Clearly the Oregon coaching staff understands what it's like to love somebody and they want to see them be successful because they are willing to correct it on the spot. This is really a reflection of the culture of our nation these days, everybody says they want to progress or make their dream come true, but they don't want to deal with the negativity that will cross their paths. Therefore, that dream never shapes into reality.
And I bet when they got into the locker room Mario went into stern but cool dad mode, making it clear that he gets the excitement and pride on the catch but there's a time and a place and Oregon doesn't showboat. I feel this was a learning moment for the kid and his submissive acceptance of the reprimand speaks more about how much Cristobal is respected by his players than anything else. Hell, the dude was specifically requested by the players to take the OC job when Taggart bailed and has dominated recruitment ever since. He may not be the best when it comes to drawing up game plans but he's one hell of an interpersonal coach. My bet is Hutson had a much calmer sit down with Mario in the locker room about the merits of humility(and potential penalty yards of pride) and won't be pulling that shit again in the future.
I respect the announcer for what he said about disciplining the kid to a point, not to embarrass him or make him feel like crap. But we gotta appreciate the couch for what he did, because he won’t do that anymore.

@Juji-Gatame I remember getting chewed out like that in pop warner as a 10 year old. Can you imagine a league where you get a penalty like that and the coach says "its ok, its not your fault. Here is a trophy for trying"?
Breaking news- audio recorded from Cristobals headset: Cristobal: That ball spin was dope AF! Hutson: Sorry for the penalty coach. Cristobal: Dont worry about it- I am going to pretend I am mad, but later you TOTES HAVE to show me how you did that spin! Hutson: Yes Sir.
Odds are it was because of the spin as well as the arm cross while staring at the defender. Kid needs to realize these refs are dogshit and will call that and just contain it till the next level. And Mario likely got that point across, mad respect to Hutson for taking it like a champ and not trying to argue back or excuse it. He fucked up, appears he owned it and they moved on. Judging from the interaction there is a mutual familiarity and respect between the two. Coach will coach the way he does and the players know it's for their benefit. That's why the player stood there respectfully and did not look or shy away. Good for them.
Discipline is the greatest sign of respect a mentor can give to a pupil . I'd be much more concerned if nothing is said at all . Clearly the Oregon coaching staff understands what it's like to love somebody and they want to see them be successful because they are willing to correct it on the spot. NGL the ballspin was cool as hell, so was his reaction to coach.
Coach is SOB
You could tell coach was on “Dad voice” mode, kid didn’t even flinch.
Exactly

Where do the networks find these pansy, limp wrist announcers? Oh yeah, they grow them. Good for Coach Cristobal. And that freshman just learned a valuable lesson that may come in handy later on in the year.

@Juji-Gatame I remember getting chewed out like that in pop warner as a 10 year old. Can you imagine a league where you get a penalty like that and the coach says "its ok, its not your fault. Here is a trophy for trying"?
Well that's the problem, networks and announcers are soft liberals.
Breaking news- audio recorded from Cristobals headset:
Cristobal: That ball spin was dope AF!
Hutson: Sorry for the penalty coach.
Cristobal: Dont worry about it- I am going to pretend I am mad, but later you TOTES HAVE to show me how you did that spin!
Hutson: Yes Sir.
😂😂😂
bro he spun the ball the refs need to chill
They called the same thing on Sam LaPorta for Iowa
Odds are it was because of the spin as well as the arm cross while staring at the defender. Kid needs to realize these refs are dogshit and will call that and just contain it till the next level.
And Mario likely got that point across, mad respect to Hutson for taking it like a champ and not trying to argue back or excuse it. He fucked up, appears he owned it and they moved on. Kids got one hell of a bright future

Discipline is the greatest sign of respect a mentor can give to a pupil . I'd be much more concerned if nothing is said at all . That coach giving him an ear full means he sees a ton of potential in that kid. All you see is this clip . There is no telling how many times they've already been over this via practice and team meetings I'm sure the taunting stuff has been explained at nauseum especially to the freshman class . What this coach said is nothing compared to what the rest of the secondary group is going to be saying to him when they're all running wind sprints for his mistake.
Secondary hes a reciever.
There was only 15 seconds left until halftime. He could have did all that in the locker room. Who is the coach trying to impress doing all that on the sideline.

@@paidtourist6563 his coach probably wants him to play as though it *does* matter. And clocks have been wound at times where games end because of poor discipline. I think the coach is ultimately making a good point
@@christianmaas8934 The clock doesn't wind on an unsportsmanlike penalty in that situation. He was laying into a freshman because the freshman potentially lost points for Oregon. I understand the weight of the situation. But from personal experience, being yelled at causes fear of failure. If you're worried about making a mistake because you know an ass-chewing is coming, then you will play tense and will not take the chances necessary to win close games against good teams.
For example, the best I've ever played in sports was when I didn't care if I won or lost, didn't care if I made the play or missed it. I just went for it will zero hesitation. The worst I've ever played was when I had hard-ass coaches who yelled at the players for ever single mistake. I always hesitated to do what I knew I could do. When I was in high school basketball my sophomore and junior years, I had a had-ass as a coach. I never took chances and I maybe averaged 4-6 points per game...MAYBE. My senior year we got a different coach who wasn't a hard-ass. I had multiple games where I hit 4 and 5 three-pointers in a game and in the district tournament against the defending state champs, I shot 86% in the game and hit 7 three-pointers. My team won by 4 or 5 points. All of that production simply because I wasn't being yelled at. I wasn't playing tense. I wasn't being conditioned to be afraid of failure.
@@paidtourist6563 I totally sympathize with your experience and what that meant for you playing basketball, but when I played football, any and all adrenaline you could muster to get through a football game was valuable. When i or my fellow players would get yelled at, in my experience, we would get more aggressive in our mid play action, not less, while maybe thinking twice only about penalties, jumping offsides, legitimate concerns. Clearly the coach and reciever have a relationship that allows for some bend not break yelling and coaching, theyve been together working everyday for the past year or so I imagine.
Spinning the ball is an automatic penalty. Really dumb thing to do.
I'm with the coach on this one. He taught his whole team a lesson in 20 seconds on not to do these stupid things. No need to discuss no need to rehash no need to rewatch the penalty on film. EVERY player on the Ducks team just learned in twenty seconds on what not to do
This right here. He wasn't just throwing his headset and yelling at one player. He was showing a passionate reaction to anyone on the team who would put themselves before the team. There is no I in team. Its cliche. But its the truth
Bruh that wasn't even unsportsmanlike. That was a bs call.
