I'm glad they talked about Pappy and the Jackpine Gypsies.. That's where this whole thing started. It was about racing, and hill climbs. It's turned into a clown show.. Also: During the Rally sturgis charges over $700 for a tax license thats free every other time of the year. They charge hundreds of dollars per square foot per day of space on the side of the rode if you want a "shop" its so disgusting.

Biker Rallies are People watching Events. I would like to get a job for two weeks out there. I don't drink much and don't party much. Then I would like to miss the rally by a month or so where I can ride the Mountain roads hard on my Buell Ulyesses or my Yamaha FZ-07 . I would like to ride up to the Yellowstone Chief Joseph Ranch too . I am single so meeting some biker women could be fun.

I worked for Harley Davidson 2 years ago. I've been going to the rally off and on since I was 16. I'm now in my 30's. I personally saw the pack of police pulling people over on the night of the bare knuckle boxing last year. I'm also a motorcycle racer, that has raced many events in sturgis over the years. All of my info is first hand accounts, from a local that's lived it.

Did they tear out the roads in The Black Hills? Did they take away all our motorcycles? Then The Rally will happen regardless of what official actions or inactions of any governmental bodies. As long people gather to ride motorcycles show motorcycles talk about motorcycles, just gather and share their commradiere the rally will happen.
Have you been to Sturgis before or after the rally? I have its totally a different place. Then Thursday before tge barriers go up streets closed down and by midnight Thursday it's a totally different town. Again on Monday after it's back to a empty town with limited bikes and no place open to eat.

I went to the 80th in 2020. My friend that wanted to go for his third time had me drive. I had a decent time but all I did was go from one bar to the next so he wouldn’t get a DUI. He died in my home from an overdose of fentanyl on the 2nd of July, 2021. I miss you Wes.

Super good video, a lot of behind the scenes info. I have been to Sturgis twice on my Harley with a group of friends, but not at the time of the rally. We love to ride and experience the area but the congestion of the rally, not so much. Thanks again for the background.
Something is definitely going on because the Chip hasn’t announced nearly any headliners yet. By this time last year, we had Jelly Roll, Aaron Lewis, Travis Tritt and Kid Rock announced. So far, just FFDP. If it’s true that all the acts have been booked, then great. But still, why have we had none announced yet? Is it that they really couldn’t get any of the major acts they hoped and had to settle for more 2nd tier and nostalgic bands? Or are they hoping that by waiting they’ll be able to start raising pass prices before all the headliners are announced? But in any case, I’ll be there Thursday July 31 staying at the Steel Pony for the 2nd year
What a great and informative presentation. I have been coming for many years and I live in Manitoba. It is true the rally is not just Sturgis proper, but the region! It saddens me that small town politics seem to be involved. But I will be there have my holidays booked
In MN, municipal liquor store monopolies are still a thing, too. This was created after prohibition mainly for rural citizens to have access to purchase liquor in areas a private business wouldn't have enough sales or traffic to be viable. This kept bootleggers out and regulated the sales of booze in sparsely populated areas. Some cities have since relinquished their monopolies, while others have grown to 50,000 residents and simply added more city-owned stores over time.
I was at the 2020 Rally and had a great time. Only place I went that required a mask was the Hot Leather store on the corner. That lady was rude about it as well.
Tiffany Haynard is looking for a Mayoral Job. I think it was two years ago that they had the Flat Race 15 miles away from Sturgis and very few watched it. All they had to do is hand out $5.00 or $10.00 off Discount Coupons for the Flat Track race. They didn't get their new Trac Built near Sturgis because of all of the rain. All biker Rain Coats were sold out in a 500 mile radius of Sturgis.
The issue with the Flat Track race was in Rapid City out by the Airport. In 2024 they had one on the last day of the Rally. It was free to watch. The city and Flat Track was very happy with the out come
I agree, but the city of Sturgis people are fed up with noise, traffic, butt holes, and for ten days hate living there so a lot of them take vacation and rent their houses out. Think about it. When I see a buttwipe horsing around, I say something to them. Most see, they are wrong but not thinking. Also, the cops ONLY stop and tell you, but they will charge you. Then, you complain how cops harass you all the time. Well, in my 18 trips, I've never been stopped. You know you're screwing up and tge cops stop and remind you about it.
I think you two have a lot of 1st hand rally information knowledge and could consult the city on that. I think putting out a rally book/magazine for sale would generate some good money and give good info for rally goers.
We went to the Black Hills in the first week of June 2020. Beautiful!! Very few people and the area was basically ours. No traffic. No crowds. No lines. About 10 cars in the Rushmore parking lot. Everyone was “hunkered down!” 🤣
Extremely small town politics. Strong Mayoral versus City Manager formats both have pluses and minuses. As far as I am concerned the Rally belongs to all of the Black Hills. It is all a money grab. I am there (Black Hills) during the Rally to serve. As far as riding goes, my preference is before, or after the Rally. Sure, I go downtown during the day to pick-up some souvenirs, but am not there for the drinking, concerts and nonsense. I am much more likely to frequent restaurants there before, or after the Rally. Although personally usually pretty busy elsewhere the races sound interesting. I cannot believe H-D, Yamaha, Indian and others are not paying big bucks for their premium space rental. The City owning a liquor outlet is absolutely inappropriate from my perspective. It would be one thing if they merely owned and leased the space. When you have a city that seems to be sponsored by JD nothing really surprises me. Safe travels…
I've always known it as the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. I think your terms came from possibly the early days as the Black Hills Classic was the motorcycle hill climbs/racing! I could be wrong.
We don’t need Sturgis to have a rally. Just ask the city of Myrtle Beach. We’ll pack the place regardless. Also, Sturgis would be in financial trouble without the rally. It’s their main source of income. There’s no way they’ll cut that off and if they went crazy and did as stated above, everyone will still show up.

Where you from? I had a friend come out from Connecticut on a 883. He brought everything but the bathroom sink. Looking at it you couldn't see the bike just this hugh pill of stuff with a seat in the middle of it all. If he fell over you wouldn't know where to lift to upright it.

Have not been to alot of rallies but I was at the 84th and the amount of police was ridiculous. Speed limits lowered out of town and radar traps on the canyon roads. People getting arrested for drinking on the side walks, won't return.
Yes, the police have taken over. It's why people go to the Buffalo Chip. You just go camp there for the week. They dont let the police in. And the police seethe over it. Last year, the night of the bare knuckle boxing they waited outside the Chip and pulled over every single person that left, and 1 out 3 that were entering. It was ridiculous.
Its all for your safety. Any other time the 3 miles to the Chip frim downtown is 65 and out to the FTS too. Speed is lowered for the croud. Go a few days early or stay a few days after and see the normal speeds, cops, traffic. Etc...
Sturgis is the high-lite of the year for most of us, and it is a Big Friggin' Rally, but Rolling Thunder was much larger! Technically, Rolling Thunder was a protest of the government's handling of the P.O.W.'s after Viet Nam, so it wasn't called a "rally". I went in 2017, 950,000 bikers attended. Then in 2018, rain was forecast but 450,00 of us made it! 2019 was supposed to be the last ever for the event, but they estimated between 1.2 & 1.7 million turned out! Covid wiped out 2020 when the AmVets were going to take it over, and in 2021 I doubt 20,000 made the trip.
The city keeps pushing the bikers out. Cops are on people for stupid stuff and just constantly both bikers down town. Seem like less venders down town. Everyone is going to black hills vs town. Tax is high! Try welcoming people and ooening it up to all groups! Thanks for the information bob and tam!

Sorry... I am not rich or poor either but Sturgis is too Damn expensive for what it is... I went there and other than meals I purchased a T-shirt. $500 $1000 $3000 and more for camping or lodging ..... Been there done that once... They will not get another cent from me.

I’ve been riding since I was 9… I’m 65 now and still riding…15 years ago I was a truck driver pulling a tanker trailer….i was going through sturgis on 90 during the rally and I see a a gang of around 20 bikes coming up next to me passing.. the lead bike pulls up next to me and yells.. you got beer in that tanker.?…. I say no no no… not beer… whiskey!!…. lol he gave big smile and started fist pumping like a kid who found a big candy store… he says pull over pull over…. Just then the police drove up and over a loud speaker says you bikers move on move on… leave the trucker alone….lol…. True story…. There was no whiskey in the tank.. only water treatment chemicals….lol

It seems to me the City shouldn’t forget why South Dakota and Sturgis is so famous. It seems they want the revenue for pet projects ie the water park, land and, apartments, but aren’t willing to put out the money for popular bands or entertainment.

They can see and do one thing but the people will always say and do another. They tried to cancel the ralley during covid but Michael Ballard and Jesse Dupree amongst others, had voiced opinions about it being cancelled. City officlas can cancel it, the people will still show up so make necessary arrangements to accommodate.
I haven't been to Sturgis yet looking forward to the day I can go. It's a shame that it turned into a shit show money grab for the city. The same thing happened to Rolling Thunder after it got pushed out by DC. Now it's held at RFK stadium. Attendance was less than half two years ago when we were there. It seems like they want to s*** on the veterans and the whole biker community. It breaks my heart I've been riding for 40 plus years with people from all around the world. The biker community is made up of all races and nationalities everyone gets together to be free in the wind and we all get along. It seems like they're trying to break us up cuz everyone is jealous of the bond that bikers have with each other it's not like a job you live it everyday. Now they run 2,000 plus a year and one of the highest rated services in the country. Shawn's husband was a volunteer fire fighter that died in the line of service. Two sons are also firefighters. They all serve to excess.

So I look at it could be in jeopardy. Yes people would come look at Laughlin River Run. also, the hollister rally, which is coming back last year, four bikes showed up to the city, had canceled
People will still show up, rally or not. Hollister, ca stopped having there rally but people still show up but outside of hollister. Laughlin river run morphed into another rally.
I would disagree with that Hollister. Last year, according to the city of Hollister, had less than a dozen bikes coming in to, where that's why they've been trying to get the rally back to where this year they're going to have the rally there, the Loughlin rally too I went to the Laughlin rally for 15 years in a row where used to be 30 to 40000 people would show up for the rally. Now over in Bullhead City. Somebody else picked it up. Be lucky if there's 3 or 4000 bikes show up. So yes, rallies can be in jeopardy. based on what the city might do
I hope it stops. Every year in the area around a days drive around the crime rate for break ins and burglary goes way up. Several years ago someone tried at my place but we put a stop to it.
A few years back a group had a hostile takeover of the community/citizens that organized and operated the rally. This is why every year the same citizens were working the official tee shirt booths and checkin area. Since then the group that took it over think they are a business and are making a mess of it. They keep trying to stretch out the days of the rally and confusing the people coming to it. In the day it was the first full week of August and the vast majority always parked downtown and there was much more bike parking. Just saying.
Your correct on the take over. I haven't heard about the rest but can agree with the mess I've seen at the shirt places. Its still officially the first full week of August, there is no change but, they have added days infrint and they tried after but people last few years are gone by Wednesday and Thursday most are gone. Last year I was the last person at my campground to leave on Monady.

I don't see any real men or real women in the state of Sturgis all they want to do is build condos to push the motorcycle rally out that's what these condos are, for stupid water parks, leave well enough alone. We went to the Black Hills in the first week of June 2020. Beautiful!! Very few people and the area was basically ours. No traffic. No crowds. No lines. About 10 cars in the Rushmore parking lot. Everyone was “hunkered down!” 🤣

Extremely small town politics. Strong Mayoral versus City Manager formats both have pluses and minuses. As far as I am concerned the Rally belongs to all of the Black Hills. It is all a money grab. I am there (Black Hills) during the Rally to serve. As far as riding goes, my preference is before, or after the Rally. Sure, I go downtown during the day to pick-up some souvenirs, but am not there for the drinking, concerts and nonsense. I am much more likely to frequent restaurants there before, or after the Rally. Although personally usually pretty busy elsewhere the races sound interesting. I cannot believe H-D, Yamaha, Indian and others are not paying big bucks for their premium space rental. The City owning a liquor outlet is absolutely inappropriate from my perspective. It would be one thing if they merely owned and leased the space. When you have a city that seems to be sponsored by JD nothing really surprises me. Safe travels…

I've always known it as the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. I think your terms came from possibly the early days as the Black Hills Classic was the motorcycle hill climbs/racing! I could be wrong.

We don’t need Sturgis to have a rally. Just ask the city of Myrtle Beach. We’ll pack the place regardless. Also, Sturgis would be in financial trouble without the rally. It’s their main source of income. There’s no way they’ll cut that off and if they went crazy and did as stated above, everyone will still show up.

Where you from? I had a friend come out from Connecticut on a 883. He brought everything but the bathroom sink. Looking at it you couldn't see the bike just this hugh pill of stuff with a seat in the middle of it all. If he fell over you wouldn't know where to lift to upright it.

When you buy fuel walk inside and get a free paper map. It tells and shows most of tgem.
Have not been to alot of rallies but I was at the 84th and the amount of police was ridiculous. Speed limits lowered out of town and radar traps on the canyon roads. People getting arrested for drinking on the side walks, won't return.

Yes, the police have taken over. It's why people go to the Buffalo Chip. You just go camp there for the week. They dont let the police in. And the police seethe over it. Last year, the night of the bare knuckle boxing they waited outside the Chip and pulled over every single person that left, and 1 out 3 that were entering. It was ridiculous.
Well, you probably shouldn't come back if the speed limits and radar traps or getting arrested for public intoxication is a problem for you.

Its all for your safety. Any other time the 3 miles to the Chip frim downtown is 65 and out to the FTS too. Speed is lowered for the croud. Go a few days early or stay a few days after and see the normal speeds, cops, traffic. Etc...

Sturgis is the high-lite of the year for most of us, and it is a Big Friggin' Rally, but Rolling Thunder was much larger! Technically, Rolling Thunder was a protest of the government's handling of the P.O.W.'s after Viet Nam, so it wasn't called a "rally". I went in 2017, 950,000 bikers attended. Then in 2018, rain was forecast but 450,00 of us made it! 2019 was supposed to be the last ever for the event, but they estimated between 1.2 & 1.7 million turned out! Covid wiped out 2020 when the AmVets were going to take it over, and in 2021 I doubt 20,000 made the trip.

I’ve been riding since I was 9… I’m 65 now and still riding…15 years ago I was a truck driver pulling a tanker trailer….i was going through sturgis on 90 during the rally and I see a a gang of around 20 bikes coming up next to me passing.. the lead bike pulls up next to me and yells.. you got beer in that tanker.?…. I say no no no… not beer… whiskey!!…. lol he gave big smile and started fist pumping like a kid who found a big candy store… he says pull over pull over…. Just then the police drove up and over a loud speaker says you bikers move on move on… leave the trucker alone….lol…. True story…. There was no whiskey in the tank.. only water treatment chemicals….lol

It seems to me the City shouldn’t forget why South Dakota and Sturgis is so famous. It seems they want the revenue for pet projects ie the water park, land and, apartments, but aren’t willing to put out the money for popular bands or entertainment.

They tried to cancel the ralley during covid but Michael Ballard and Jesse Dupree amongst others, had voiced opinions about it being cancelled. City officlas can cancel it, the people will still show up so make necessary arrangements to accommodate.

I haven't been to Sturgis yet looking forward to the day I can go. It's a shame that it turned into a shit show money grab for the city. The same thing happened to Rolling Thunder after it got pushed out by DC. Now it's held at RFK stadium. Attendance was less than half two years ago when we were there. It seems like they want to s*** on the veterans and the whole biker community. It breaks my heart I've been riding for 40 plus years with people from all around the world. The biker community is made up of all races and nationalities everyone gets together to be free in the wind and we all get along. It seems like they're trying to break us up cuz everyone is jealous of the bond that bikers have with each other it's not like a job you live it everyday. I love you all keep the sun at your face went to your back enjoy the miles.
We rode the ride to remember in 2021. Hopefully, with the local city council, it will get better

@@bobandtams she busts her ass for this city. If you are from the area, you'll remember what the service was like when she took over. Maybe 500 calls a year and almost de certified. Now they run 2,000 plus a year and one of the highest rated services in the country. Shawn's husband was a volunteer fire fighter that died in the line of service. Two sons are also firefighters. They all serve to excess.

So I look at it could be in jeopardy. Yes people would come look at Laughlin River Run. also, the hollister rally, which is coming back last year, four bikes showed up to the city, had canceled

I would disagree with that Hollister. Last year, according to the city of Hollister, had less than a dozen bikes coming in to, where that's why they've been trying to get the rally back to where this year they're going to have the rally there, the Loughlin rally too I went to the Laughlin rally for 15 years in a row where used to be 30 to 40000 people would show up for the rally. Now over in Bullhead City. Somebody else picked it up. Be lucky if there's 3 or 4000 bikes show up. So yes, rallies can be in jeopardy. based on what the city might do

That's total BS!! I've lived in the area my entire life, and there is NO truth in your statement.
A few years back a group had a hostile takeover of the community/citizens that organized and operated the rally. This is why every year the same citizens were working the official tee shirt booths and checkin area. Since then the group that took it over think they are a business and are making a mess of it. They keep trying to stretch out the days of the rally and confusing the people coming to it. In the day it was the first full week of August and the vast majority always parked downtown and there was much more bike parking. Just saying.

Its still officially the first full week of August, there is no change but, they have added days infrint and they tried after but people last few years are gone by Wednesday and Thursday most are gone. Look, I got news for ya. I'm from the State of New York and I call people out. I don't see any real men or real women in the state of Sturgis all they want to do is build condos to push the motorcycle rally out that's what these condos are, for stupid water parks, leave well enough alone. Your motorcycle rallies make a lot of money but if you want to cut your nose up to sput your face, you keep doing what? You're doing spending taxpayer money so Sturgis motorcycle rally goes away.
