    Hi Leo,
    I found your posts while browsing TH-cam. How lucky I am! Thank you for such in-depth information on each topic you discuss and explain.

    Leo... You're A Star! Every video I have watched with you worked! You speak clearly and honestly with no gimmicks. You have saved me from throwing out this damned puter. Ty so much!

    Recently had to buy a new (reconditioned) laptop and comparing the performance between it and the old one it is like night and day. Yes, new one has better/faster processor, more memory etc but as you said the big difference is the installed software.
    I most certainly am one of those who installs loads of stuff and then forgets all about it but I plan on keeping this machine as lean as possible. After I get my old machine cleaned up I plan to use that as my 'experimental' machine and only install stuff on the new one once it has proved itself usefull over the long term. Things I only need for a 'one off' project will stay on the old one.
    Hopefully that will make this new one last longer before it too eventually gets bloated.

    The thing that made a huge difference to the speed of my computer was defragmenting it regularly.

    I thought I was disciplined about installing software. Nevertheless I took Leo's advice and was shocked to find all the stuff I had installed over the years (e.g. 4 pdf readers). After removing these, as well as the manufacturer's bloatware and programs I no longer use, then disabling some startup programs and finally clearing caches, cookies etc my computer runs nearly as fast as it did out of the box. Thank you very much Leo.

    I still remember the floppy era. Most programs ran without needing to be installed. You popped in the disk you needed, and ran the program directly. I really despise the "install this software on your hard drive" model. I treat it as a necessary evil, at best.

    • @askleonotenboom
      @askleonotenboom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Look for "portable" alternatives to the software you despise. Many (though of course nto all) have portable isntalls, which will run direectly from the USB stick or wherever they happen to be copied, without an install/setup process.

    How much would a performance tune-up for a 2014 HP Pavilion and keyboard replacement cost? I would like to get mine back to running up to speed. It started out fast, but has gradually gotten slower

    Maybe I'm an outlier, but I am too paranoid about what's installed on my system to have: #1- lots of TSR software installed, #2 - any software that gives special access to my system, and connects to the Internet (unless I really really need to). If I can manage it, I try to do as much as I can from the browser. For those functions that do not require Internet, I use only the most trusted software I can find, and disable any TSR functionality I can, if it has any at all. I run the software only when I need to, and make sure it's shut down when I don't need it.
    The TSR's I do have running include: printer driver, video card driver and update software, scanner driver and update software, Windows Defender, OneDrive, sound card drivers, and whatever Firefox, Chrome, and Edge do. When I use Steam, I load it, and when I'm done, I exit it. It does not auto-log-in, nor does it automatically load up when I start Windows.
    I suppose, after seeing this video, it's no coincidence that I don't generally have slowing-down issues with my computer. It also helps that I overbuild my computers in terms of processing power, RAM, and storage. I use way less than I have (although I am chomping at the bit trying to find an affordable video card upgrade).
    I like to have a good handle on what my system is running, and why it's running it. If I don't need it, I don't use it.

    I only have about 6 programs I installed on a $2000 computer and I use them all the time, I haven't installed anything I don't use. There is still a lot of space on the comp (like 400GB) but it's slowed down LOT and the 'disk' keeps going up to 100% in Task Manager. Plus I'm getting black screen frozen with cursor a lot. I'm getting worried about how slow it's becoming, evening opening a chrome tab takes about 8 mins D:

    Hi, what are the signs that I have been infected with a keylogger?

    • @askleonotenboom
      @askleonotenboom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's kinda the problem - like any malware, there could be NO signs until you find your account has been hacked or something else.

      @@askleonotenboom Is it possible for such things to be hidden in mp4 codecs and getting activated when you run the video?

    • @askleonotenboom
      @askleonotenboom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ivann8971 Yes. Tricking you into downloading and installing fake codecs is one way malware spreads.

    • @ivann8971
      @ivann8971 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@askleonotenboom Yes, but I did not download or install any codecs. I just wonder if I can get it if I opened a video that I downloaded in a normal video player (MPC-HC). I watched it without internet and I did not notice anything suspicious.
      But still I scanned my PC with malwarebytes, kaspersky (I use the free version) TDSS killer(,kaspersky's anti rootkit tool) malwarebytes anti-rootkit tool and before all that I run Rkill to kill all the processes if there are any...
      I scaned the whole PC normal mode and once in safe mode. Not one program did notice anything, so I just wonder if I am safe or maybe just a bit paranoid?
      Sorry for the essay...

    Most of us are short of time. You (Leo) can help by just giving us an article, instead of a video. That will allows us readers to get to the crux of the solution in a much much shorter time.
    Forgive me if I have now missed something at the end of your video, as I could not spare the time to watch it all.
    Shirley, the short answer is - To just check what programs/processes are starting with windows and disable them.
    Rob
    PS I also disable indexing, and Install Avast Free (That tells Windows defender to stop running in the background whenever it flippin well feels like it). Additionally with Avast you can right click the Notification icon, and tell it to disable until windows restarts.

      If you read the description underneath the video you'll see that there's a link to the very article you're asking for. It was there all along. ;-) "Updates, related links, and more discussion: askleo.com/16473"
