Forming Knife Pleats

  • Forming Knife Pleats. Adding pleats to a sewing project is a great way to add a decorative feature and remove unwanted bulk from garments. There are many styles of pleat to choose from and use during the course of your fashion sewing, and each has a particular look and use.
    The knife pleat (as demonstrated in this tutorial) can often be found on skirts, and its look and design is used to create many straight folds of fabric, all of which travel and form in one direction.
    The knife pleat, especially when pressed, gives a sharp and crisp look.
    Unlike the inverted pleat we looked at previously, knife pleats are used for basic gathering purposes.

    what would you recommend as a good follow up to apply knife pleats? Skirts, which side is up and which is down! what styles would you recommend in applying these?

  • @colleenglea
    @colleenglea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The skirt can be done either way. If your having many pleats, form them first and then cut out your pattern. If you're only having three or four, cut the pattern out first which will include the pleat measurements. Professionally set means they are creased permanently by a company and will remain aligned.

    The length will be determined by your sewing project. The width comes down to personal choice, but I'd say the fabric measurement should be around double the original.
