    Hi Heath, That was a very good tip this week. How to choose the right tool for the job. Not always an easy decision. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Say "Hi" to the fishing crew. Have fun and good luck, Mickey

      Hi Mickey, thanks for watching. I always have a hard deciding what to bring, especially with limited space on the boat... so I really try to formulate a plan and have a generalized back-up incase it doesn't work out... that helps keep me focused on the decision making part. When your out there, it's always a calculated risk... I've been fishing for mahi with spinners and hooked blue marlin... doesn't work out so well. All the kids says "Hi Mickey". Been having the crew out with me lately. It's nice. Hope all is well with you and your family. Talk to you on Sunday. Take care :)

    Great informative video Heath! I always have both types of reels on the boat. I've trolled with both and have had good results. You are absolutely right about experience level of the others on your fishing trip and what is easier for them to handle.

      Thanks a bazillion for watching and always being here. Love hearing from and getting to chat with you. Oh boy does experience ever play a vital role... another thing, I've got this long standing debate with a buddy about spinners... he can't fish with the handle on the left side... I grew up fishing with it on the left and was taught that was the natural side it was supposed to be on. But, I'm just not sure anymore, because I've met a ton of folks who swap the handle to the right side... I tried doing it and I struggle... I have to pretend it's a conventional then I get going, but it's very foreign to me. Anyway, just another addition to the decision making process, and yes, bring out a little bit of everything is always best policy. Thanks again for everything and taking out precious time from your life to be here. Tight lines & take care ;)

    Another goody Heath , always looking forward to the next episode , never know what's in the bin when it comes to southern saltwater fishing.
    I am up here in the cold north of Canada on lake Ontario dreaming of being in some warm place throwing out a lure :)
    I've learned a lot from your vid's , thanks and tight lines.

Uhh...Canada, you're making me cold just talking about it. I'm a native Floridian, a tropical being. I've up north for short visits, and that's about it. Don't think I'd do very well if we went back into an ice age. Thanks again for everything, glad your enjoying the show. Tight lines & take care ;)

      Thanks a bazillion for watching and leaving some brutally honest feedback. In all walks of life, sometimes, common sense is nowhere to be found. The thing is with fishing, at first I believe reel selection like this, there's an intimidation factor... then comes the good decision making factor once complacency takes over. Thanks again for taking out time from your life to chat with me... All a pleasure. Tight lines & take care ;)

    To fix the spinner line problem of twisting. Let out the line to the end of the Spool and crank the line in. The line will Spool in correctly.

    For me nothing tops my old school Penn Senators - 9/0 for my surface lures, 12/0 for my diving plugs. Slays it behind the sailboat!

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a boat load for watching and sharing. Those are some beast mode setups. I've used senators for well over 30 years. They are the original conventional reels. And have only been modified from the original engineering to improve performance. I have 6-o's and 4-o's and they've been around since the 1980's... so that speaks for the life of the equipment. Thanks again for your support of the channel. I truly appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)

    I just bought a Penn Slammer 4 10500 for trolling but I realize I’m not running a planner on it after watching this video. I think I might throw a Nomad DTX 220 hot pink mackerel on it for fun once in awhile but it’s mostly going to be for cobia, mahi and beach fishing perhaps.

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a million for watching and sharing. There is a way to use a planer and still troll on it with a spinning rod but you don't want to hook the planer directly up to that gear it's too light and you'll end up doing some irreparable damage. If you hook a planer on a line independently set it and tie it off to a cleat then take a couple of rubber bands loop them around a snap swivel let your spinner line out about a hundred feet or so. loop the rubber bands around your spinning line and then hook the swivel onto the line that the planer is on it will naturally drag down to where the planer is. When the fish strikes the rubber bands will snap and your line will zing out. Hope this helps. It's a great alternative to having a planer on your line hooked up in a traditional inline fashion. It also makes it so you can literally do planer trolling with a spinning outfit. Thanks again for your support of the channel I truly and sincerely appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)

    Hello,
    Thank you for all your videos
    I would like to know which rods I should buy for trolling with spinning saragosa 18000 and 10000 for dolphinfish and bonito. should I buy rods maximum 7'' or more

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally I'd go with 7 foot rods... I like star rod... I'd choose from the paraflex series 15-30 lb class for the 18000 and 12-20 lb class, or lighter for the 10000... you're gonna want to use a medium action rod that will give you plenty of shock absorbency.

      That reel can't handle a diving plug like that... You need something bigger like a size 30 from Penn... Or a 25 or 30 TLD from Shimano... For a few examples

    Hey Heath, I sail lots of miles and like to troll a line behind the boat. We sail between 5 & 8 knots and are not looking at catching big game fish. What could you recommend. Rod , reel , rigs? Cheers 🍻

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd get some small spinners... 12 to 20 pound class... something like Penn spinfisher 5500... spool it with 12 pound mono. Get a 7 foot rod, same class rating... troll a 3/4 ounce white bucktail jig... this should put you on some nice fish

      Left handed conventional can be clumsy unless you are left handed. I grew up fishing witha left handled spinner so I'm used to it, but my conventional are right handed. My advice, if it's goofy, return it before it's too late

    • @JK-pf4um
      @JK-pf4um 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mounted it to a boat rod just to see , the other reason I bought a lefty is because any baitcasters I have are left handed . I got some time before I have to return the reel , thanks for the info.

    I REALLY DONT SEE WHY PEOPLE USE SPINNER FOR HEAvy fish on a boat for shore yes they good for that but for a real fight a conventional gear is the way to go if you want to go light use a bass set up with a bait caster

    Another great instructional video. I love your insights. Would like your recommendation on a trolling reel as I am looking at the Talica 20. Fish in the same region as you do. Would love your insight,

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing

      Thanks a million for watching and asking for my advice. Shimano makes great reels, if you've got your mind set on the Talica, I say go for it. That's a great all-around reel.. can definitely go planer trolling and high-speed for wahoo. Personally, I use Penn Internationals, that's what my family has used for over 40 years. I acquired a few of them for myself after Hurricane Irma. Hope this helps set your mind at ease. Thanks again for your support of the channel, I truly appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)
