I believe the correct boxer won but the ref sucked big time - although I do not believe he influenced the outcome. Would not want this ref for an important fight.

Pushing down (leaning) on your opponent to rest while they are bent over from the weight isn’t boxing. When done especially in the early rounds it can be done until the experienced boxer has sufficiently caused fatigue. Then, attack.
In my opinion Ali won using that tactic. A cleaver tactic that I have seen before. The announcers noticed but the referee was blind and Mattie’s corner didn’t complain.
