- The XFL was a football league that competed with the NFL in 2001.
On January 25th, 2018, which is just yesterday as I write this, they announced their 2020 return. This video focuses mostly on their initial run and the ways they were able to differentiate themselves from the NFL, but also addresses the return announcement and the changes they're making to avoid another failure.

My biggest issue was that it started right after the NFL season ended. I had football fatigue by then. If they're smart, they'll make it start in late spring when everyone is eager for football to start up again and end it shortly before the NFL season starts. Maybe then, people will be fatigued, care less about the NFL and tank their ratings.
During the main NFL season would probably be his best option. Instead of Sundays have it on Saturdays. Make people have NFL fatigue by the time Sunday rolls around.

Do you watch fights every Sunday for 3-9 hours straight? Maybe an additional 3-6 if you toss in Thursday night football and Monday night football for a total of 15 hours? Then toss in the hours of watching highlights and commentary? I doubt it.

The scramble was great. If one play with only one other player causes such an injury to knock you out for the rest of the season you should not be playing anyhow. Go join the no fun League where if you look at the quarter back like you want to hurt him will get you a penalty.
A better way would be to put two balls on the 25. A player from each team starts from the 50. The first to scoop and score wins 'the toss'. There's a competitive element with limited risk of injury.

The XFL should start by putting teams in cities with no NFL team (San Diego, St. Louis, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, etc.). It wouldn't guarantee success, but it's a good start.

Nick Bleker So, a couple of things that may make me come of as a bit of a dick for correcting minor mistakes.
1. It was actually only WWWF for 16 years. Founded in 1963, name changed in 1979
2. Vince Sr was still in control when the name change happened. Vincent K McMahon didn't gain control of the company until 1982.
3. Vince Sr didn't step down. The younger McMahon bought it from his father.
The XFL is returning in 2020!

The timing is a lot better this time with how frustrated people are feeling towards the NFL in recent years. I don't know if it work but it's now or never. Maybe someone else can get the license to make XFL video games if it's a success and we won't be stuck with the EA NFL monopoly.

Paying people less and increasing the violence by no fair catch = injured players with less money to pay for injuries. Maybe good for corporations but no so good for players.

2001: NFL tickets are overpriced and the league is not competitive.
2018: New England in the superbowl every year, code pink, players
taking a knee and NFL tickets are criminally overpriced.
Jimmy Sanders still no substance. The relaunch is built entirely on the vocal minority of people who probably aren't actual fans anyways. One of the talking points is "games being too long." Granted, if it's a blow out game it feels like an eternity, but in the end real sports fans aren't complaining about the game length. Half time is a fifteen minute break normally, that's not even enough time in the stadium to pee and buy a beer in the line presuming it's a crowd of 50k plus attendance.
Nobody with any "criminal" background, I do agree NFL has allowed certain players in the past with domestic abuse records continue to play, but in all the league has black balled a number of players. Should people get second chances? Sure, but on a tight leash, and NFL has been making statements in suspensions and fines and we'll ask repeat offender policies. Now if some guy gets a charge when they're young and dumb or maybe just a bad night of decisions, I don't think that should exclude them from playing football and most learn their lessons the first time something like that happens. Even do, you're getting alpha males to play a violent sport, there's going to be some run its with the law at some point while drinking with a certain number of them.
Either way, my "rant" will conclude with this, it will be a third rate league. Players who don't make the practice squad in NFL will look north to CFL before banking on XFL, some will take the gamble, but based on the initial 100 million to start up the league, you can bet the pay will be peanuts and there's instability, where CFL as well as arena football at least offer a little bit more stable paychecks, but there will be people playing, keeping their dream alive, they're just not that good. How many people are tuning into Tulsa vs Toledo on Saturday's? The answer is not many, because the quality is not there and actual sports fans want to watch the best play the best, not "the other guys."

Just watched the first Battlehawks game and it was pretty good. Had decent football(Not as good as the NFL but college level or better). The players were pretty good(Our kicker made a 48yd field foal). As an STL fan I'm glad we have football in this city again. It's great football to have during the offseason.

I watched some XFL, who didn't? But after listening to Jesse Ventura continually bellow "WOW!" after one mediocre player tackled another mediocre player, i lost interest. I bought a couple of miniature XFL footballs because I knew the league wasn't going to last, and I still have those somewhere.

Decetop I was about to say... There's a view that one "level" of sport is higher/better than the other, and that the best of the lower level cannot beat a middling team fro the level "above" it. The only time it's even questioned is when a team from a higher level is uncommonly horrible, which is why we get the "can Alabama beat the Browns?" think-pieces every year.
The other thing I remember about the XFL was that its players - instead of their name on the back of their uniform - were told to place a stupid-ass nickname.

I vividly remember the XFL. He Hate Me's WWE style promos, the Scramble, all the flashy shit was way more exciting to ten-year-old me than the regular games my dad watched. We actually had a t-shirt for every team in the league. My dad still has a signed Memphis Maniax football. It's actually a really fond memory from my childhood.
I’m interested, let’s see if they can learn from their mistakes and vastly improve from what they did in past and put out an exiting new football league. I’m not against more football after the NFL season ends, hopefully the XFL can provide that and not be a giant flop all over again.

I get what you're trying to say but in all honesty I believe there isn't a lesson they could've learned. They did exactly what they were planning, and got a decent viewership in their first week for it, but it plummeted almost immediately. Now that the plan seems to be to throw out the "extreme", I can't imagine this XFL surviving more than a single season either.
The only possible things I can imagine they'd improve on would be talent level (which, even at best, would be vastly inferior to the NFL), coaching (same shit as before), and honestly they should change the name. Xtreme Football League sounds gimmicky, and if there isn't even a gimmick anymore, what's the point?
I'm not even remotely interested in sports, but having two guys dive to grab the ball first is waaay cooler than just a coin flip

So do I. I also have jerseys from the Outlaws, Enforcers, and Maniax. I played fantasy football on Sandbox that year. I studied up and drafted 3 of the 8 starting QBs. Sandbox didn't get it either. They had 10 team divisions for a league that only had 8 teams! I went 9-1 and won the league easily. I know it was crappy football, but it WAS entertaining for sure

Pentium yes I did know that. Did you know they had very strict rules about advertising due to the world wildlife foundation and that was breached. Calling it by its name doesn't make it wrong. Calling it by its former name doesn't make anyone smarter.
I disagree Mike. The XFL needs the flashiness. That's the only reason people remember it at all. If you want an example of the XFL without the flashiness just look at the UFL. It failed because it was just not interesting. You need gimmicks if you want a league with inferior players to be competitive. For a comparison look at the Arena Football League. It's still around (although struggling) because it offers something unique and different. There is no way the XFL can compete with the NFL without being gimmicky. Also comparing the XFL to the ABA is not really a good comparison. XFL just does not have the money to steal top talent from the NFL the same way the ABA stole talent from the NBA. A better comparison for the ABA is the AFL which arguably inspired the ABA. The AFL could compete financially with the NFL and I just can't see that happening with the XFL. We are just not in a climate where a potential top draft pick from the NFL would choose the XFL instead. The AFL also had a more exciting high scoring type of game compared to the NFL which mirrors the ABA and NBA.
However I do agree that the gimmicks of the fair catch elimination and the scramble need to be eliminated in any possible XFL revival due to player safety and all that.

I wrote a paper for my English class in 7th grade as to why the XFL was a bad idea for basically the reasons you explained. Hopefully, it puts on a better product this time and succeeds. We'll have to see.

Maybe initially but if it starts taking off they will have the funds to start luring away top talent from the NFL and out of the college ranks. The USFL failed but they started doing exactly that. Question is can XFL sustain though, and I think they have a chance. One of the things that I think may doom both leagues is the whole CTE issue. The NFL is killing itself right now, and the XFL might be able to leech off the dying corpse, but the CTE may kill them both off altogether.

I would watch the XFL, would still watch the NFL. Who doesn't like year-round football? I don't see why the NFL fans are against it, the XFL may be good.
The XFL football with the red and black colors was awesome. You could grip that ball and fling it a long distance.
As a dedicated fan of the Dallas Cowboys, I have to say that if there’s any time to compete with the NFL, it’s now. The NFL has gotten to the point where they think they can do no wrong, and as result have made bad decision after bad decision.
1. They’ve completely failed on nearly every major disciplinary action (Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, Tom Brady, Ezekiel Elliott, etc).
2. The instant replay has become excessive, to the point of dissecting every major play, which massively slows the game down.
3. The officiating has been very subpar, in part because they just now switched to full time refs.
4. The anthem protest, whatever you think of it, should have been addressed instantly instead of waiting a year and letting the fucking president start chiming in.
5. Thursday Night Football was a terrible idea and should never have been a mainstay. It oversaturates the market with football (seriously, including high school and college, it’s 4 straight days of football. Even for people like me, that’s too much). Plus it opens up a lot more players to injury.
6. They’ve been fucking a lot of cities over via either relocation or demands for a new stadium.
7. They are the biggest hypocrites you can possibly imagine when it comes to player safety.
8. Also on that note, injuries have been happening at a far quicker rate in the past few years, which has had a big negative affect on the quality of play. That’s not entirely the league’s fault, but the NFL does put major limits on the physical contact players can have during the off-season, which makes their bodies unprepared for the contact that happens during a game.
9. We now have no idea what the fuck a catch is. The NFL’s narrow definition has made common sense irrelevant.
So yeah, if the NFL is gonna have a competitor, now is the time to do it. The NFL’s ratings are dropping and the public opinion has started to sour. I don’t know if I’ll watch the XFL, but the fact that I might should say a lot.

Michael it is, if your shut you won’t have a good contract.
Heres how I think they should be paid. The winning team should make their regular single game salaries and the losing teams should have to split from a pool of the highest paid player. So if a player is paid $1million a game, the whole team should have to split that. The winning team of the Superbowl (and the other bowl games) should get their regular pay and the losing team should actually get nothing. This way the losing teams get something, but not as much and this will make them train harder and the winning team has bragging rights. The money saved can go toward lowering ticket prices to show they appreciate their fans.
This can be done with all sports. There are losing teams that make tons of money still.
I would say pay the players as they do on American Ninja Warrior, where the winner is the only one that gets paid, but I know that wouldn't work so this is the second best idea. They could have fewer games in a season, to let the players work other jobs?

I barely know what the NFL is. It's not big in Europe, it's some obscure thing you MIGHT have heard about and it's always on 2AM so very few people watch it

During the first XFL go around I lived in B'ham Alabama. The entire state doesn't have any major league sports teams. When the XFL launched B'ham had a team called the B'ham Bolts. I went to 2 games including the inaugural game of the team. The first game had a crowd of about 40,000 fans at Legion Field. I really enjoyed the games and they were competitive games.
I think what killed it was the rush and the WWF feeling on TV. I watched the first game on TV at a friends house. I enjoyed it and I normally don't enjoy football. But after I while I got a feeling they were rigged games somehow. I think this go around might be better because of the political crap in football. The kneeling players who aren't being punished is really pissing off a lot of fans.

I remember being pumped for the XFL when it was being promoted at the time because it seemed then that the NFL was penalizing players for too many technicalities like celebrating in the end zone, etc. It was cool to see the first game but the action became difficult to follow and I stopped watching around the second half figuring they probably need to work through the bugs out over the next couple of weeks before getting to the hard hitting football I was expecting. Costas hit the nail on the head for why it failed. Also, they started focusing too much on sex appeal. Even as a teenager at the time, I felt they were focusing too much on sex and too much on the cheerleaders, even going so far as to hype that during a game we'd get a peek in the cheerleaders' dressing room. It became too WWF/WWE for it's own good.
There is one thing the nfl can't do, and that is spring football. If you give football fans some cheap amateur football in the spring people will watch it.
I only want the XFL to succeed so that 2K Sports will make another football game.

That ship sailed. Remember All-Pro 2K8? They basically re-skinned NFL2K5, it was eye-rollingly bad. No reason to velieve they wouldn't try that stunt for something as inglorious as a game for a gimmick league. It'd be more worth their time to do an LFL game. At least they can sell that using titillation.
I think it'll be way more of a success this time around. They're taking their time, learning from their mistakes, making it more football and less WWF and Football is just way bigger than it was then. Also the addition of Nicknames rather than last names is a pretty cool idea.
Same with "the scramble" I'm not sure how it could cause any serious (or even minor) injuries but I think it's a neat concept. It would give an incentive for teams to train fast runners and pit them against each other for the ball. Can't wait to see what the XFL holds next year

I haven't watched Monday Night Games since it switched over to ESPN. I did like ESPN's Sunday Night Games after watching *Chris Berman's HE....COULD....GO....ALL....THE....WAY* highlight show. I stopped watching NBC's Sunday Night games long before the kneeling (boycotting NFL). I HATE Chris Collinsworth. Dreadful.

XFL All Access at halftime was actually really neat. I couldn't leave my couch at the half because I loved listening to the coaches and coordinators going over game strategies!

Brian Wyters Yeah. It was bad because there was too much wrestling storyline stuff. There is a video on the Wrestling with Wregret channel that explains it. I remember that a guy got injured during the first scramble. It did have some good parts, minus the bad cheerleaders.

Unpopular opinion: Bringing back the XFL now (well, in 2020) is a good idea!!! 2001 was not the right time for it, but now is. With all the scandals and political bullshit going on with the NFL right now there is an opening for a new league. I'll totally go to XFL games. I just hope they can attract good players; that's my big worry.
