    OMG, I HAVE this exact Marx HO gauge set, received at Christmas, 1964, only mine is together and complete.
    It came with a red WM 2 bay hopper, diecast center depressed flatcar with 2 wire coils for the load, a SP brown gondola with coal load, and detailed matching offset cupola caboose, along with track and powerpak.
    It still runs, and I know I logged a lot of miles on it as a kid.
    Take good care of it, Ron, and thanks for the knowledge and memories! 🚂

    I had the same Marx saddle tank on my first 4x8 HO layout in 1960 when I was 12 years old. It was a good runner that lasted many years.

    I think these repair videos are great. Just joined a model rail club in the town I have moved too and found a whole bunch of locos sitting in the 'to do' pile; some of them dating back nearly 10 years. In a matter of a month, I have them all back in service. You're proving that all locomotives are repairable. In the case of my club, its now a decisi0on of how much they want to spend to bring a loco back into service.

    19:58 dang or dam? I can't tell. I am reminded of an early 1960s Mantua die cast model of the same tanker, sold in 0-4-0 and 0-6-0 variants. It was heavy, for both pulling power and electrical contact. There was optional full valve gear kit that one could buy for them that looks and works great. I think the Mantua had far fewer mechanical parts too. Interesting that the cheaper Tyco with no valve gear, half functioning rods, plastic superstructure and lower cost, was so much more complicated and filled with fiddle bits.

    • @classicmodeltrains
      @classicmodeltrains  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The 60's Mantua's were/are pretty neat and lots heavier

    I recently bought a NYC version of this locomotive off of E-Bay for $3. It must be a few years newer as there were no "bushings" for the axels. I worked my magic on it, and yours runs about the same. You have to crank the speed to get over the switches. It is one that I would call a siding baby.

    I have a Marx H.O set, the Santa Fe F3 freight set and fortunately the original box was not discarded for something else. The lid used colors and depicts a boy in an engineers hat and his dad overlooking the layout. I have to do an engine maintenance as you perform. It still runs but getting a flow of electrons from the rails to the motor has caused a stoppage. It has never been apart for any maintenance and I used to run it for hours. I still have a couple of the boxes the cars came in. I remember my cousin had a train garden that he and his dad erected before Christmas. It was all Lionel O-27 scale, approx a 4'x8' layout. Space in a home of 4 is limited and it was in the basement. He started with a steam loco and then I believe he also added a diesel. Don't ask anything about the types because it was too long ago. I remember the diesel had Magna-Traction which I read was an Alnico magnet somehow affecting the wheels. I have never seen how it works. This was back in the late 50's to early 60's and I know it was after 1954 by the car my uncle drove. If any engine needed Magna-Traction it was the Marx Commodore Vanderbilt. Those things were rockets. Another memory is tinsel. My brother taught me how to take the tinsel off the Christmas tree and lay it across the track then drive the engine over it to see some sparks. I believe the tinsel was made from lead. Thanks for posting.

    Is that a Fender Strat hanging on the wall? If so, how much for it? Cheers from eastern TN

    Ugh, so many PRR and New Haven wagons I'd like (got one of the Bachmann New Haven EF-4s brand new locally for a paltry US$120 equivalent), but the shipping just wouldn't be worth it.

      @@classicmodeltrains Australia. Just have to keep buying up every cheap PRR/NH wagon I can find and updating the axles and couplers. Got pretty good at installing Kadee #28s, down to around 10 minutes on US$3 Tyco 40' Boxcars.

    hey ron 20 years ago i think i could name those classic models. lol but unlike your trains, dawn dish soap and some super lube will not make me run better. .... always enjoy the repairs see you next time.

    Man, they really loved ripping off Mantua's tank locomotive. That's the same shell, but made from terrible plastic.

    Market Place is full of con artists. Do not let them LOW BALL you. And do not be too polite! I know its in your nature to be nice all the time, and that's why us 33%ers like you so much. But do not be afraid to tell them, Money Talks and B.S. walks. And your time is worth money. The first 15 minutes is free, then its $40/15 minutes. And you do Pay By Plate with a $50 service fee. But of coarse a purchase give free parking

      So many just waste your time with the "is this available" and they live 9 states away and the item is big as a fridge. It's like thats what they do all day is just mess with sellers on the marketplace. Yes I am too kind to people. I treat them like how I want to be treated but seems now a days nice guys finish last.
