    Mantua Classics and Model power locomotives shared the same Chinese manufacturing plant. I am guessing this based on similarities in design. Metal chassis with the same kind of motor and all wheel pick up/drive. Their trucks are the same as well. They are excellent creepers and smooth runners if lubricated as you have demonstrated so well in this video. Thank you for inspiring me to break mine down and follow the same procedures.

    I don’t model any particular era, but it looks “real”. However, I’m a sucker for these types of sets. When showing off your set to someone, they think the whole thing is neat and goofy sets like these, or the A Team train, a Hershey train, etc makes people smile.

      For Father's Day this year I got a 1992 Bachmann Olympic train set. When I was 13 I ordered that set via the mail and sent in my money and whatever box tops or stickers they required. I got a letter back that they had sold out. For 30 years I always wanted one and got one new in the box and it ran like it was brand new. My wife rolled her eyes and my kids loved it. Mission Accomplished!

    The company was called Mantua Metal Products. Most people were not afraid of putting a k i t together because people were used to working with their hands. Most people preferred k i t s over ready to run because it was cheaper. I remember a quote in Model Railroader where the kid was saying while it's not even put together or painted or anything and the guy behind the counter said that's part of the fun.

    Before the 1970s so much train stuff was made in America I remember in a magazine that into shifts at Lionel they could produce 1600 train set. Train nuts are born they are not made you can't turn somebody into a train nut. It's just like being a motorcycle nut it's in the blood. Just like with toy trains regular people can't understand your fascination with either trains or motorcycles. They just don't get it. Which is why it makes it special for us. That's what gives us our Brotherhood our common passion shared. Whether it be toy trains or motorcycles or both.

    • @classicmodeltrains

      I like them both. My motorcycle has never tried to kill me, only others on the road have tried. The ignorant "others" on the road has caused me to not ride anymore. My trains are a pretty safe pastime.

      @@classicmodeltrains there was an article in classic toy train where some cheapskate try to save some money and instead of putting smoke fluid in his locomotive he put WD-40 in his locomotive. When you turned it on it sent out a column of flame that ended up setting his house on fire. Now there was another article so many people think the new trains they can work on them like the old train yet there are high-capacity circuits in there that if you touch them even if the train is off they store electricity and you could be shocked real bad if you have a pacemaker if you screw that up or anything like that. They advised to leave the repairs of the newer electronic Laden trains do a hobby shop or send it off for service.

    Very, very nice video! Kudos my Friend!
    The F7 motor is a Mabuchi FK-260; although been a three pole one, you saw how smooth it is. Her trucks look like the Mehano’s ones that equipped the last versions of RS-2s, RS-11s and GP-18s sold in the States under the Model Power Brand. Mechanically speaking her sole flaw for me is the absence of flywheels, but that’s ok on your model, based on her amps and volts readings.
    One again, my best compliments Ron for your almost 2.1 K followers. This should show you that you’re on the right track! Please keep doing your marvelous work. We really appreciated it so much!😊

    I grew up in Woodbury Heights, NJ where the Mantua Metals and later Tyco factory was located. Just to let you know, it's pronounced Man-chew-ah, not Man-two-ah. You're correct that in the beginning, it was all kits you had to put together. Lots of people in town and the surrounding area got their first jobs at the factory, including my sister. My mother in law also worked there. When you went into the lobby, there was a wall of trains a lot like the one behind you. There was a reject pile at the back of the factory where they would destroy the trains that had imperfections. Some of us would raid that pile before they got destroyed, and we'd fix them up as good as we could. Many of us in town had Mantua and/or Tyco train sets when we were kids.

      What a AWESOME story James!! Thanks for sharing. Pretty cool you young-uns would pilfer the junk pile for treasures and whoop them into shape. A dream come true for sure. With my un-official poll I took only a few people say it "chew-a". I guess that's how you tell the locals from the visitors. Majority of people (98%) use "two-a". Thanks for watching and commenting :-)

    Fascinating history about Mantua. I have a Mantua HO scale model of EMD F7A/B combo. (the 'B' unit is an unpowered dummy loco). In Pennsylvania Railroad gold 5-stripe and Tuscan Red finish. Found at a local model train shop a couple of years ago. Great runner appears to be very well made. Came with original red boxes I have no idea of manufacture date but the boxes do state 'made in China' I know they are older because they have the old style 'horn' couplers. I was not aware of the Mantua brand before I found the locos at the train store the sales person told me Mantua made some good trains. I've found that to be the case in the locos I bought.

      I'm curious if you have the re-released Mantua's from the late 70's to 90's? The original Mantua's came in a red box marked Tyco and were from 1960 to 1970. They were all made in America. The re-releases were re-engineered and quite a lot better than the ones from the 60's.

    Another fine show, Ron! Don’t much appreciate the showy “collector’s” set of football teams, either, but I guess some folks would like them. Mantua is my favorite steam loco manufacturer and Tyco has many similar if not identical locos, so I’m not too fussy about them. (BTW, I’ve heard Mantua pronounced Man-to-ah and also Man-chew-ah. I don’t know which one is correct, maybe both for different applications and I am not going to argue the issue.) My preference is the Mantua Red presentation box issue locos. Those usually have certificates of authenticity and extra detail parts on the locos.

      Could be. I hear these were made in the same china plant as other manufacturers loco's. Could be they used very similar drives

    Have you ever had to repair a Bachmann pancake motor. I have bought a F40PH with a good motor but the index gears were broken. I made her a dummy locomotive.

    • @classicmodeltrains
      @classicmodeltrains  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a few but have not produced a repair video on them. A lot of that Bachman has them brittle gears and are un-repairable. Same parts broken in the donor locomotive.

    • @classicmodeltrains

      Yup, A few comments have come up with different pronunciations. Now I wonder which one is the "right" way :-)

    Just curious have you weighed that caboose I have a New York Central it had a double weightt in it and i took one weight out of it because it was too heavy the way it was.,......

    • @classicmodeltrains
      @classicmodeltrains  ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess I never did weigh the caboose.. Dang it!! knew there was something I forgot. The set is packed away now or I would do it now.

    I have a NS can motor drive f7a unit locomotive from bachmann and the locomotive can't really pull heavier cars and it has the same drive as the set that you are cleaning

    • @classicmodeltrains
      @classicmodeltrains  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm wondering if perhaps the "traction tires" are hard and brittle and need replacing?

  • @frankmarkovcijr5459
    @frankmarkovcijr5459 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A set like that. Really made to be run like a regular train set because it's more of a fantasy paint scheme that's the kind of train set people by just because there was a football and they never run it they leave it in the Box hell you could have a dummy locomotive in the Box said it would make any difference. It's like the Harley Davidson train set or the Indian Motorcycle train set. It's something to have in your collection not really meant to run. Do you know there is such a thing as a Model Railroader retirement home. I saw an advertisement for one in Ohio now imagine when you're old and feeble and you're living and a nursing home and everybody there is a train. And there are operating layouts for your enjoyment. That's my kind of Nursing Home.

      Collectable sets look good on a wall shelf. I need to get my name on the waiting list of this retirement home. Sounds like my kinda place.
