Spanish member of Broski Nation here. Generally, I’d say “baraja” is more commonly used to refer to a deck of cards outside of play, like to say you brought one to play, and “mazo” is what you call the main deck of upside-down cards you draw from within an actual game. In reality though, they’re fully synonyms and whichever word you choose to use might just depend on your mood. Love the accent, gurl, those “s” sounds are on POINT.

When Brittany posted about interviewing Hozier, I knew it was going to be good. Interviewers often talk about what he's working on now and Take Me to Church. That's usually it. 44:23 hi Brittany! native spanish speaker and multilingual translator here! :) i'm happy to help you with your doubts about the language on playing cards. so you were extremely close to a term we do use in spanish speaking countries very often to refer to decks of cards which you thought of as "tarjetas de juego" the correct way to say that direct translation would be "cartas para jugar" the word "tarjeta(s)" is almost exclusively used for bank cards and sometimes the ones you use on special ocassions to send invitations for weddings or birthdays like "tarjetas de invitación" it has to do with the shape of the card itself, so "tarjeta" would apply to bank cards (debit/credit) by textboox definition, but also to rectangular shaped paper or thin cardboard objects with usually pointy corners. when it comes to playing cards, the corners are rounded so it doesn't fit the casual definition for the use of the word "tarjeta", so "carta" is the correct one to apply in this scenario. as for the word positioning, you have to always keep in mind spanish is very different for sentences and naming objects with multiple words or adjectives, so for "hand cream" you wouldn't say "crema de mano" (al though, it is roughly correct) because the correct way to describe it doesn't follow direct english-to-spanish translation rules so you have to place the word "para" (for) in these sort of cases to clarify the intended use of said object, so you'd say "crema PARA manos" and for the card thing, it would be "cartas PARA jugar" and you'd be tecnically spot on! :) the word that shows up on the translators is "mazo" which when applied to cards means a stack of them, so it's understood as a deck :) "baraja" is more of a spanish & centro-american thing and people don't really use it in SOUTH latin countries to casually refer to cards on a family reunion per say, but you had the right idea and just needed those tiny tweaks to nail it! i recommend you use "mazo de cartas" as it's the most common way to refer to a deck of cards, but if not, "naipes" or "cartas para jugar" would do! hope this was useful, queen! loved the pod as always 🩷 +edit ! i'm south - latin american, so the *baraja* comment can and should be corrected ! it is correct and common in centro-american countries as well, all though not universal, as in Chile and some neighbouring, for example, it's not really used but still understood. the wonderful broski-nation citizens in the comments were kind enough to point it out, and have made it clear it's common in countries like Mexico and the Dominican republic. 💞

the interesting thing about the folk revival that's happening now is that the music feels different. i think the pandemic brought that longing for the things that bring us back to our roots. Folk, bluegrass, country, flamenco, etc. are being revisited with very modern perspectives. a movement that began pre pandemic but that gained lots of traction during and post pandemic. the themes in that music also feel really reflexive and particular in a let’s get to the point sort of way. I think both Noah and Olivia are part of that movement in the sense that the way they approach themes is very direct and confrontational, while sonically drawing inspiration from that late 00s/early 10’s place in music. this very vulnerable way of writing is a trend in music i feel we’ll continue to see while artists release their pandemic and post pandemic projects (lana’s latest album felt like the epitome of this). even the 80’s disco/synth pop revival we’ve been seeing for the last couple of years with dua lipa, the weeknd, with beyonce’s new album all feel part of a wider movement of reminiscing on what feels (to us now) like more hopeful times.
I didn’t really know anything about Hozier until I started watching your podcasts and I decided to give his new album a listen a few days ago… When I tell you that his music resonated with my SOUL!! I’m so happy you introduced me to him, I feel like he is gonna be one of my new favorites😭🫶🏽
I think Phoebe is one of those artists you can’t place in a genre without her overlapping into another. One of the most beautiful things about her music is that she can make music that is “palatable” for the masses while also not compromising her artistic view or her intentions. She appeals to so many people in our age group who long for nostalgia while also trying to remain hopeful for things to get better . I could talk about Ms.Bridgers or Boygenius for forever
this is why it irks me so much when people try to box her and boygenius into the category of like "sad girl music" because they are So much more than that, yk?
i could write essays upon essays about phoebe brigers. her genre is unlisted and un categorized just like you said. her creative idea of self discovery in every single song is so beautiful and she has a amazing way of talking about horrible things with beautiful melodies and makes us, or at least me, feel okay without knowing exactly what we want or who we are. her idea of self discovering is simply who we are and the habits we develop off of others. its beautiful
the way i was responding to the entire music monologue lmfao binch we could GET INTO ITTTT! i feel like phoebe & boygenius have carved out their own genre that is at its heart alt/indie yes, but their lyrics are so solemn & heart wrenchingly honest that it can be almost romantic & kinda punk? they also have such a rock background & knowledge of music theory that is ASTONISHING! julien baker especially. it's hard to categorize them, but i feel like indie punk or emo punk is the direction it's heading
Brittany mentioning Dayseeker just made my day. I've loved their music since high school and got to see them twice over the summer and they put on one of the best shows I've seen. Rory is one of the best vocalists in rock today.
Noah khann might have reached the point of being one of my favorite artists of all time. And I love that he’s so real. Everything he says in songs is art and everything he posts on twitter is hilarious. I just love him to death
The way that Brittany was trying to look up how to pronounce wyvern, and instead went on a tangent of translating "playing cards" in Spanish towards the end 😭

44:23 hi Brittany! native spanish speaker and multilingual translator here! :) i'm happy to help you with your doubts about the language on playing cards.
so you were extremely close to a term we do use in spanish speaking countries very often to refer to decks of cards which you thought of as "tarjetas de juego" the correct way to say that direct translation would be "cartas para jugar" the word "tarjeta(s)" is almost exclusively used for bank cards and sometimes the ones you use on special ocassions to send invitations for weddings or birthdays like "tarjetas de invitación" it has to do with the shape of the card itself, so "tarjeta" would apply to bank cards (debit/credit) by textboox definition, but also to rectangular shaped paper or thin cardboard objects with usually pointy corners.

the word that shows up on the translators is "mazo" which when applied to cards means a stack of them, so it's understood as a deck :)
"baraja" is more of a spanish & centro-american thing and people don't really use it in SOUTH latin countries to casually refer to cards on a family reunion per say, but you had the right idea and just needed those tiny tweaks to nail it!
i recommend you use "mazo de cartas" as it's the most common way to refer to a deck of cards, but if not, "naipes" or "cartas para jugar" would do! hope this was useful, queen! loved the pod as always 🩷
+edit ! i'm south - latin american, so the *baraja* comment can and should be corrected ! it is correct and common in centro-american countries as well, all though not universal, as in Chile and some neighbouring, for example, it's not really used but still understood. the wonderful broski-nation citizens in the comments were kind enough to point it out, and have made it clear it's common in countries like Mexico and the Dominican republic. 💞

She appeals to so many people in our age group who long for nostalgia while also trying to remain hopeful for things to get better . I could talk about Ms.Bridgers or Boygenius for forever
this is why it irks me so much when people try to box her and boygenius into the category of like "sad girl music" because they are So much more than that, yk?
brittany always yelling into the void fixes me
No because why is it better than meds
I fucking love this human
HEALED, I‘m telling you
it heals me
Her screaming to Bojack Horseman was so good
i could write essays upon essays about phoebe brigers. her genre is unlisted and un categorized just like you said. her creative idea of self discovery in every single song is so beautiful and she has a amazing way of talking about horrible things with beautiful melodies and makes us, or at least me, feel okay without knowing exactly what we want or who we are. her idea of self discovering is simply who we are and the habits we develop off of others. its beautiful
MY JAW DROPPED IM SO GLAD YOU MADE ME DO THE BREATHING EXERCISES
brittany coming out as goth and immediately doing a chills impression, i feel so seen and so heard and i love her more than ever
This feels like I'm on facetime with my best friend
something about the way brittany sits in a room and screams at the invisible audience about celebrities that just makes me feel warm inside
Me hitting my pen every time she tells me to inhale/exhale is how I show my love and support for Brittany
😂😂😂
LMFAOOOO
I would pay massive amounts of money for Brittany to corner me at a house party and talk to me about literally anything 😂
the way i was responding to the entire music monologue lmfao binch we could GET INTO ITTTT! i feel like phoebe & boygenius have carved out their own genre that is at its heart alt/indie yes, but their lyrics are so solemn & heart wrenchingly honest that it can be almost romantic & kinda punk? they also have such a rock background & knowledge of music theory that is ASTONISHING! julien baker especially. it's hard to categorize them, but i feel like indie punk or emo punk is the direction it's heading
Never have I been more excited for a podcast episode in my life
No one deserves to interview Hozier more ❤ a true fan of his art, so happy for you!!
Brittany yelling at… no one… Is everything 👏🙌🏻
This podcast literally feels like sitting down with a friend talking about the most out of pocket things and I love it 😂😂
we’re all sitting down on the couch together
Brittany just screaming at herself and her asides really make me feel normal and I love that- we all gotta monologue that's the rule
I just love him to death
give us the tune names
the hozier hive is actually a good fandom name considering he actually keeps bees
He does?? And I thought I couldn't love him more...
I cant imagine being able to interview an artist i deeply admire and respect im literally so happy for you💗
When she slams on the table, the bobble heads dance and Ghost stands strong and stoic and that is beautiful
The way that Brittany was trying to look up how to pronounce wyvern, and instead went on a tangent of translating "playing cards" in Spanish towards the end 😭
