    I have a 02 mercury sable and i have been looking for somebody doing this kind of job on camera. My rack and pinion has been leaking so badly that I just couldn't keep filling it up. Thank you for all that you do. :)

    You must be from a rust belt state like me😂. I used to own a 99 Taurus with similar issues putting it on the lift. Thanks for the video. I have an appreciation for what you do. I also have a repair shop and work on a variety of things but mostly farm equipment, so I can relate. I grew up on a farm. I enjoy your old farm equipment videos as well 👍

      Thanks for the kind words! Yup, that rig spends time in Iowa & Illinois; couple nights ago I switched out a questionable brake line and the new inner tie rod already has surface rust on it!! With all the snow and ice, the entire car has a layer of salt on it again!
      I worked at a discount tires, mufflers and brakes shop in the late 80s and every now and then I could only use a floor jack on some of the cars that passed through our doors because I was afraid the car would fold in half on the lift - ha ha ha ha! I didn't make much money, but boy I sure learned a lot at that place. I can still hear my boss say "that ain't no tractor farm boy, hurry up!" Starting this spring, I'm going to do more work at the home place that will include old ag equipment and finally get brakes in that 78 F250 Ford! Thanks for watching!

      ​@@opasvintagegarage I could tell you stories about me as well. As a kid on the farm I grew up around older IH tractors. I was kind of a "tractor nerd" (still am). When I learned how to read I remember going into Dad's filing cabinet and reading through all the operator's manuals to every tractor we had. 😂 I enjoy working on almost anything with wheels and an engine and have worked on everything from lawn mowers to Detroit 2 stroke diesels(altho these are not a favorite, lol). I too have worked at various places thru the years but no automotive (but I almost did).

    i have a 1999 taurus and im not sure if it is rack and pinion . power steering pump was power fluid out of reservoir so thought that was the problem ,replaced power steering pump with remanufactured one but steering fluid still pouring out of reservoir. no fluid seems to be leaking out of rack and pinon boots or anywhere i can see , but can not turn wheels either right or left when its on the ground without really forcing it. and it is making that loud winding sound when it is running ,anyway any suggestions you could give me would be great,, Dont want to buy and replace rack and pinon if it is not the problem..Thank for video great job.

      Hello, I'm sounding like captain obvious, but you've got air in the system. The air is displacing the oil and causing it to overflow the reservoir, so you've got a couple options: 1. You've got to put a vac on like I did in the video to get the air out while you move the wheel back and forth (stop to stop) for at least 10 times. 2. Air is getting in the system if you bleed it and it still does not fix the problem, so you need to find where it's coming in. That could be very difficult because it's dang near impossible to get a good look at the rack to check for a leak, plus it could be dripping slow enough that the exhaust is burning it off, so you don't see a drip on floor. These fords can be buggers to get the air out of them, let me tell you! Hope this helps you, don't forget to check both high and low pressure hoses, the low is the rubber line going into the pump and the high is the metal line going into the pump and directly to the rack. My napa had the high pressure line "on the shelf" so that tells me it's a part to inspect. I'm shocked the high didn't leak on my rig! Let me know what you find.       @@Mr7352 hello, yes your seal on rack hub is leaking and is probably letting air into the system as well. The good news is you found the leak, the bad news is the rack is probably the culprit! Funny thing is - that was the only place the rack I removed was not leaking! Ha ha. Just be prepared that removing the rack is a big job and without a lift, it's a tough job. Not sure what your situation is, but that might justify a visit to your local mechanic. At least you know where you stand. Good luck and God bless!

    Was there a check valve in the old one? I have a 2000 taurus and mine had a checknvalve in the old one, tried to transfer it to the new one, but the pressure port in the new one wasn't deep enough to put the check valve in and I don't see a lot of people talking about the check valve, so I'm curious what would happen if I leave it out. Not recommended for sure, but curiosity floods my mine too often.

      Hello and thanks for your comment! I did the job a while ago, but I do remember when I picked up the refurbished ford rack, it did have a check valve installed with a label over it indicating that it did have a check valve. I'm guessing the label was to prevent it from falling out during shipping; also the old rack I took out had a check valve as well. Off the top of my head, it's probably needed to ensure steady and consistent pressure in the system -smoother steering without the small lags while driving in town, - I'm swaging, but that seems right. Now that I'm typing, I think I may have checked the orfice size with a thin wire to compare and I didn't swap. That job would've been easier if I could've dropped the subframe, but oh well. I do remember the trans cooling lines were also leaking, so I had red fluid everywhere!! I think I still have some stains on my work shirt - ha ha. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it!

      I just looked at the video and the rack had a cap over both inlets and a card that let me know it had a check valve. Too many jobs ago!

      Yeh, I agree. I was dreading dropping the subframe too, especially since I'm working on the ground on jack stands, but I simply used two bottle Jack's, 1 on each side, dropped it about 4 inches and it made it so much easier and dropping the subframe relieved my fear too. I just found out that apparently the owner before me had an engine swap done and they just did an entire cradle swap, including the rack and pinion, and I have everything on my cradle from a 1999 taurus even though it's a 2000. Which explains why I've had the hardest time ordering parts for this thing. Thanks for the reply.

      I do have to add too, that I'm in Texas, just north of Houston, so salt on the roads and rust isn't that big of a deal here. Thankfully, or I would have been more hesitant, too.

    I know this is an old video but im getting ready to this on my Taurus. How long did it take you to do this? Im no stranger to auto mechanic but never done this on a Taurus. Thanks

      Hello and thanks for watching! I spread it over 2 days, as I worked it in for my daughter. Buddy told me it should take about 3 - 3 1/2 hours. Since I could not lower the subframe, it took me a solid 4 hours to do the job, that did include recording and bleeding. Honestly, I can't imagine doing this without a lift, but I'm in my late 50s, ha ha. I don't remember any real issues I had, but it took longer than anticipated, and on a lift. I did buy the replacement high pressure hose and sensor ahead of time, only needed the sensor as the hose was fine. If you ran the pump dry, you'll probably need a new one. It's a tight fit removing from the left side, but can be done. I wish I could remember more detail, but it's been too many jobs ago, ha ha ! It's also a job I'd like to forget 🤣🤣

      I’ve watched lots of TH-cam videos on lots of different repairs. As an intermediate mechanic (a couple years in the trade before I switched fields) this was a great concise breakdown of what’s required to do the repair. Anyone who needs more than this info is probably not mechanically inclined enough to tackle this job. I especially appreciated the intro part about the difficulty of the job including alternate methods. I also liked that you included details of every piece you touched on removal.
