    UPDATE: This BP was completely demolished last fall. In it's place they are building a Mattress Warehouse, scheduled to open by this summer. 3-5 years ago, that intersection & the surrounding area had numerous abandoned places.

    the BP is now gone -- replaced by a Mattress Factory. Most of the abandoned businesses at that end of Bridgeville/SF have been either torn down & repurposed -- but at one point, the general area boasted an abandoned plant, the abandoned BP, an abandoned Burger King, an abandoned Texaco, an abandoned church, & an abandoned Knight's Inn...The abandoned Kings across the street remains abandoned, & an an abandoned dry cleaners has been added. That McDonald's directly across from the BP has been remodeled.

    Some states/municipalities require gas station companies to replace the underground tanks depending on their age. The cost of digging up the old ones and remediation of any leaks or spills and placing new tanks, is prohibitive. Easier to cash out, hide the money, declare bankruptcy, then start a new company and build a new station somewhere else.

They started building a Starbucks and a Chiplote in 2015 replacing the Exxon gas station. Another fuel brand that used to be widespread is ARCO. They were all over the northeast when I was a kid, but they all became something else, or just closed up shop, 30-35 years ago. I thought that they went of business, but every time I would see a Dodgers' game on TV, there would be ARCO advertising all over the place, indicating the brand at least still existed in SoCal.

    • @kurttoy5035

    BP bought out Amoco when they came to the USA sometime in the 90s. They started the changeover by saying they were "BP featuring Amoco gasoline." For a period of time that stood until all references to Amoco were removed. Right after the Deepwater Horizon accident BP dropped servicing some Southern locations and sold them to either Marathon or Valero (I live in Mississippi and had a no-longer usable BP credit account). The only BP I have seen since the changeover is a truck stop in East Mississippi near the Alabama state line (where BP still has some stores).

    Ok, forgive me for sounding a bit dumb, but, has there been no rain or wind or any other condition that would cause a newspaper thats been sat there for apparently over 2 years to disintegrate or disappear? Would it honestly still be in that condition out in the open and all the elements?

    • @ramjet-dm3tr
      @ramjet-dm3tr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      theroosterbooster1 the fire extinguisher said Dec. 2014 which means it would be inspected again in Dec. Of 2015.so the paper is accurate.

      @theroosterbooster1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    • @offspringin
      @offspringin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      theroosterbooster1 Thinking maybe the papers were in some kind of plastic free newspaper box. Possible the metal pay per paper style. Could have been picked up or stolen just before this video was made. So papers could have only been exposed to weather for a few days... just a theory. I had the same thought as you thought. 2 year old paper out in snow/rain/sun

    the reason why the amoco name was on or is on the bp pumps is cause amaco merged with bp and that happened in 1998. In May 2008, United States BP stations mostly discontinued use of the "Amoco Fuels" logo as BP introduced its new brand of fuel, "BP Gasoline with Invigorate". BP still uses the Silver and Ultimate brands for its midgrade and premium gasolines.

    BP and Amoco merged in 1998, then started phasing out the Amoco name (except for their Premium fuel to keep the Amoco trademark in use) to just only BP in the US.
    In 2017, BP brought back the Amoco name as a sibling brand (think Exxon and Mobil or Marathon and Arco) to increase franchise opportunities.

      They got people to finance them, opened a place, then after about 3 months they brought in a team and removed every stove, chair, and plate in one night.
      When I showed up I had no job and I hated that because it was a good one.

The one in my hometown ( Port Credit ) was a PC and then a Pizza Pizza was built on its site with other shops . That one in Bridgeville looked like an idea location ! Standard Oil Company became Amoco. Originally founded in Indiana in 1889. Later Amoco also absorbed American Oil Company. In 1998 Amoco merged with British Petroleum becoming BP Amoco. Most stations were rebranded as BP's selling Amoco gas. So not sure i any real Amoco stations left but BP is Amoco in all regards.

However, a brand-new fully Amoco-branded station just opened near me in early 2020, which was refreshing to see, so perhaps they're restarting the brand?

    Awesome -- This is my hood! Bridgeville borough & South Fayette Township adjoin each other & share a common zip code (15017). Unfortunately, this BP gas station/Fill n' Full/car wash has now been put out of its misery & torn down. Eventually that whole I-79 interchange & Route 50 intersection are going to be redesigned & widened.
    You should've come to that area about 2 years ago -- there was an abandoned Exxon across the street (where that Chipoltle is now), along with an abandoned metal plant called Ionics (which was behind that McDonald's), & an abandoned Burger King (which was where the Med Express is now, seen briefly in the distance at 10:52 when you are exploring the car wash). Then, on the other side of I-79, north of the BP, there was an abandoned Knight's Inn, an abandoned Texaco station, & an abandoned Star City movie theater, which have all now been torn down as well....The whole area full of abandoned businesses, but they are now tearing them all down for retail & commercial redevelopment.

    There's different gas station brands all over the country. They even differ within the state. For years, we couldn't get Valero in Southern California, it was only a Northern California brand. We're starting to see Sinclair, and that's not a brand that was native to CA. BP even said they'd eventually pull the AM/PM brands out of CA, but that hasn't happened yet. We don't, however, have BP stations themselves even though we do have BP refineries. Florida has Wawa, and the east coast has brands that we don't have on the west coast.

    Hey there. Be glad you looked at this when you did. I live in Bridgeville. This BP, store, pumps, car wash... all of it, got leveled a couple of weeks ago. It's just a bare open lot now. Though the BP sign near I-79 still exists, the building is gone.

    This abandoned station would never stay in this condition for even a MONTH in my city. In about four weeks:
    the pumps will have their nozzles ripped out
    the squeegee buckets will be smashed
    ANYTHING outside will be demolished with a car or hammer including ice chests, ATMs and vending machines
    There is absolutely NO way that glass front door will be intact. It will be smashed in and anything that can be moved will be stolen
    It also will be graffitied to H E L L within five days and will stink badly enough to make your eyes water (partly because of the brutal summer heat)
    I'm shocked that this is in such great condition.

    If Amaco went out of business, then they most likely closed all of their stores. If this location was a franchise location, then sadly, the franchisee lost his/her investment. No telling what liens and government notices were posted. Do not know how or who government agency takes over the property to redevelop it.

    BP and Amoco merged a number of years ago and became BP Amoco. A reason in part for BP buying Amoco was for the fuels.

    Here in Somerset Ky all the BP’s have been turned into Marathons, and most of the Shell’s have been turned into Valero’s. We used to have our own chain of old school full service stations called Somerset Oil but they all closed in the mid 00’s. South of us in Whitley City there was a station called “M3” which had a Burger King and a AT&T dealer all under the same roof, it closed somewhere 06-08 and so did the Burger King and AT&T, and its 2018 and the building still stands, still has everything inside, there is still drinks in the coolers.

      That's hilarious that Shell stations turn in Valero stations. In northern Texas, it's Exxon, Texaco and Shell country. Valero can barely stay alive. Near my neighborhood, I can find multiple Exxon, Texaco or Shell stations but there's just one Valero for 8 city blocks! And 7-Eleven is really digging its heels in by building another gas station less than two blocks away.

      largol33t1 I live in northern Texas as well. There are five Valero's in my hometown, *four* of them on the Texas side of the border. It isn't that Valero is *absent* up here; there are just far fewer of them until you go further south, like Tyler (30) or Houston (a few hundred? I dunno, I'm not about to count them all!)

    We actually have two 76 gas stations that I know of here in south-central New Jersey, one in Jackson and the other in the neighboring town of Lakewood. They were no-name places originally, but they changed hands sometime around the Hess-Speedway buyout. I went there once when I really needed it. If I wanted to pay PA prices because I don't have cash then I'd move back to PA, lol.

  •  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    dude, what you should have done [according to a friend of mine...NOT ME!] is come at night to the station, break in the back door and take all that good stuff. ITS THERE WAITING FOR
    YOU and they are going to throw it away anyway. You could also gain access by THE ROOF. A lot easier at nighttime. What you do, is to wear a suit and tie, that way if police come by, you
    can FAKE IT and say you are an owner or OFFICIAL SALVAGER.
