    Being an "old" new guy trying to get started, I can agree with almost all you said. I am a truck mech. and know about need tools for specific jobs but, being old, 53, the need for less body wear and tear becomes appearent and a power/trip hammer with interchanging tooling would, I think, in my best interest. At least till I figure out my niche. Thanks again!

      +Floyd Underhill power hammers are a great tool for people with physical limitations as long as the proper tooling is put underneath them and they're not treated like just a big smashy tool. You have to work with your body the best way you can. Thank you for taking the time to comment. God bless you and have a great weekend.

      Cool! I've got a few vids related to power hammers, including techniques and tooling.

    Tomorrow I have a striker friend around 😂 That's also a very versatile power hammer

      Sure thing! You could always film it and do the "smith and striker challenge" :)

    Hi Roy, I think I"m on the mend, again...As always, excellent video. I got back to building a power hammer off of your available plans. Still not medically cleared to drive as of yet....to that end, getting quality wood 4" and 6" timbers will either have to wait until I am cleared due to the lack of timber frame stock. However, It seems like I have miles of square tube stock...so I will have to build it out of steel and use wood wherever I can to decrease that collateral impact shock. I'll take pictures along the way. Thanks so much and I am glad just to be able to watch blacksmithing videos to keep that inspiration of recovering happening that much faster.

    Can you make a video on that power hammer , how did u DIY crank ?

    They are great for reducing stress on the body when doing heavy work. I used a big one and did not feel comfortable with it (safety issues in relation to my disability). I may build a modified unit that is smaller and gives me more time to react if something goes wrong.

    Around what size power hammer would you suggest for a blade Smith making knives and swords?

  • @danielmoss2089

    My Massey makes me a better smith. I just wave the metal under her and kitty makes the magic happen. I would say that you should buy or make the biggest hammer you can as you can do small work with a big hammer but it harder to do big work with a little hammer. As in your example with the hand hammers. The sledge hammer can still make the small taper but the 1oz hammer can forge inch square so well.
    You do make some good points old bean. great video and well done on all the hard work.

    I did like how you thought about it :D But I can't decide the power hammer hammer head weight for making tooling for blacksmiths and garden tools and also some weaponry(not those that use powder of eny kind) so the issue is should I go for bigger size or the smaller size... I am just starting this winter to make it as profession for me and can do tongs and those with hammer but if I need to make bigger tools etc. I need an advice for it

    • @ChristCenteredIronworks
      @ChristCenteredIronworks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +asf130 The Company it is great to hear that you are going to try to make this your profession! My suggestion for most guys getting into it in needing to buy a power hammer is to pick a power hammer that will be most versatile for the work you want to get into. That being said a power hammer with a 50lb Ram weight should be sufficient enough to create just about anything you need. 100 lbs Ram weight is about ideal if you are forging heavy tooling AKA Hammerheads in such as these require a ram that is large enough to overcome the mass of the material and whatever top tooling you're using. If your main ideal is to forge tongs you can get this done with as little as 10 pounds Ram weight. Hope this helps with your decision making thank you for taking the time to watch and we'll catch you on the next one

    advantages: less effort to do rough work so all you have to do is finish the product. disadvantage: less time and effort spent hammering?

    • @ChristCenteredIronworks
      @ChristCenteredIronworks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Levi Blackwood the disadvantage to a power hammer is your own abilities and tooling to be used underneath them. They are a tool like any other tool much like welding equipment if you don't know how to TIG weld a TIG welders worthless to you if you don't know how to use a MIG welder a MIG welder is useless to you if you don't know how to use a bench grinder a bench grinder is useless to you. This same thought process applies to power hammers and presses they are a tool and they're only as good as the designed tooling you can put underneath them. Hope this gives this video a little clarity. I will be having another video out coming soon that shows and highlights the differences between the two presses and power hammers that is. Thanks for watching
