You brought back some 1980's memories with that Rolls Royce 20 HP. I had helped with preparatory work for the restoration of a 1925 version, which had Freestone and Webb coachwork. The seven layers of cabin fabric needed removing, and some of the beech framework had begun to rot at one corner. The only rust on the car was a small patch on one corner of the main chassis component. The Aluminium firewall had some mild oxidation. One rear wing needed some work to remove a dent which had been made when the car had last been run, a few decades earlier. I'll never forget that classic Rolls Royce very deep blue sheen to what might have been mistaken for black paint.
The engine was soon stripped down for cleaning. Once the old oil had been removed, it was found that there were no appreciable signs of wear on any of the moving parts. Interestingly, there was an engine balancer on one end of the crankshaft which contained 96 parts, just to produce that legendary lack of engine vibration.
Once reassembled, the engine was refitted, connected to a battery and primed. Then it restarted at the first attempt. Beautiful! To test the story of a coin being able to stand on the car when the engine was running, we found an old penny, stood it on edge on the bonnet and restarted the engine. The coin didn't even wobble. Amazing engineering for a four cylinder engine of its time!
Another memory was triggered by that Renault 5. I did all of my driving lessons in an S registered Renault 5 TS in 1981, and passed the test in it at the first attempt. For a beginner, the engine was rather prone to stalling, and I'm sure that it ran on kangaroo petrol! 😉 My driving instructor owned several of them, and his only complaint was that learner drivers would wear the clutches out within as little as three months. Once I figured out how to drive it, it became a pleasure to take lessons in the little beauty.
Then I went and bought a Mk 2 Ford Cortina 1600E as my first car. Don't ask me why. 🤷‍♂ I simply loved its long bonnet and long stroke engine. The Ford gearbox and clutch were also a revelation after the Renault. Forgiveness is due to me though; after pranging the Cortina, then later driving Metros for almost 25 years, my retirement present to myself was, and still is, a Renault!
    Thanks Ian. 🙂👍

Both my Grandfather and myself owned two Saab 96 V4s - my Grandfather 's was a 1968 Deluxe model with round headlamps and mesh grille which was replaced in 1969 by rectangle headlamps and chrome grille. Mine was a 1974 model which had a black plastic grille. Interesting, the model you showed is a bull nosed Saab 96 which was manufactured from 1960 .In 1965 Saab lengthened the front end (long nosed) to move the radiator from behind the engine to infront of the engine. In 1967 the four stroke Ford V4 engines were installed .1968 was the last year the two stroke engines were manufactured. The last Saab 96 V4 was manufactured in 1980 .20 years in production Amazing. An absolute hoot to drive. Wonderful cars!!

I had a Saab 96 V4, and it was an absolute gem. An engine fire due to what I suspect was a missing clamp on a fuel line from when a specialist stage 2 blueprinted it. I had not even run the engine in, and was still on the anaemic Solex carb.

I believe the Champ gearbox was designed so that you could flick directly between forward and reverse in any of the five gears. This was supposed to make it easy to rock the vehicle back and forth to free it when stuck in deep mud or snow. Also, the engine in the military edition was a 4-cylinder Rolls-Royce design. It was more complex and expensive than the Land Rover, which eventually led to its downfall. One magazine article I read voted it the best of all the Jeep-style military vehicles (based on engineering and overall capability).
