In this video I am unboxing an EDM arc generator by BAXEDM, a few high voltage film capacitors and a pair of insulation rubber gloves. Just for fum I am charging one of the 350 µF 1500 V caps to various voltages only to short-circuit it with a servo motor. Such a high energy discharge could also be used to pump a YAG laser. In the second half of the video I am picking up and repairing an old AC / DC TIG welder by Rehm.

Make sure to sharpen that tungsten! The finer the point the finer your arc will be (in theory). That H bridge reminds me of my first real life experience of the failure mode of some (most?) high-current semiconductors: They short. At a place I worked we had a huge truck battery charger (48v, maybe 50-60 amps? - the truck weighed about 4 t) where one of the Schottky diodes in the rectifier failed, and it was designed to burn of its lead wire (they where intentionally quite thin solid strand wires). In comes our mechanic, sees the obvious problem (those thin wires are way to thin as one of them melted!), resoldered all of them with heavy gauge wire and turned it on. Quite a spectacular fireworks, and now _all_ the diodes didn't work :P

I welded up quite a bit of 1/4” aluminum last night, best of luck learning. I’m sure you’ve been watching people give tips. Keep everything clean and use clean gloves. Wipe your tig wire down and you’ll be on the right track. If you see a bunch of black garbage around your weld, your argon flow may not be enough. Oh, and that argon bottle is way too small. 😂 if you have AC balance, set it to 30% and when you’re attempting to weld dissimilar sizes of aluminum you will want to use a larger tig wire size or you will likely just keep melting only the wire back :)

  • @SidneyCritic

With DC the + side is the hot side. If you want more penetration in the metal the GND clamp is +, if you want less distortion, ie less heat, in the metal you go + for the electrode. Most use AC for Alum because it self cleans, but I have heard some people use DC straight on Alum racing engines to reduce the distortion.

So I weld for a living and I am going to tell you something that NO ONE told me when learning.
    With Alum welding,
1.stab the puddle (the melted bit) your either in or your out. Its a quick in out. No slowly approaching it figuring out where to add rod This is why the rod is balling. Its melting before it has reached the puddle. Like popping a balloon. in out. (maybe not that quick but you get the gist)
    2. Don't start moving the puddle till it is reflective. within max 3 seconds. ( I go for 1 sec but that will require you have more experience drive at 40km/h before 150km/h) You have to use a lot of current for this. The very first tip I give people doing Alum with an issue is turn up the amps. Like I have this issue where I... Stop, just turn up the amps..... yeah but I don't think.... Stop. Turn up the amps. Talk to me after that. And I mean WAY high than you think is reasonable with steel. If your used to steel you will feel like ... hold on, that high, your kidding. Nope, that high. It will work.
    3. Get the peddle for that thing. It will help a great deal especially with changing geometry of the part. A thick thing will go to a small thing as you weld up to the corner and you will make a dribbling mess. Consider the metal like a heat vessel and if it is small it fills up fast.
    4. Dude, bet ya self a bigger bottle. No joke you will use that up in less than an afternoon of not much welding. Get one that stands mid thigh when on the ground.
Have fun, your more likely to burn yourself by picking up something hot than any other risk. (oh your too smart to do that? You have gloves? Ok.... you'll see :-) )

I love the servo for shorting out the cap!
You have SO MANY windmills in Germany..... ..... ..... AND you've got 3-phase in your garage.... .... .... England is so backward!

Awesome! Such a huge step for you to get a welder, and one capable of AC/DC too! Soon no project will seem to hard to tackle, just time consuming ;) I advice you train on simpler projects to build up welding speed and muscle memory, takes quite a while to get the feel for it and not have to think excessivly.

Ein tipp als Kühlmittel fürs Schweißgerät einfach destillierteswasser und isopropanol im 50/50 Verhältnis mischen ist umweltverträglich und nicht brennbar und verdunstet beim Auslaufen.

I tried to get schematics to repair a Fronius MagicWave TIG welder that had long been out of production. They refused completely, so it ended up as electronic scrap instead.. That machine was much more complicated than the one in this video and it felt pretty hopeless with no schematics to look at. I'm sure some service center who doesn't do anything else all day would have been able to fix it.

TIG welding is really nice to watch (well, not with the naked eyes!). Other techniques such as stick welding and MIG look so messy in comparison... I know they all have their own purpose though.

Love your videos! the acute sens e of humor the all thing is indeed wonderful, but between CNC machines and huge sparks and explosion ..man ! Sparks win hands down all the time .... and they even can bring you much more audience :) Just keep the good work going!

That beep on 2:32 really caught me off-guard, I actually got up and check the gas sensor in the kitchen before I realized it was coming from the video :-) Certain frequencies really mess up with the direction perception of the human ears. :-))

    How INTOLERABLE is tolerable? 😄
Wire EDM and sinker EDM are both amazingly slow, but the results are fascinating. It would create a live stream opportunity only comparable to either the eagle cam or giraffe cam (awaiting the new arrivals).

In the long history of welders there is a reoccurring theme of the engineers changing the basic heart of the welding machine to improve the quality of the welds. This has evolved into the many different settings that you see today. But, just imagine if Nikola Tesla got interested in welding, I am sure we would see some very high frequency AC welding of different waveforms, triangle wave for example.

How I missed this video I dont know. Seen all the others and subscribed and often comment and always click many other comment likes in case it helps the youtube algorithm. And this just turned up!
Well TOT and Stefan Gottswinter and Electroboom and AVE all have an exquisite sense of humour but this video beats even yourself! and very easily. I watch Mike Patey and Tim Dodd like a religion but this specific video (Content very close to my own past life) has just knocked Jeremy Clarksons linguistic skills down to 2nd place.

Just to be cautious grinding thoriated tungsten gives off radioactive particles when grinding ,,do not breath it in and make sure you do it in a well ventilated area..even so letting this get into the environment is something to be considerate a negative. some sort of collection fan filter should be used to at least catch the fine particles for proper disposal..
