stated on their website) not a Potential Relay. Not Good! Only use Hard Start Kits that use a true Potential Relay. The RectorSeal Kickstart (2 wire) and the 5-2-1 Compressor Saver (3 wire) hard start kits use a Potential Relay. I recommend the Kickstart (it uses 2 wires that connect to the Run Capacitor - HERM and COM). But the Compressor Saver is also good (3 wires with one connecting to the common / ground on the Contactor relay). They both work the same way - the Potential Relay detects the pickup voltage (back EMF). This causes the relay to disconnect the start capacitor when the compressor reaches about 75% speed (usually less than a second). Note: Supco does have hard start kits with a Mechanical Potential Relay (Models 3W1, 3W2, & 3W3).
