    Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases in which the optic nerve is damaged leading to irreversible loss of vision. In most cases, this damage is due to an increased pressure within the eye.
    The eye produces a fluid called aqueous humor which is secreted by the ciliary body into the posterior chamber - a space between the iris and the lens. It then flows through the pupil into the anterior chamber between the iris and the cornea. From here, it drains through a sponge-like structure located at the base of the iris called the trabecular meshwork and leaves the eye. In a healthy eye, the rate of secretion balances the rate of drainage.
    In people with glaucoma, the drainage canal is partially or completely blocked. Fluid builds up in the chambers and this increases pressure within the eye. The pressure drives the lens back and presses on the vitreous body which in turn compresses and damages the blood vessels and nerve fibers running at the back of the eye. These damaged nerve fibers result in patches of vision loss, and if left untreated, may lead to total blindness.
    There are two main types of glaucoma: open-angle and angle-closure.
    Open-angle glaucoma , or chronic glaucoma, is caused by partial blockage of the drainage canal. The angle between the cornea and the iris is "open", meaning the entrance to the drain is clear, but the flow of aqueous humor is somewhat slow. The pressure builds up gradually in the eye over a long period of time. Symptoms appear gradually, starting from peripheral vision loss, and may go on unnoticed until the central vision is affected. Progression of glaucoma can be stopped with medical treatments, but part of vision that is already lost can not be restored. This is why it's very important to detect signs of glaucoma early with regular eye exams.
    Angle-closure glaucoma, or acute glaucoma, is caused by a sudden and complete blockage of aqueous humor drainage. The pressure within the eye rises rapidly and may lead to total vision loss quickly. Certain anatomical features of the eye such as narrow drainage angle, shallow anterior chamber, thin and droopy iris, make it easier to develop acute glaucoma. Typically, this happens when the pupil is dilated and the lens is stick to the back of the iris. This prevents the aqueous humor from flowing through the pupil into the anterior chamber. Accumulation of fluid in the posterior chamber presses on the iris causing it to bulge outward and block the drainage angle completely. Acute angle-closure glaucoma is a medical emergency and requires immediate attention.

    I have glaucoma myself and I'm 24. I'm on for eye drops for my eye pressures 2 be controlled. I have to see my glaucoma doctor every 4 months to make sure everything is okay. I have had almost every glaucoma test and I have experienced this condition through part of my life. Glaucoma for me is not that bad it's just challenging because I have to make sure that I don't run out of my eye drops because then my pressure will go up. I can tell anyone with glaucoma that your attitude determines how bad you want your glaucoma to ruin your life. I choose to have a positive attitude towards living with glaucoma and helping other people with it.

It looks like you are on 4 eye drops. Usually when a patient requires so many drops to control their glaucoma, the doctor will recommend surgery to control your IOP. After the surgery, you will likely not need to use as many drops, and in some cases no drops are required after surgery. I would ask your eye doctor about it.

    My father has had it since he was 25, he's now 52 and the situation has gotten worse in the last two years. He luckily got surgery from one of the best glaucoma doctors here. He described it to me like some of you guys did, he saw white dots and had a blurry vision, his left eye sadly isn't working anymore and he's completely blind in that eye. His right eye is much better but not good either. The surgery he had was the MIGS one (Mini Invasive Glaucoma Surgery, I believe?) where they put a microscopic tube in his eye and changed his crystalline and got rid of his Myopia too. The first day he described his vision as totally white as if he had a lamp right into his eye. Then, after like 10 days, he started panicking because he couldn't see in his right eye anymore either. He rushed to the hospital and luckily recovered and came back home after like 10 days (One of his vessels exploded and he had an eye hemorrhage. Luckily, all of the blood got adsorbed and the vision returned.) After like a month he started saying his vision is getting (a little) better, but sometimes still had the flashing white. It's now been over one month and a half since the surgery and his vision goes by days. Sometimes good, sometimes bad.. He has to get a visit at the clinic where the specialist works to see if he can use glasses or he has to wait. He went back to work but obviously he can't do the things he did because it's on the computer and he would only hurt his eye, but he goes there and does everything he can on paper. I wanted to let you guys know my experience (well, my father's) to see if someone has had something similar. I started getting more information lately, so I know more about this disease and can tell when something is wrong. I have known today that Glaucoma is hereditary and I'm scared I have it too. But, luckily, the last eye visit I did ,(one or two months ago, I don't exactly remember), I didn't have high eye pressure, so I know atleast for now that my vision is still safe. I am so sorry for everyone that has this disease, it's really nothing to joke about, as you may have it and you don't know it. Please y'all be cautious about your eyes and don't take it easy, a lot of people I know have had this disease and some of them are now blind because of it. Don't wait until it gets worse, get surgery done asap so you can prevent more permanent damage. Stay safe and healthy! 🥰

    We often use our eyes to equalize intraocular pressure, but after injuries and surgery, you can't do that...
    You just can't cure glaucoma with drops, you need to change your lifestyle...
    The pressure in the eye is increased due to the spongy Trauber network clogged with fibrous blood, which removes 75% fluid into the Helmet channel. This often happens after getting blood due to eye injuries, or eye surgery, sugar, malnutrition and... etc..
    There is more fluid entering the eyes than leaving....
    Which really helps!
    It is necessary to improve fluid drainage, but how?:
    1 Improve rheology (fluidity...) diet (for example, diabetics), cans to improve lymph flow, leeches are the best... and so on
    2 Improve blood vessels (contrast shower!!!, vitamins C and much more ...)
    3 Mechanically help to remove fluid from the eyes (massage around the eyes to drain lymph ..., alternately squeezing- squeezing out excess fluid if you can not rub your eyes due to surgery or injury, etc.) ...
    Everything is correct. But not all of them... I'll add it... In order for the blood to be "liquid", proper nutrition is necessary!!!, without excess sweet, flour, potatoes, etc.
    A good outflow is helped by proper MASSAGE of the eyes and adjacent areas and neck. But it also helps a lot to alternately close your eyes!!! An eye to squeeze out!!! excess fluid from the eyes into the lymph via the trabecular network (spongy tissue is clogged with fibrous blood after surgery or injury), into the Helmet canal.
    Massage of lymphatic vessels draining fluid near the eyes and ears, as well as from the entire head helps to prevent and treat GLAUCOMA!!!
    A daily contrast shower helps, or at least applying hot wet or cold wipes to the eyes to train the elasticity of the vessels around the eyes, and the entire head. All this prevents GLAUCOMA, which is almost impossible to cure in any other way. Only if you put leeches to thin the blood. Regular cupping and cupping (hijams) also help to improve the rheology of blood and lymphatic fluid.

      my mom works with most of the pediatric and geriatric patients at an opthalmologist's (sp) practice and she uses the analogy of a chick hatching from an egg to describe the pressure build up. It really seems to resonate with most of her patients because it's not gory like exploding eyeballs and it's something we're all familiar with. I wish more people in the medical field could understand and acknowledge the value of teaching a patient to understand their condition. People don't miss pain medication because they know what will happen if they don't take it, but not everyone understands what will happen if they don't take their meds for conditions like this

      Take your eye drops they prescribed. That is thee most important thing! Always use them, every day. Whether your on one drop every night before bedtime, or 1 drops 2x a day. That's the treatment. Drops! There are laser treatments, but the drops are the main thing and should keep the pressures down. Never let yourself run out. Be sure to get refills before your last bottle if you end up getting 3 bottles at a time. Good luck.

    Athwal Eye care provides medication, laser therapy and surgery for the Glaucoma.Medicated eye drops are the most common way to treat glaucoma. These medications lower your eye pressure either by slowing the production of aqueous humor or by increasing its outflow from the eye.For laser therapy a laser treatment called selective laser trabeculoplasty, (SLT), is often used to treat glaucoma.Surgery is another way of treatment.

    I have a question because I am not sure what to do when the time comes, my dog had glaucoma in both eyes, one eye has been removed because it was too late before we noticed and it was causing him severe pain, the other eye is being medicated and has been stable for about two years now, the dog is 13-14 years old and other than his eye and some mysterious tumor in his mouth is in good health (no joint problems, dementia, severe gingivitis, or weight problems) inevitably when the condition of his eye becomes bad enough to cause severe pain again we are planning to put him to sleep because the dog would be elderly, in pain and the vet bills are high and also because if the mysterious black tumor in his mouth turns out to be cancer there is no point in spending thousands of dollars. but other than these issues he is in totally great shape. now I have seen dogs before where the owner had obviously neglected treatment for their dog with glaucoma and the dog despite having a huge unsightly bulging cloudy eye exploding out of its head seemed totally happy and full of energy, what if we were to do the same thing and just do nothing if the eye drops stopped working? how long does it take for the pain to go away? is it better to just leave the eye and let him be in pain for a few months and then let him live the rest of his life happily or it is better to put him to sleep??

    • @jessicacooley9798
      @jessicacooley9798 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The eye drop should be working. If they aren't the vet can switch the drops. There are many more they can try, or add to the one currently. I get it is very expensive to care for a dog, but that's part of being a responsible owner. How would you feel if someone asked if they could stop helping you if you were going to be in pain and it'll lead to complete blindness? It's the same thing. The dog has one eye, there isn't a way for you to let it go and not treat the eye with glaucoma and it be happy the rest it's life. The dog is old, the chance of it adapting to being completely blind, is not high. My dad and stepmom, let their poor dog stay miserable for so long. It ran into things hard sometimes, it cried and whined. It broke my heart! But it had many other problems. Sorry so long. But, it is not okay to let it go, the doggy have a coupe more years left or may have way less, so why not take great care of it, spoil it the best you can, so it can really be happy and loved the rest of its remaining life? You don't want to see it tortured in pain or blind fully. Especially if you say it's heathy besides the glaucoma. Good luck, and I hope you really think about my advice.

    serious question out of curiosity - can your eye actually...not "explode" but..."explode" from the excess pressure? I guess it would probably more disintegrate or rupture

      No the eyeball will not explode.You aren't understanding where the pressure is.It being fluid pressed against the nerves causing vision loss.

      I doubt you are an eye doctor, I'm an unsure of you "weird cow" is, unless the previous person who posted the comment changed their name, if not then I am shocked at the name calling. Anyhow, the fact that you are a so called doctor giving medical advice on a patient who is not yours, on a public forum is extremely unethical and a violation of your oath. Also, the fact you told the person that it's a slow process and they don't have to rush to an Ophthalmologist's office is scary! No, they do need to go ASAP. They need to be seen and have the appropriate tests, pictures and exam done to evaluate the type and how advanced it is,. The pressures checked etc. to prevent vision loss if none has been already! Do you know how many patients I have seen that says they wished they had come to our office sooner, or that they didn't know, and thankful they came bc they lost an eyeball already, or most vision in one eye already. The optometrist should of referred the person to an Ophthalmologist, if not seek one out on your own. Better safe than sorry.

      Probably because a possible symptom of glaucoma is cataracts. A lot of people confuse the two. Cataracts are when your eyes get cloudy

    • @ASid-yj1og
      @ASid-yj1og 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Nicole B Garcia - It seems you have also confused the two. Glaucoma does not cause cataracts. Cataracts is the opacification of eye lens. Glaucoma is damage to the optic nerve through increased eye pressure. Acute angle closure glaucoma does however cause blurry vision through a mechanism that causes the cornea to become filled with fluid.
