ACORDAI
Composer | F. Lopes Graça (1906-1994)
Fernando Lopes Graça was perhaps the most important Portuguese composer in the twentieth century. Acordai is a protest song from the time that Salazar reigned. It is one of the Canções Heróicas, "heroic songs", a collection of Portuguese marches, dances and songs, collected by Lopes Graça.
JIP Chamber Choir is a project choir from Utrecht, the Netherlands, founded in 2013 by brothers Jonathan and Imre Ploeg. JIP wants to present new and unknown choir music from all over the world, brought together in surprising, engaging and fundamental themes like war and peace, the nomadic life, the refugee crisis and the ecological crisis.
For this project we worked together with the fantastic ensemble The Windsor Consort. We have immersed ourselves in the culture, language and music of Portugal. -
Only a correction: "The "Heróicas" are not folk melodies, all the melodies are by Lopes-Graça, and the texts were writen by diferent writers, and all connected with the resistance against Salazar. The purpose of these songs of protest was that the simplicity of the tunes and piano arranjements, when psosible, could make them acessible to amateur choirs and the people in general, including political prisoners, which succeed indeed. The songs were sung in prisons, in private, etc. Very well done your version, as I said before!
I’m from a choir in Portugal that regularly sings this song. This brought me so many chills and nostalgia for the days before all this happened.
In these troubled times, it’s good to know that beautiful and powerful choir music is still bringing us together.
We wish you all the best and good health, and also for all the choir members :), and yes: the power of music is forever strong!
CAUM spotted! xD
I'm portuguese. I come back to this interpretation every now and then. It always brings tears to my eyes. Thank you.
This just brought tears to my eyes. Beautifully done. It's so great to see that people appreciate what your country has to offer. I sang this piece in a choir in Portugal, and I would get goosebumps everytime. Music is the true universal language.
We appreciate very much what Portugal has to offer, culturally, historically and musically! All singers wanted to go to Portugal after we had the project with the music from Portugal :)
nao chores
@@miguelflecha3570 Porque não?
This just made my portuguese.
Ouvi a vossa interpretação algumas vezes.
Excelente a vossa interpretação.
Ao nível das melhores.
So beautiful , you have captured the portuguese ancient soul , perfect performance
Thank you people! Thank you so much! This is my Home Country! This is Portugal! So beautiful! Thank you!
I'm astonished! I'm Portuguese and only after reading the comments did I found out that you guys are Dutch, not Portuguese. (And only after did I noticed a slight accent here and there hehe). Well done guys, this is such a powerful version!
@@VoltaireMM Idem pra ti!
One of the greatest songs ever written change my mind
It's time to wake up. Never been so important.
Sempre electrizante.
Obrigado.
Movimentos do maestro explícitos 👁👄👁
A song full of meaning for us, portuguese people, in this day...25h april.
I saw you on the tv in the beguining of the month and you were incredible. This was sung with such a nice accent. I have people from Netherlands in my heart and maybe this is one of the reasons why this video is so amazing for me.
Thank you and keep spreading love to all over the world ❤
I think I need the one hour repeat of this!
Such a beautiful portuguese composition! I love it since I listened the first time. Congratulations to the choir for the the voices and for the accent!
FYI: You appeared on Portugues national television yesterday (4th April) on SIC channel, around 9PM. Magnificent interpretation by the way. :)
Thank you! Yes we understood we were on the national television. Very special!
This song was made to wake up people towards freedom and democracy. These days the portuguese nationalists are trying to subvert its meaning.
Your performance was absolutely brilliant. Thank you!
A Luta continua...
congratulations!!! Fantastic!!! :D thaks for all!!! God bless you. I'm portuguese and your performance are "magnific"! :D
Thank you so much!
Acordai
acordai
homens que dormis
a embalar a dor
dos silêncios vis
vinde no clamor
das almas viris
arrancar a flor
que dorme na raíz
Acordai
acordai
raios e tufões
que dormis no ar
e nas multidões
vinde incendiar
de astros e canções
as pedras do mar
o mundo e os corações
Acordai
acendei
de almas e de sóis
este mar sem cais
nem luz de faróis
e acordai depois
das lutas finais
os nossos heróis
que dormem nos covais
Acordai!
Obrigada!
Beautiful
ok
As a portuguese living in the Netherlands I feel so happy to listen to you singing this fantastic poem. Great performance and pronunciation! Hartelijke dank
Dankjewel Joana!!
What a beautiful interpretation. This song has such beautiful lyrics, so expressive and so heartfelt. Without a doubt, music is universal and a tool for political combat against dictators. Many congratulations and thanks.

Greetings from Portugal. I just saw your choir on the news and its so outstanding the way you sang in Portuguese, Bravo!
Wow, thank you!
So I didn't even know who Lopes Graça was before today. I don't think I heard this before, and yet it's strangely familiar. Whatever the case, I'm not used to hear choral music in portuguese, and between the meaning of the words and the power of the performance and the fact it's sung by people from the Netherlands....I'm positively flabbergasted. Congrats!
This was beautiful...really good pronounciation....and I think, for a second there, during that first listen, it managed to really "wake" me up, in that deeper way it was probably intended to by Lopes Graça. All the best :)
Lindoooooooooooo!
Lindo!!

I had the pleasure to meet Fernando Lopes Graça when I studied music at the Academia dos Amadores de Música. He was a wonderfully warm and giving person and always had a smile and encouragement to give to anyone he crossed paths with.
That is very special! He can only have been a special person, we really love all the amazing choir works he made and his effort to preserve folk music!
@@KamerkoorJIP here's a great example of this song being used as intended: th-cam.com/video/LUcqVUfu83U/w-d-xo.html

Well done! Greetings from Portugal
Thank you for your amazingly beautiful rendition of this song which is one of my favourite songs in the Portuguese repertoire.. Being myself a Portuguese native, this interpretation of "Acordai" brought tears of joy to my eyes. Thank you so much.

Lyrics in English:
Wake up, Wake up...
All the men who sleep
Cradling the pain
(2x)
in vile silences!
Come, in the clamour
Of the virile souls,
Plucking out the flower
That sleeps at its root!
Wake up, Wake up...
Thunders and typhoons
That sleep in the air
(2x)
And in the crowds!
Come to burst into flames
Of stars and songs
The stones and the sea,
The world and the hearts!
Wake up!
Light up,
Of souls and suns
This sea without a pier,
(2x)
Not even lighthouse lights!
And wake up, after
The final fights,
Our heroes
who sleep in the dens
Wake up!
Escutem as outras canções, em português, deste coro. Vozes espectaculares.
Obrigado e obrigado pela bela música portuguesa!
